Arguing and debating resemble corn and peas. Arguing is like a man who is dull in all his senses which cannot tell whether its corn or peas and assumes the wrong things, or in the wrong way. Debating is like a man with great senses, sensitive to touch, feelings, seeing, hearing, and tasting, and smellings. He knows that there is a distinctive taste while the other has no idea. Corrupt is he who is dull if he assumes to much without knowing.

You, my young friend, are mature beyond your years. But no doubt someone will appear who will argue with us both. <grin>

I'm here. Now pondering whether to argue or debate the point. Hmmm.

Debating appears in one of Paul's list of examples that are works of the flesh. In another passage it says Paul debated with Jews about Christ. There seems to be a point at which one moves from the appropriate persuasion of truth inspired by the Spirit into a selfish work of the flesh which of course is a work that will not endure the judgement seat of Christ. We must take care that we are not investing time and energy in fruitless debates that are the equivalent of casting pearls before swine. We get tricked into believing we are planting seeds but we are only planting flesh.
