John 8:44 (KJV)

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

I'm asking because it's seemingly becoming more evident to me that I'm asking for trouble by interacting with a lot of people.

No it doesn't, you will have trouble interacting with the Holy Spirit if you have this mind.

Jesu's remarks were aimed at a very specific group of people within the vast multitude which swarmed Him. Those were the religious crowd.

We got to stop thinking that everybody who is not saved is an enemy, even when they disagree with us, even when they violently disagree with us. Remember Paul heard St Stephen, saw the miracles which God did by his hand yet Saul of Tarsus gnashed on Stephen with his teeth.

See people as captives who we have come in the name of the Lord to rescue.

Love people.

A wise man once said he did not come to save the good folks, but the bad folks, or something like that :). He spent his time walking all around teaching bad folks how they should live, and how they should act/think. He loved them, and wanted them to repent and become good folks. I also understand his Father wanted all folks to become good folks.

(but, now, I may not have got it right)

Everyone is in the same boat before they repent and are born again it’s about escaping from a snare Satan set for mankind

“in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:25-26‬ ‭

Anyone saved is being saved from that dungeon some prefer the workings of the inside they enjoy the darkness and don’t want to get out , others want to get outside and be free in tbe light so the message of a pardon is just what they need to hear and believe

still others have been bound so long they don’t believe the news of a pardon so they don’t bother looking up to see the doors torn away from the hinges and walk outside

we’re all lost it’s why we need to be saved , redeemed , reconciled to God

Ok, but it says in John that the Jews were crying out that Jesus be taken away and crucified not just the religious teachers, and Ephesians 2 says that we all walked according to the prince and power of the air at some point. And we're all born into the same boat because of what Adam did (which had its origin in Satan). Also unless I'm missing something Jesus was talking to those who believed on him when he said this. I think we might start off as children of the devil.

There's also this to consider:

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (KJV)

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

By the way that verse is obviously describing the devil too.

It helped support the belief I'm sort of holding.

Gotta serve somebody (Bob Dylan). We have God and Satan there is no middle ground. So the lost are the wicked, unrighteous. Yet God so loved the world. We love our enemy. So if they are not for God, saved born from above they are "of your father the devil"

amen to this but this part

I think we might start off as children of the devil.”

“which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:38‬ ‭KJV‬

then they ate the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil

Then they have cain and abel

“Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:12‬ ‭

In this the children of God are manifest,

and the children of the devil:

whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,

neither he that loveth not his brother.
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:10

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning.

For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”( sin)
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:7-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?

and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. ( sin ruled over cain )
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭4:6KJV‬‬

If we repent and do good and not evil has always been the key to be a child of God.

In this the children of God are manifest,

and the children of the devil:

whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,

neither he that loveth not his brother.
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:10

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:14-15‬ ‭
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭

“To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:43‬ ‭KJV‬‬

To understand this you must understand it in its context; and to do that, you cannot just extract verse 44 and try to apply it to yourself today, but must go back to the beginning of John 8 to see who Jesus' audience was. He was speaking to the scribes and Pharisees of that day, and to other Jews in his presence as you read on, some of which believed on him, but his comments were to the religious leaders of that day. Read all of chapter 8 and slowly, following the words "them" and "they", to whom he is speaking and having dialog with.
