losing family members is something that we all have or will deal with. Just wondering if its wrong to ask God to see them in dreams. Im not asking for an opinion, but rather biblical evidence supporting or contrary.

The only place u see in the bible (if im not wrong) someone talking after their death is in 1 Samuel
Saul goes to a wizard, to speak to Samuel's spirit. But how sure are we that it was samuel himself. because the bible says

Ec 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

They dont have any memory. How will they recognize us? Maybe the samuel in the chapter was a demon in disguise, because he had gone to a wizard. We all know that God hates witchcraft, wizards and magic.

I have never read anywhere in the Bible God encouraging us to see the dead for either advice or the punishment. Saul's consulting of the witch at Indore was his own making and it did not please the Lord (1 Samuel 28:5-25). You have to take time and read it. you must understand that the Bible, in Deuteronomy 18:9-12, condemns human sacrifice, divination, horoscope, chanters, witchcraft, charmers, consultation of familiar spirits, necromancy (calling up on the dead),and all other abominations.

Eccl 9:5-6;
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.KJV
When the life on this earth is ended, the soul and the spirit of whether the wicked or the righteous dead have no more involvement in the earthly things. All their plans and rewards are forgotten.
I hope i have spoken my understanding. The fact that someone is visited by his dead relatives or parents does not mean that we all should do likewise.

Isa 8:19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

It is an abomination to try to seek the dead...

Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Deu 18:12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

2 Cor.5:4-8, “absent from the body present with the Lord.”
This verse says believers who have died do not linger or communicate with the living because they are not here.

Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Both died and one went to a place called “Abraham’s bosom” and the other went to a place called “Hades.”
Again we do not see an option where human spirits stay in this realm. So how can we communicate with them?

Leviticus 19:31
'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.'

Leviticus 20:27
"Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense."

  • Deuteronomy 18:10-13
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
These old Testament verses specifically forbid communicating with the dead.

I don't think it wrong to want to see your loved ones, but to ask God to see them in a dream seems to me something that should be asked. For one, dreams are unreliable. How would you know it was God allowing your loved one to appear in a dream or your own mind conjuring up your preconceived desire to see your loved one? I have dreams of my Dad all the time, I put no stock in it.

You have to be cautious, Demons love to impersonate deceased people all the time.Especially in cases where people call upon the dead.I would be careful with that speculation concerning passed on love ones we can be easily deceived and often we are into believing what isnt true.

Thanx for making a mockery of my deepest pain in a Christian site. I have no desire to seek magicians or speak with the dead. I lost both parents and then asked God to see them more often in dreams because Im forgetting the sound of my moms voice. I rebuke all demons in the name of my God. Knowing that I'm covered by the blood of Christ. I just wanted to hear others opinion on this. not be made a fool of. God bless you all...

If you stay around for a while you will realize a lot of us gain an unneeded sarcastic humor (myself included).

However, we must ask ourselves who is more important, the deceased or God... Who gives me strength the deceased or God... Who washes away my sins the deceased or God? Who holds me up when the whole world fails me, the deceased or God...

I know we like the hang onto the dead, we like to think if only they were here, I would be so much happier and better and greater... We do this with the most honest intentions but we are chasing an empty well... If the dead were enough for us we would never have to seek God... If the dead were enough for us The only son of God would never have to die for our sins...

I know it sucks loosing someone who you hold closely, but God is greater... God is all powerful, and all mighty, and righteous... Where as the dead were sinners like you and me...

I know its easier to grab attachment to something you have seen (worldly) and touched and talked to... But you must seek God and not let this dip in the road go so far down you loose sight of how powerful God is...

I know you lost your mother and I am trying to be humble in my speech and not disgrace her memory. But you have a Father in heaven, the Lord of lords, the King of kings, the God of gods... And he loves you more than anyone from this world ever could...

Bro., you may be asking the wrong question. Seeking out the dead is never a good idea; but the living in Christ Jesus are not dead! Let me share with you a true story about my grandparents, my dad's parents. They were so inter woven into my life that when they passed away life was just not worth living. I was not there when they did pass, about a year apart, just things in life kept me from it and being a long way a way, also.

