When you pray to God just the same way those idol worshippers do, I don't think God sees it funny. Worshippers of idol communicate with a god who have eyes but can't see, who has mouth but can't speak and you call yourself a good Christian but tou are doing the same thing.

Even when you are doing this out of ignorance, God will still not be pleased because we lack knowledge and refused to learn. He is compassionate but He will never be happy seeing you behave like a baby even at the age of 12.

If for many years you have been praying to a God that can speak but you never for once hear Him to communicate with Him, what faith will you show that you believe in tje God you serve.

You know prayer is not a one way street, if one talks to God all the time most likely they hear from him a lot as well, I mean prayer is not us speaking to him it's speaking with him so if one prays and talks with him a lot they do so because they enjoy speaking with him and thus enjoy hearing from him. This is what Jesus was speaking of when he said a time is coming and is here now when you will worship in spirit and in truth, for many prayer is not asking for things it's talking with God and listening to what he has to say in return that is how relationships work.

I don't know what you have experienced to have this odd view on prayer and how God thinks but I can assure you it's not correct

your POST makes 'no sense', for all of us who pray to our Heavenly Father in Sincerity/Truth, definitely Hear His Voice,
in 'what-ever' way He decides to communicate with us...it is our only REAL/PROOF,
and it binds us even more profoundly into His Holy Family...

?

So, we should not be still, and know He is God? We should not listen to/for the Holy Spirit to guide us? How does that make sense to anyone? God desires a personal relationship with His children. Part of a personal relationship is each communicating with the other. If we should not take time to listen to God, how exactly are we to learn what He has purposed us to do? How are we to learn? How are we to grow spiritually?

FROM THE BEGINNING: God spoke to His children. Check out Genesis if you doubt this.

[for me anyway] prayer is in no wise a two way communication, that God has something to say to us; rather we can behold two examples in (Luke 18:1-14): the first example deals with that we should always pray, and not give up; the second deals with our attitude toward God: in pride or humility; and which is justified.

What I am noticing is that there seems to be different understandings of what this person (hastrup) is saying. What I take from it is quite ok with me, yet, others see it very differently. Don't know why the misunderstandings though........

I see him saying that we SHOULD NOT pray to God as if we were praying to dead idols who CAN NOT talk to us, but we SHOULD not only pray to God, but take the time and make the effort to LISTEN to Him as well.......

That is what I take from his comments............and, honestly, I don't see the problem with that.

God gets angry that we talk to Him? We're making an idol out of God? I'm not feeling this.
If we make our own genie in a bottle and call him "God" who does whatever we "pray" to him, then yes God would be angry because we don't listen and don't pray to the TRUE GOD but a made up image who, grants our lusts and desire without changing our hearts and minds to conform to His will.

Yeah I don't get it either.

He is just exhorting people to LISTEN to God not make a Santa wish list and call it prayer.

William Parker wrote a book reporting on an experiment on whether prayer was effective and wrote about the results in his book "Prayer can Change Your Life". The book tests three approaches to solving problems in lives: psychoanalysis treatment, prayer time without studying effective prayer in scripture, and prayer after group study of effective prayer in scripture. After 9 months they found psychoanalysis 65 % effective, no change in the second group, and prayer as they discovered it 72% effective.

The book is amazing, it truly shows the power of prayer when we follow what God says about it. It shows people conquering alcoholism, cancer, and living with a crabby mother in law. It is a book that needs to be read enough times to incorporate what it says in our way of living, it is instructions on how to follow the bible.

Prayer that is ineffective is prayer that concentrates on the problem, not on God's answer. Often the answer to a problem we are repeating to the Lord is simply to get rid of the judgments of people around us and let them free as the Lord gives them freedom to make their own choices. Taking away the stress often solves the problem, taking away the sin of judging lets the Lord work on the solution.

God knows the problem and the answer. We are to concentrate on the answer, not reinforce the problem by repeating it over and over. We don't have to explain it to the Lord, the Lord knows already.

