God smote Paul mightily, and Paul repented. Paul was an incredible witness to the power of God through the death and resurrection of Christ, and how it all fit in to the larger picture of all that had preceded the life of Christ in the law and the prophets, which were but mere shadows pointing forward to what we find in Him :)

The point is, Pharaoh hardened his own heart many times before God further hardened it.
The point is also that people often overlook this very salient fact, and want to blame the hardness of Pharaoh's heart all on God.
My caution was...only God can soften OUR hardened hearts irrespective of how they were hardened (Using Paul's conversion as an example).

Good topic, and one I have often wondered about. The answer I found was, that in reference to "YHVH hardened his heart.." is better understood as YHVH "strengthened" his heart. In other words, Pharaoh's hearts desire was to do exactly as he did...yet he lacked the resolve to follow thru. Much as when one has labored over a task with desire to finish, but has run out of steam and must rest before continuing. (my conclusions based on possible translations of "harden" from the Hebrew -and other places those words were used)

First mention of Pharoah's heart...

Exo 4:21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

fulfilled...

Exo 7:13 And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

14. And the Lord said unto Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go. Exodus 7:14
