I hear folks in this forum write about how they know they are correct in their study of the word because they make sure the Holy Spirit leads them in their study. My question is, how do you make sure that you are being lead by the Spirit, just saying that you are being lead by the Spirit does not make it so. We will be judged by how we used the word of God, therefore it is up to us whether or not we are in truth or error. There is no voice that will say, you are wrong, God expects us to be honest enough to discover that for ourselves.
No individual can say that they are so led by the Spirit that He leads them into all truth. He leads His people as whole into all truth. Each individual He leads a bit at a time. I know I have the Spirit in my life. I know He guides me. But that is also true of my 'opponents.'

I was led by the Spirit when I believed Millennialism. I am equally led by the Spirit in believing Amillennialism. His concern is that I should know God not that I believe certain eschatological teachings, which as far as He is concerned are peripheral. His desire is that spiritual truth is brought home to me.

When I read the word He leads me to the Father and to Jesus Christ my Lord and makes them known to me as He will. He does not concern Himself with my individual interpretation or my ideas except in so far as they are for my spiritual benefit.

Anyone who says other is a charlatan,

You can't go wrong embracing the simplicity of God's love and saving grace in Jesus. Love God and neighbor as He commands and everything will fall into place.
You say that like it is easy, and like you do it.

We aren't all on the same walk or at the same level in that walk - in other words the path would be pretty crowded if we were all at the same place.

That's what's so great about the Holy Spirit - He lives in our hearts and walks with us showing us the way to go teaching us the truth so we are on different rungs of the ladder some a litter further along than others...

Guess that's where the milk and meat teachings come in...

The goal is the same repent, believe and have faith to receive the grace God is giving us and mercy along with the Holy Spirit teaching and leading us on the path. Which leads to living and being reconciled to God in the end thanks to the gift Jesus has given us.

Many misguided Christians claim to be Spirit led. I know I have the Holly Spirit, but I'm not mistake-proof. I read the Bible carefully and with a humble heart; my intention is to learn the truth - not to win debates. If we do this God will open our spiritual eyes.

People who are honestly trying to follow the Lord will find the way, though we all mess up sometimes, I think. Like Paul said, "Pray constantly." 1 Thess 5:17 RSV

Yeah, I also wonder how people can just simply assume or infer things from scripture and make some kind of law or something out of it even if it doesn't clearly state such a thing.

This was to BeyondET's post...forgot to hit reply...LOL

When I wrote this original post it was because of the folks who say they know how to be correct with scripture because they always let the Spirit lead...and then they post a false doctrine. I have never had the Spirit say to me, that is wrong and this is right, however I have had this happen many times. I will read something or hear some bible teaching and on the inside of me it will feel like something is very wrong, but I do not usually know what it is until I get into the bible and honestly study. I believe the Spirit will give us an impression of right or wrong, however if we are in the habit of not paying any attention to the Spirit in such matters we will probably not pick it up. One can pray, O lead me into all truth and then continue on with a closed mind and you will stay in your error.

Are you the same one that said in another thread that we don't have a perfect "plumb line"? How is the word of God our plumb line if what we have has errors? Just saying...I need a "plumb line" that I can trust 100%.

Hi John,

I think you must be mixing me up with
someone else. I could be mistaken, but I believe this is the first time I've used the phrase 'plumb line'.

That's why I believe we need to be patient with others and not automatically fight over doctrine or put others in a category of heretic.

I think one category spoken of the most here is about works vs grace. I really think that it's the way we word things that there's a misunderstanding and then the fisticuffs appear.

Other times it could really be that the other person is too far in the grace category or too far in the works category.

It could also be a point of view that one has. One focuses on walking in truth and obedience. Another focuses on walking in God's grace. They can both mean the same thing, but sometimes each side doesn't see the others point of view. One focuses on God's mercy and grace to forgive when they mess up. The other focuses on the power given to walk the holy life.

Considering Utah's post, I
believe we must love people through error that is obvious error. As we earnestly contend for the faith we all need to be motivated by God's love for us and for others and walk in that love that He freely gives us.

Because on our faith journey we're listening to many voices along the way. And one belief may sound right and stick before we've even read scripture or researched whether it's true of not. We're all growing and learning and sometimes we carry wrong thinking into our conversations.

There are things I'm learning today that doesn't agree with what I learned as a young whippersnapper. And there are truths that I'm still growing in and learning about. And as I continue my walk with the Lord, I'll be transformed and renewed in my mind along the way. It's an ongoing process. I'll never know it all and will continue to have truth revealed to my inner man so I can throw away the falsehoods I've held dear for far too long. We're all growing in God's grace.

I've learned from many here or things have been confirmed in my heart. Other times I've been challenged to love and show kindness when I disagree with others because I remember that I wanted the love and grace to grow in the Lord out of care and concern for my soul.

For those that I thought were way off the mark, I've thought in my heart, "what a fruitcake." That's wrong thinking and I'm always being challenged to love and care for those who are growing and learning.

And yeah, some will just not get it. Maybe their a new believer or maybe not a believer at all. So when that happens, we need to see that we're sowing truth. One thing I need to always remember is that it's about pointing them towards Jesus and not me. As we sow, another will water and God will make it grow.

I have to remember, where did the truth come from that I have? It came from God. :) So I want to continue to point the person to Jesus and not think they have to agree with me. It's Him and His truth I want them to line up with to bless their life so that they grow and are nourished in the truth.

