I'm reading through the book of Isaiah.

Since this is a bible discussion forum, I thought it would be edifying to post the chapters and my notes as I go along for discussion.

So, here are my notes from Isaiah Ch. 1. I hope that it leads to edifying instruction and sharpening throughout the word of God.

I'll post it in sections to discuss so that it doesn't become a wall of text.

Chapter 1 of Isaiah begins with God sending Uzziah to speak HIS truth to Israel and the condition of the nation under the reign of three different kings. Jotham, Ahaz and Hezzikiah.

Isaiah 1:2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

When Uzziah speaks, he speaks into the atmosphere and to the earth, He calls both to give ear. He is calling heaven and earth as witness to what God gave him to speak regarding the condition of the people of Israel.

Isaiah 1:3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
Isaiah 1:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

This reminds me of the parable of the seed sower, when a good seed is planted and flourishes and grows and produces some some 30, 60 and 100 fold. It is good and lively and productive.

A seed of evil doers can also be planted as described in Vs. 5 and they can only produce tares. Jesus said that the word is the seed. And His word tells us that it is living. Anything that is planted that is not of God is a tare, nothing produced, no life or power in it. So the seeds of evil doers produce tares, fruitless and empty. Jesus also warned that when a good seed is planted, immediately the enemy comes and sows tares among the wheat. Weeds or (tares) choke out the good seed.

Matthew 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

He also spoke of seeds that fall by the wayside, a person my hear it, but it's not taken seriously and the enemy prevents it from being established in a persons heart by immediately coming and taking away the word that was sown.

Mark 4:15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

Isaiah 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

Isaiah 1:6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

He asks them, “Why will you be stricken any more?” You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, the whole heart is faint.
They were stricken more and more as they moved further and further outside of God’s truth.

Uzziah, speaking God’s word, tells the people that from the soles of their feet even unto the head, there is no soundness in it; but wounds and bruises, and purifying sores. They have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

This is a spiritual condition, the feet are to walk in God’s truth, and the head is the leading of Christ. It always has been. "The Lamb slain before the foundations of the earth." (note, there is also a picture of this in Ezekiel Ch. 16. )

Matthew 13:15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

I'm going to jump further in the 1'st chapter of Isaiah to make a point. Just momentarily as it ties right into the above verse in Matthew. I'll post it in order as I continue if there is any interest in this message.

Isaiah 1:26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
Isaiah 1:27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
Isaiah 1:28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

Isaiah 1:7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

The result of God’s truth and counsel being rejected is this:
Their country was desolate, their cities burned with fire, their land, strangers devoured it in their presence, it was desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
Could the strangers represent strange teachings that are not part of God's instruction? The teachings that take people further and further away from the truth? “The strangers devoured the land in their presence, it was desolate, as overthrown by the strangers.” There were no boundaries set in place any more. The truth had been removed the boundaries once set in place by the truth and abiding in it were gone.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
Mark 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

Isaiah 1:8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
Isaiah 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

Isaiah 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

This reminds me of Abraham when God was set to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
Abraham asked the Lord, “Will you destroy it is there are 50 righteous people?” And he brings the number down to the question of, will God destroy a place if there are ten righteous people.
God tells Abraham that if there are righteous people there, right down to only ten, that HE will not destroy it for the sake of the righteous.

Isaiah 1:11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
Isaiah 1:12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
Isaiah 1:13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
Isaiah 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

Their offerings were wicked, they were not walking in the purity and instruction of truth of the Lord. They were offering rams, and fat , and blood of bullocks, lambs, and he goats. The offerings were about being purged and cleansed, glorifying and honoring God from a sincere heart, they were a foreshadow of what Christ would do for all who will seek HIM in spirit and in truth. There was no delight in these offerings while they were being made with motions and not in truth and sincerity. There were obviously no changes happening in their ways but instead they waxed worse and worse.

This reminds me of the flattery described in the bible, with their mouths they honored HIM, but their hearts were far from HIM.