I awoke one morning and there was a vision right before my eyes, in it my grandpa was standing on what looked like a golden train. He spoke to me and said 'thank you son', and I just laid there and looked at the vision. I then got out of bed and walked into the living room, and the vision stayed right before my eyes; I sat down in a chair and my gpa spoke to me again and he said 'thank you son', and I just stared at the vision and didn't say a thing. Then a third time he spoke to me 'thank you son' I realized he was waiting for an answer and I said, 'your welcomed gpa! The golden train began to spiral up into heaven and I realized that my gpa had passed away. About a year had passed and I knew gma was not doing good, one night i awoke to a vision and I seen her step onto the last car of that golden train, and I knew she had passed away. Then about 2 years later I found myself at a crossroads that I was sure there could be no good thing ever again in my life, I had been in prayer and fasting for weeks and the thoughts of my grandparents or anyone else for that matter were a million miles away! I was setting in the same chair as with the golden train, i was looking ahead out the door elbows on my knees just pondering my situation. I leaned back in my chair and looked to my right and there stood my grandparents in the glory of the Lord! My gma said to me 'son you were right, keep doing what your doing!' My mouth was wide open I'm sure and I couldn't move and I blinked and turned my head just for a fraction of a second and they were gone! I threw a fit! COME BACK! THAT AIN"T FAIR! I WAS RIGHT ABOUT WHAT? KEEP DOING WHAT? My whole point to you is with your parents. I never asked for this and i took it to mean nothing more then what it meant. But God did it, so pray and press on and leave those things in His hands!

I was only bothered with the "I see dead people" post, I thought it lacked class and was in bad taste, however, I appreciate any an all biblical findings, my faith lies in the Word of God, and I wasn't sure if it was ok to ask God to hear my moms voice again. So I was looking (and found) some help in His Word. Thank you all for your input! God Bless you all!

I'm not sure if I would pray for a direct communication with your mother or father now that they have past away. however I don't see the harm in praying and asking God to help you remember all the love and good advice they might have given you while they were with you.

Perhaps you could write a journal with your memories or make a scrapbook?

That way if you ever feel like you are forgetting them. you can look back and remember.

I think I might make one of my grandfather-in-law who passed away last year for my Nana. Her house was flooded by a hurricane and she lost everything including the house.

We thank God every day that she is still with us.

We know that in Samuel, the wizard or witch or whatever you want to call them, summoned Samuel's spirit. This is unpleasing to God. We should not go to mediums, or people who call the spirits, as God is against all witchcraft, soothsayers, fortune tellers, etc. So I don't think that we should ask God to see them in a dream. However, I must say that I have had a couple of my beloved family and friends come to me in dreams, but I did not ask God to send them to me in a dream.... they just came themselves. I dreamed about them without having to ask God. For whatever reason, and I have heard a few interpretations of why they come to you in dreams, it was nice to have them in my dream. I have heard some say that they are "visiting" you when they come in a dream, some say they are guiding you, some say other reasons. Perhaps this is true, as I have had 2 encounters with visions of loved ones passing on, and I am sure without a doubt they have visited me in their spirit, as well as in dreams. But back to your question.....I don't think we should ask God for this. If they decide to visit, or if you just dream about them, it has to come naturally without any intervention.

only at the Resurrection,,,any one else who try's to dig one up without a court order is a grave robber and the police will be looking for them.,,,now there are those who say they can see, speak to,raise ect. you know the psychics, ect. they need to explain to us why they "need us to call the 1-900 numbers and give our credit cards instead of cashing in on the next mega million drawing",,,,that is they being so connected with the spirit world should at least be able to provide those simple little 6 numbers instead of praying on us.,,,,here i'll prove it,i'll do a 180degree,,,,"give me the numbers on your debit card and your pin,,,and i'll tell you your future",,,,,,,,,,,,,lol,,,,,
