This is a subject which I always seem to get random answers. I believe I almost understand this fear but I am still praying for knowledge.

For example:

Is it gut wrenching teeth grinding fear?
Is it more out of respect?
Is it fear of a fire inferno?
Should I not fear because He is all forgiving?
Is it fear of _____:(_______?

I would like to hear the way you think.

Thank You!
God Bless!

I think to have fear of God is to not do anything that He thinks is wrong. Which I guess is reference too, because you care so much about Him, that you would not do anything that He says is wrong.

I believe fearing God means reverencing Him and submitting to His will.

The Hebrew word usually translated as fear in the OT is yara. That word means to shake.

Here are two verses of the OT that use the word yara.

Gen 3:10 And he said, "I heard You in the garden and I was afraid (yara) because I was naked, so I hid."

Deu 6:13 Fear (Yara) Yahweh your God, worship Him, and take your oaths in His name.

The Hebrew language expresses emotion in a different way than we do. For instance, we say we love. Their word for love means to bring gifts. They did not say they were overcome with emotion, they said they were shaking. They were a very emotional people, even though they didn’t have words for the emotion they were feeling, but told of the action the emotion caused, they understood the emotion that caused the action.

In Genesis we understand what caused the shaking, and in Deutonomy we understand the shaking was caused by reverence and awe.

I think all people who translate scripture from Hebrew should be praised, they simply have to have the HS with them to even attempt it. And we need the HS, all the learning we can manage, and an open mind to the Lord.

I think you will find the biblical use of the word fear falls into two categories. In the first category fear means to be afraid of. Here is one example of that:

""Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell." Mathew 10:28

The second category of the word fear is very different from how we use it in English. This use of the word fear means to be in awe of. Here is an example of that:

"I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well. " Psalm 139:14

I believe there is a discernment that comes from the Conviction of Holly Spirit when it comes to fear.

When I was lost and willfully sinning I was afraid of God, scared of or feared God.
When I accepted Christ I was in fear that I needed Christ in my life.
Now that I know Christ the fear is more of a Great Awe of knowing and loving God.

Think of the best example you can of an earthly father, who does all in good and fairness, spends time with you, teaches, etc. He is friendly, gentle and loving. Imagine he just also happens to be the king, but he's also perfect in that role and the whole country thinks he's awesome.
Put yourself in the role of about a 7 year old child and imagine the way you would "fear" this father, and in what manners he would express gratitude and displeasure, how he might punish or reward you, etc.
Remember, you're trying to imagine the best possible example of a righteous father's power.
The fear of YHWH is clean like this.

Not sure of every instance the word is used. But lets use this one for a example :

Proverbs 1:

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Hebrew :
yir'ah
yir-aw'

feminine of 'yare'' (3373); fear (also used as infinitive); morally, reverence:--X dreadful, X exceedingly, fear(-fulness).

Depends on who you are. If you are bad then it can be fear, if you are some one God loves and you love Him, I use the word revere .

Here is one more example :

Matthew 10 :

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

In this sense if you were given a choice who to fear for what reason. It would be God because of the fact that He can cause the soul to die .

Greek word for fear as used here :

obew
phobeo
fob-eh'-o

from foboV - phobos 5401; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:--be (+ sore) afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.

Just to take it to a prime:

5401
foboV
phobos
fob'-os

from a primary phebomai (to be put in fear); alarm or fright:--be afraid, + exceedingly, fear, terror.

We know sin is very bad in His sight... And He loves those that love Him. And wants to protect and love and has done that many times in the Bible we can read all the instances He has showed all the love and protection . The ultimate was giving His only begotten's son life for us.

Remember ---->. There is "freedom" in Christ

Fear---> appears when we have (bought a lie...)

It is written!! 2 Timothy 1:7
7*For God ( has not) given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Fear---->. appears and is present when we have bought into the lie that someone or something is in more control
Than god is ....
read up on Gods character .... This will help you a lot !!!

(13) The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

the fruits of the spirit are - love, joy , peace, patients , kindness and long suffering ...