Psalms 78:35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

Psalms 78:36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
Psalms 78:37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

Isaiah 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

How could the new moons and appointed feasts be pleasing to God when they were insincere, just actions, motions without the understanding or even seeking out what these things stood for?

It's the whole chapter in context. Is shows what the people were doing, yet they were attempting to keep the feasts, and make the offerings.

In Context.

To understand Isaiah, we need to know the people and times Isaiah was addressing. Isaiah gives eternal truths, I don't mean to read it as only talking to a certain people or time. I mean that we can better understand these truths when we know the people God was using as illustrations.

The Hebrews lived among people who believed in their idols, they all believed that their gods were just for them. If they wanted a good crop, they must satisfy an idol who was fed with blood, even with the blood of their babies. Many of the Hebrews believed God was fed with blood in the same way, they performed the sacrifices without the least idea of what it was about, or what atonement meant. Their goal was simply good crops.

In the same way, the people around them had superstitious ceremonies they performed for their Gods. It was very like us as we listen to the world's way to be happy and use that way.

In later chapters of Isiah, it goes even more into these things. Why the people were doing what they were doing, who was teaching them and on and on.

I love the book of Isaiah, it's like a book unfolding to reveal so many truths.

It actually reminds me of the times that we live in now, making it easier to process.

God never told anyone to do anything for no reason. And if something wasn't acceptable before God at any time, it's not acceptable now.

Thank you all for your responses.

Thank you Redtent, I love your input, you always edify and clarify.

I like these things that you bring to our attention. It is as obvious today as then that we use the Word of God to justify OUR own thing. Very good analogy sis. The Jewish traditions, that Jesus was exposing during His time on earth, of turning thing upside down is the same today in many churches. I suppose I will start a dispute over that statement, but it is true. I see many threads started about things that shouldn't even be questioned.

"your sacrifices" and "Your new moons and your appointed feasts" It's human nature to mess it up when we don't want the truth because we want justification our way instead.

Isaiah 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
Isaiah 1:15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

This is interesting here, and I wonder, when the bible speaks of blood being on the hands of people, if it also represents the tares/lies/false doctrines, the seeds planted by evil doers, a tare in a persons heart would reflect wickedness outwardly. "Out of the mouth proceed the issues of the heart, (That is a good self-examining point.) because life in this world is temporary, but true life in Christ is forever, so lies being planted and tares choking out the truth would draw spiritual blood and lead to death, since the life is in the blood, the truth of Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Isaiah 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Isaiah 1:20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
The passage above again reflects the double-edged sword, and again reminds me of the meaning of "Gimel." as in the original post.

Isaiah 1:21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
Isaiah 1:22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

Dross of silver are the impurities that come up and are removed in the refinement of silver producing pure silver. Instead of the dross being removed the silver was taken out and all that was left was dross.

The wine mixed with water. I believe this is a picture of a watered down version of God's truth.

Isaiah 1:23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
Isaiah 1:24 Therefore saith the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
Isaiah 1:25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:
Isaiah 1:26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
Isaiah 1:27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
Isaiah 1:28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
Isaiah 1:29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
Isaiah 1:30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
Isaiah 1:31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

Luke 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
Luke 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Luke 12:49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

Isaiah 1. Vs. 25-26, states that judges will be restored. Those who judge what is right in the sight of God according to HIS word, and proclaim it.

Vs. 27 says that Zion will be restored with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

This shows how very patient and merciful God is. Confirmed in many others parts of the bible.

Psalms 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Psalms 85:10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Through judgment we are convicted, God is JUST!
When we acknowledge our sin in the sight of God and repent, He is just and faithful to forgive us our sin, and only then have righteousness and peace kissed. HIS righteousness. 'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness..."

1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

1 Corinthians 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
1 Corinthians 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
1 Corinthians 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1 Corinthians 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Thank you for your response Brother Just-me,

You are so right!

We need every word of God while seeking the truth through Christ.

I'm loving your studys on the feasts and what each thing represented. Spending each morning reading through them. God's word is just so deep and wonderful. I can't get enough of it!