I don't know, maybe I'm a bit strange in prayer compared to others.

Sometimes my prayers are desperate, other times they are said when I'm
half asleep. Admittedly, I can do the gimme gimme type of prayer as well.
At times they can be nonsensical, still at times I just can't get my brain together
to pray coherently. :) But that's ok, the Holy Spirit knows what we mean.

Whatever type it is, God seems to hear and answers.
Even this week I was praying half asleep for a good nights rest for me and my aunt,
she has been up a lot at night since she came out of hospital and shouting me up with
her. It's hard to think clearly when you are getting up 3-4 times a night. Last two night
since praying, things have been much better.

I don't think the words we use or how long we pray for, matters.
I think the key is to approach God with child like trust, knowing that the Heavenly Father
listens and delights in His children. Knowing that we can run to Him etc.

I once had a dream of me and Jesus walking along a road, I was a child in the dream
sometimes running ahead, sometimes walking hand in hand. The overall thought was
of being a friend of God.

Children don't analyse or over think things, they don't plan ahead they just act.
Just thinking about this I got a thought of a young child laughing and running towards
her grand father giggling with delight, the grandfather leans forward with open arms.

Then there is the parable of the prodigal son where the father was watching and waiting
for the son.

God is not distant or remote, we no longer have to approach an angry mountain. We don't
have to spiritually beat ourselves up or approach Him with wringing hands.

I use to think that when praying I had to run through a prayer model in my head.
Ya know the kind, Adoration, thanksgiving, Praise, Repentance, Supplication, Thanksgiving etc.

I have to say that when you are in the middle of a crisis, that prayer model goes right out
of the window! When a car hits the side of your house or when the doctor says your relative
wont let the night, the last thing on your mind is to stop and think about the right way and
wrong way to approach God. You just pray!

God in His great mercy hears.

Prayer does not have to start with dear heavenly father and end with amen.
It can also be singing hymns, praise, telling God about your day, asking what He thinks.
It doesn't just have to be in church or during your quiet time, it can be on the bus or train,
while going to the shops, while watching the news. It can be any time.

The best most sincere prayers are those without structure or formality. It's when you are just
being you, and you are just chatting to God.

It took me a long time to figure this out after a life time of being told by others how I
should pray. :)

I listened to a sermon that true prophecy is when we stop judging others and start speaking into their life how God sees them, encourage them to become the person God meant them to be....not our vision but God's.

I am not into the whole WOF movement where they say,you can speak curses into the lives of others, but i do believe if you pray to see those around you as who they could be if they truly trusted and KNEW God had their own active prayer life....then you will see changes in those around you because you will see how God is working in their life.

Sometimes we all need words of encouragement because it's easy for me to see God working in others than in myself, when I am under attack by the enemy.

Amen, Miri. God hears us even when we can't put words to our needs.

Romans 8

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Effective prayer is getting closer to an intimate relationship with God. If it doesn't do that, it is not effective. My example is this: I open the bible randomly, read ten or so verses...close the bible and put myself in the presence of God. I've never asked Him for anything, nor have I heard Him say anything. In each case, He takes me to places I've never been and each time I feel I want to cling to Him even more. It's my example; if it encourages someone, that's great...if not that's ok too.

Don't you think that God requires us to be free of sin so He can communicate with us?

"But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear" (Isaiah 59:2).

That would require honesty with ourselves to identify our sins and truly ask forgiveness with repentance.

while those things you posted are true, they are things we should do daily, the have nothing to do with effective prayer :D

If it was not true that our sins separate us from God so He turns His face from us as scripture tells us then Hitler could have as effective prayer as we can who repent and go to Christ for cleansing.

When Christ gave us the outline for effective prayer He told us to address it to the Father, knowing the Father is Holy. We need to want His ways in our life and our world. We need to ask Him for our needs after we give acceptance, love and forgiveness for all other people. We need to ask for God's help to live a blameless life and help to live in our world surrounded by evil. Then we need to give praise to our holy God.