John 5.39 The scriptures, they testify, speak of, point to Jesus. He is the Messiah, the Christ.
The man of Ethiopia didn't understand all that Isaiah the prophet had written (found in chapter 53 of our bibles). Philip asked him, do you understand what you are reading? How can I, unless some man should guide me. Philip then taught him about Jesus. Acts 8.30-35.
The Bereans read and searched the scriptures daily to see if all that the apostle Paul was teaching them was lining up with the truth. Acts 17.10-17.

What I believe and teach and what others might teach, it all must line up with the scriptures. It's the standard. The authority.

The Bible tells us very plainly how we know we are led by the Spirit

Romans 8.16

[SUP]16 [/SUP]The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

John 10.5 & 27
[SUP]5 [/SUP]A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers. [SUP]27 [/SUP]My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

1 Cor 12.3

[SUP]3 [/SUP]Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 2.27
[SUP]27 [/SUP]As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

John 14.16-17, 25-26
[SUP]16 [/SUP]I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; [SUP]17 [/SUP]that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. [SUP]25 [/SUP]“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. [SUP]26 [/SUP]But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

John 15.26-27

[SUP]26 [/SUP]“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, [SUP]27 [/SUP]and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

John 16.8-15
[SUP]8 [/SUP]And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; [SUP]9 [/SUP]concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; [SUP]10 [/SUP]and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; [SUP]11 [/SUP]and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. [SUP]13 [/SUP]But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. [SUP]14 [/SUP]He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. [SUP]15 [/SUP]All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

1 Cor 2:

2 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. [SUP]2 [/SUP]For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. [SUP]3 [/SUP]I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, [SUP]4 [/SUP]and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, [SUP]5 [/SUP]so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; [SUP]7 [/SUP]but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; [SUP]8 [/SUP]the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; [SUP]9 [/SUP]but just as it is written,
“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

[SUP]10 [/SUP]For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. [SUP]11 [/SUP]For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. [SUP]12 [/SUP]Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, [SUP]13 [/SUP]which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
[SUP]14 [/SUP]But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. [SUP]15 [/SUP]But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. [SUP]16 [/SUP]For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

This truth is predicated on the individual understanding the COMPLETE ministry of the Holy Spirit for today and his role in the life of the Believer. If you have been taught that the Holy Spirit only convicts sinners and seals you unto the day of redemption and nothing else, you will have no foundation to understand any of the scriptures above or understand how the Spirit leads us into study of the word and in our daily walk.

The Spirit speaks to us today despite religion saying he does not. The Holy Spirit is a he, not an it and is our helper, teacher, guide and partner in walking out our life with Jesus here on earth.

Jesus himself never did miracles because he was the son of God, he did them because he was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power and that promise is made available to us today.

Proverbs 2
1My child,a listen to what I say,

and treasure my commands.

2Tune your ears to wisdom,

and concentrate on understanding.

3Cry out for insight,

and ask for understanding.

4Search for them as you would for silver;

seek them like hidden treasures.

5Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,

and you will gain knowledge of God.

6For the Lord grants wisdom!

From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

7He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.

He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.

8He guards the paths of the just

and protects those who are faithful to him.

9Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,

and you will find the right way to go.

10For wisdom will enter your heart,

and knowledge will fill you with joy.

11Wise choices will watch over you.

Understanding will keep you safe.

12Wisdom will save you from evil people,

from those whose words are twisted.

13These men turn from the right way

to walk down dark paths.

14They take pleasure in doing wrong,

and they enjoy the twisted ways of evil.

15Their actions are crooked,

and their ways are wrong.

16Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman,

from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman.

17She has abandoned her husband

and ignores the covenant she made before God.

18Entering her house leads to death;

it is the road to the grave.b

19The man who visits her is doomed.

He will never reach the paths of life.

20Follow the steps of good men instead,

and stay on the paths of the righteous.

21For only the godly will live in the land,

and those with integrity will remain in it.

22But the wicked will be removed from the land,

and the treacherous will be uprooted.

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Inspired Truth or Inspired Error?[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Paul’swords make it clear that there are true “inspired expressions”and false ones. He refers to both kinds at 1 Timothy 4:1 whensaying that “the inspired utterance from God’s holy spirit says“definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away fromthe faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances andteachings of demons.” This identifies the source of the false“inspired utterances” as the demons. This is supported by thevision given the apostle John in which he saw “three uncleaninspired expressions,” frog-like in appearance, proceeding from themouths of the dragon, the wild beast, and the false prophet, andwhich expressions he specifically states are “inspired by demons,”serving to gather earth’s kings to the war at Har–Magedon.—Re16:13-16. We must test these expressions to make sure that theyoriginate with God. The Devil is the “Father of the Lie” andmisleads by use of rhetoric that is not supported by God's word.[/FONT]

Of course the Holy Spirit WILL lead Christians, the question is how do you know that you personally are being led by the Spirit? You can easily find three different teachings all coming from Christians who believe they are being led by the Spirit. In such a situation either one Christian is actually being led by the Spirit and the other two are not, or else all three are not being led by the Spirit. My question is still, how do YOU know that you are being led by the Spirit...quoting scripture that tells us that the Spirit will lead a Christians does not prove that a particular individual Christian is actually being led by the Spirit.
