I have heard hymns sung by people who I believe are descended from God's Holy choir,
they absolutely broke my heart in two and the tears over-flowed all by themselves...
I was never ashamed to show my emotions, because I was oblivious to those around me,
totally caught up in the Grace and Love of the singer and the words...

I have also heard music that was referred to as hymns, but were completely being sung
for what the world wants to hear to make them feel something that is totally foreign to me...

just a share!

I'm afraid the OP article is all too close to the truth that many churches--obsessed with attendance numbers, tithing levels, staffing concerns, buildout&expansion concerns--just don't want to discuss. Barna makes it very clear that self-professed Christians' ethical behavior is indistinguishable from non-Christians. A ton of counterdoctrinal garbage has wormed its way into the Church via popular acceptance. The musical shift from hymns to pop music is a symptom, not a cause, of this. The "new" music is fine for KLOVE, and is not bad in itself, but when sanctuary music is no longer worship but performance, then it reveals a problem.

The really ironic thing is that many church congregations that are growing in number are also dying in spirit at the same time.

kaylagrl makes a great point about the music. There are some newer songs which are deep theologically or really do help bring the laity closer into the presence of the Holy Spirit for services. There are also newer songs that rely on emotion to drive people up in feelings. Some are fine to listen to for the sake of listening, but when it comes to church service and focusing on the things of God, there is little benefit spiritually as sometimes it brings the individual more into the flesh. Always allow the Holy Spirit to lead the selection of music for services.

I agree with you on reverence also. I use to attend a church where they sat up tables in the back of the church where people could have coffee and a doughnut. Can you guess what happened? Right,no one listened to the pastor, not that he was preaching anything anyway. Everyone socialized and ignored the service. Then they would have up to an hour of worship songs, possibly more singing the songs over and over. Now I love music but there was little to no preaching. The older folk were hanging onto the chairs to stay standing. I would sit down. The lady that ran the worship music said something to me and I let her know that I was not going to stand that long for her or anyone else and that it was too hard on the elderly. I use to travel and do concerts,I didn't expect the congregation to stand with me for an hour and a half while I sang. In some churches I felt like the worship service was more to showcase the talent,or lack of it, of church members. More time and effort was placed on the worship service than the message and then there goes doctrines.
Here is the best rendition of amazing grace I have ever heard. Sung in the roman coliseum.

Acts 8 shows us that Baptism can take place in a puddle, with the right heart change, stop making it a religious ritual....

Lemme Guess, all those that are falling off the cliff are also not using the KJB either , right?
Do you even read my comments before you try to rudely make me look bad?

If you want to use a satanic counterfeit translation that is your thing. Are your remarks to me edifying? Are you dogging me to prove a point?

Hate to pick a bone with you here, but what did Paul say about singing in the Spirit?

I do agree there are abuses in the modern day worship music...but I also find that some of the old Hymns say things completely contrary to the Gospel or the rest of the Bible...especially when they sing about "Heaven"....

Worship is not MUSIC, a song or a hymn, true worship is a lifestyle of prostrating yourself before God....if we taught what worship really was, the likes of Bethel and Hillsong would likely go away.....This is where words really matter...maybe Hillsong should stop calling it "Worship" and call it Praise....

For example, I do not believe, Abraham took any musicians with him and Isaac, when they went up the mountain to "worship"....Gen 22 was the first time the word Worship was used in the Bible....

I have no idea who hillsong or bethel are.

I never said music is worship did I. Again, do you even read my posts before commenting on them? Please show that respect at least.
