Im on a whole bible reading marathon and came across this scripture. Ive prayed about its revelation because it really got me thinking;
1. why God wanted to kill Moses after giving Him an assignment...my version of verse 24 says '...that the Lord MET him...' was this a face to face meeting that as scripture states 'no one can see God and live' but again its not like God walks in the physical.
2. and how could such a sacrifice ease God from killing Moses...

this passage really had me thinking. what revelation did you get from this passage?

While in the flesh nobody does see God face to face, but can see the spirit of the Lord. As Mary and the Apostles saw after His resurrection.

Remember Father, Son, Holy Spirit. All of one accord but different forms.

As for the circumcision that was done to appease God, this is more symbolism that shows all through out the OT to the NT that the will of God has to be done in your life to achieve salvation. You can not be God's chosen if you do not do His will.

It was not a sacrifice.

God was going to kill Moses for disobedience in not circumcising his son.

Zipporah circumcised him to save Moses.

The consensus of several of my commentaries support Elin. In addition, most say that the meeting was by angel with a sword. Since it appears that Zipporah saw them too, I think that this is the best description.

Exo 4:24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him.
Exo 4:25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.
Exo 4:26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

I have a different take on these verses. I don't think the "him" in verse 24 is talking about Moses at all, I think it's talking about Zipporah's son because judgement starts at the house of the Lord.

Circumcision is the cutting off of the flesh... In other words I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me. Moses and Zipporah symbolically through circumcision applied the blood to their son way in advance of the killing of the first born in Egypt. That's my opinion.:)

Bingo. That's my take on it as well.

i agree that there wasn't any sacrifice -- but that Moses had been living among a pagan people, and had not separated his family by the sign of the Abrahamic covenant, circumcision. because Moses was being sent to lead Israel out of captivity, he and his household should have been sanctified for the purpose, and his children should have been circumcised as a sign.
this is the reason the Lord was angry - and could still have fulfilled His purpose through Aaron, but demonstrated to Moses the necessity of obedience through His anger.

isn't it interesting - look, here is the image of Christ! because our hearts are circumcised, so that we are able to stand in His presence, and that not of ourselves, but by our Lord Jesus and the ministration of the Holy Spirit! so we, as the church and bride of Christ, are sanctified by our Lord and husband in the same way through the regeneration of our hearts and minds by the Spirit, so we can be redeemed before God! He is our "bridegroom of blood" - and by His blood we are sanctified and justified before God, like Moses was also spared because of blood, and later, at passover, the houses whose doorposts were marked with blood were shown mercy.

thank God for this mercy! without His blood we are hopelessly lost!

(BTW - isn't it nice to see a topic here where everyone is pretty much on the same page?) :D

Should also be noted Zipporah was a Midianitess and circumcision was a foreign and bloody idea to her.

1. why God wanted to kill Moses after giving Him an assignment...
I would quote the commandment but it's late. It goes something like this, Thy Shall Not Kill

But Moses did kill. He killed in cold blood and then hide him in the sand.

2. and how could such a sacrifice ease God from killing Moses...
The God I know forbids killing and not a doer of it. But Moses was,..,

I don't think the "him" in verse 24 is talking about Moses at all, I think it's talking about Zipporah's son becausejudgement starts at the house of the Lord.
It was also Moses' son.
The Abrahamic covenant did state that the one who was not circumcised must die,
so that would be the child.

Note Zipporah's detestation of the blood of circumcision,
which was probably why the baby had not been circumcised.

Circumcision is the cutting off of the flesh... In other words I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me. Moses and Zipporah
symbolically through circumcision applied the blood to their son way in advance of the killing of the first born in Egypt. That's my opinion.:)
Or they just came into obedience to the Abrahamic covenant of circumcision to avoid its death penalty,
which was the issue.