God bless

ALL of God's Word is wonderful and necessary, and strange teachings/strangers that teach that part of it is no longer applicable, valuable or worthy of consideration, leave us with a watered down, weak message to God's people. This is an excellent example of what we have now that is getting worse by the day. Today's churches are leaving the flock to starve to death and die of malnutrition.

I took a little time going through the bible to search out acceptable offerings and unacceptable offerings.

This is a good example how scripture interprets scripture. And why we need the full council of God. Thought I'd share the verses for consideration.

About the offerings

Cain and Abel brought offerings unto the Lord.
God accepted Abel’s offering, but rejected Cain’s.

Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

Genesis 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Genesis 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

Even after Cain’s offing was not accepted God gave him the opportunity to overcome his anger and to purge out what was already on his heart. But instead Cain killed his brother
Perhaps the offering was not accepted in the first place because of the condition of his heart. God knows our hearts and our thoughts.
Jesus goes on to call Abel, righteous.

Matthew 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

Psalms 37:32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

Abraham was called righteous, and he still brought offerings to God. Even in test, Abraham still held faith in God.

Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Genesis 22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

In the wilderness temple, God established the offerings, and the temple. God did not despise these things and the instruction to the people was clear and to the point.
When offerings went against His instruction, things didn’t go well. Read about the sons of Aaron when they offered strange fire, outside of God’s command. (Note: Just-me has an awesome study on the subject of Aaron's sons. Nadab and Abihu, I highly recommend requesting a link and reading it.)

Exodus 23:18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.

All of these instructions carry through the first five chapters of the bible, and onward, as even seen in Solomon’s temple, the temple in Ezekiel and Ezra’s temple.
And all in offerings could only be offered in a way that is acceptable by God.
I believe that the prophets understood what all of these things represented.
David speaks about it in Psalm.

Acceptable offerings:

Psalms 4:5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

Psalms 66:15 I will offer unto thee burnt sacrifices of fatlings, with the incense of rams; I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah.

Psalms 66:16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.

Psalms 96:8 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.

Psalms 119:108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.

Unacceptable offerings.

Psalms 16:4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

(offerings with no understanding)

Isaiah 1:11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

Isaiah 43:23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.

Isaiah 43:24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Psalms 50:7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
Psalms 50:8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
Psalms 50:9 I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
Psalms 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
Psalms 50:11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

God had a plan in all of this! Lessons for us.

Psalms 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

Psalms 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

Psalms 40:10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Psalms 50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

Psalms 50:16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

The feasts, and the sacrifices were all foreshadows of what was to come, and we should know them and pray for wisdom in these things.

Psalms 51:16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

It’s not about a doing away with, but seeking understanding in what these things mean. There are types and shadows all through the word of God.

Psalms 50:23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
Philippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Hebrews 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Hebrews 5:2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
Hebrews 5:3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
Hebrews 5:4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
Hebrews 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Hebrews 5:10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
How can we understand any of this is we don’t examine all of the scriptures?
We only get half truths and watered down truth if we neglect any of it.
Acts 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
As you can see, Paul touched on all of this.
2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Least, thank you so much for this thread and your study and thoughts on it. I look forward to reading more. Praying that this generation will set aside their own desires and seek instead what God Yahovah desires. The making of a bride should be foremost in our hearts and minds, seeking our Father's will. By the blood of Yahshua/Jesus may we find grace empowers us.

I have heard that Isaiah is a bible within the bible as in...

66 chapters--->66 books
Natural division as found between chapter 39 and 40 which equals
39 chapters and 27 chapters-->39 O.t. 27 N.T.
and a few other things of such caliber<------not necessarily saying I buy it all, but there does seem to be a line of thought that seems to follow the order of the bible to some extent.

What wonderful insight you are showing. When I read that we should do away and not listen to the shadows to help explain what Christ is to us, it makes me shudder. Not listen to scripture? You are a breath of the air of our Lord, a giver of truth.

Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

This verse always spoke volumes to me.

Come now It is a solemn act on the part of God, an offer to Israel and to all nations.
