Jesus said all the law and prophets hung on two commandments, that you should love the Lord with all of your heart, mind, and soul, and that you should love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40). Will you go to heaven if you obey these two commandments, or do you also have to be a Christian?
How does one do that without having a relationship of faith toward God? When Jesus said "Lord" he wasn't refering to the Allah of Islam or the Krishna of Hinduism.

Regarding the issue of bieng a Christian, I would first like to point out that it was the heathen that gave the believers that name, a compliment that we ought to be mindful to live up to.
Before there was a Bible and before the cross, God revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and even Moses. Before there was a cross came David and Ezra and Nehemiah. Befroe God was revealed in Christ there was Isaiah and Jeremiah and Elijah and Elisha. God is capable of revealing Himself to individuals who have never heard the gospel? Absolutely. Are they able to enter into a relationaship of faith? Abraham did. Does that mean we should leave the world in thier ignorance? Absolutely not. Jesus commanded us to go and proclaim the good news. I do not believe that a Christian is spiritually healthy if they do not find a way to share the gospel of Jesus. When an entire congregation or association of churches fails to do so, then the body of Christ is unhealthy.

We know God is love and as Jesus said that love IS everything. If you love then all your actions and sayings will be a result of love (even if you are not a Christian). I know people who are good by heart but they are not Christians.
But what I'm sure about is that God never leaves His children. In a way or another, He shows them the way to Him. More probably, we don't know how because He said: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

My understanding as far as those who were had not heard the words of Christ or about salvation was that Christ would not return to rapture the church until that happened.

Additionally, my understanding was that Christianity has reached all corners of the globe. I could be wrong, but that might help with the whole "people havent heard of Christ problem."

Matthew 24:14 "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come."

So what about the people after Christ that have not heard the Gospel and have since died?

When Jesus died, He rose three days later, during those three days after He died and before He rose, He descended into Sheol and set the captives free.

No. Whoever wants to go to heaven doesn't have to be Christian. You have to ask yourself this question: What if a man was in some remote area and have never heard of Jesus and died? But that man was good, helpful, meek... etc. What's his fault that he never heard of Him? Then I would say God is not fair.
But because God is fair, and good, He maintained another way: For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) "Romans 2: 14 - 15"

Go find that one man in the remote area and tell him about Jesus!

it is a fairquestion

God judges us according to the amount of light that we have

Jesus really did die for the sins of the whole world