Perfect love casts out fear. And fear is not something God puts in us.. If I fear it is usually while naked in sin .. Knowing God is all seeing of what I'm doing ... It's my own sin Wich brings my fear...
Being in a livingrelationship with God.. He tells us everything good we are .. He tells us who we are.. Upon "believing God" he straightens out our corrupt beliefs of who we are in Him... It took me a while to figure out tue same kind of questions your asking .. And it's awesome you're asking them .. I dedicated a lot of my time to God because I never seemed to get tue same truth from everyone else's opinions ... So in going to the man "HIMSELF" .. I began asking Him questions ... "who" do (You /God) say I am? "what" do (you/God) say your character is
Like ? upon asking go directly these questions , I devoted time with God in His word ...I had never been to a bible class nor read the bible .. I just started in the index and began reading everything on the topic of love... Then a decision came for
Me to
Make ... who do I believe ??? God or everything else I had heard or ever learned about God love... I knew right there, I would believe God.. casting all " opinions" out.. A good discernment is first asking the quest ion God still to this day asks us ... "WHO" do you believe .. I would recommend you go to the man Himself on tjese questions you have .. otherwise you start chasing " foxes into rabbit holes". Wich are " opinions of men" handed to you .. And we all know we have them.. But ultimately going to God directly with questions and then spending time reading His word .. I found he is 100% accurate, never changing , always the same in what he tells me ... I never have to guess ... I see so
Many directions thrown at questions .. It's really hard to know wich way to go... Thats why its so valuable to
Allow god to lead and answer questions for us ..This could be a very fun beginning for you in building a deeper root in this area of your relationship with Him.. It's one on one and very personal.. Have fun in the journey .. He's about to show you some very cool things in the area of fear... Wich he casts out fear of Him and replaces it with a respect and love "for" Him...
Blessings to you in it
Me I am finding he says to others ...

A quote from Scott Hahn:

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but is only the beginning. The love of the Lord is really the end of wisdom.

Luke 12:15
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
Matthew 10;28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

These two scriptures not just from one account but two.
Like 2 witnesses to one story.

There should be fear of the Lord for those who are still unsaved
This was said in Psalm 69 by David for those who had no respect for or didnt fear the Lord.

22May the table set before them become a snare;
may it become retribution anda a trap.
23May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever.
24Pour out your wrath on them;
let your fierce anger overtake them.
25May their place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26For they persecute those you wound
and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27Charge them with crime upon crime;
do not let them share in your salvation.
28May they be blotted out of the book of life
and not be listed with the righteous.

And this in Revelation
Rev.3:5: "Hethat overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." We overcome by our faith which is exhibited by faithfulness.

Some may be blotted out of the book of life, if they fear not the Lord and his righteous decree

Some may suggest well yeah thats fine unless you're saved
Ok so what if one is saved then what is there to fear if Christ loves us
The same still
So what can one be expected to overcome?
read these previous verses of Psalm 69 which David wrote of and endured

1Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck. 2I sink in the miry depths,
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me. 3I am worn out calling for help;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
looking for my God. 4Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,
those who seek to destroy me.
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal. 5You know my folly, O God;
my guilt is not hidden from you.7For I endure scorn for your sake,
and shame covers my face. 8I am a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my own mother’s sons; 9for zeal for your house consumes me,
and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. 10When I weep and fast,
I must endure scorn; 11when I put on sackcloth,
people make sport of me. 12Those who sit at the gate mock me,
and I am the song of the drunkards.

Very much the same thing we are told we must endure as Christ did,
ridicule, embarrasment, trials, to NOT seek to be friends with the world, or the cool one, or popular with the masses or politically correct etc.
We are called to speak boldly and courageously for God and to not be cowards for him. his name and his word.

When were saved, what we fear then is not so much hell
But more upsetting him if one is trying to please the world and make friends instead of pleasing God regardless of what anyone thinks.

Fear of the Lord means we respect his ability and willingness to discipline us when we need that discipline, I think. It is good to understand that discipline can be very severe when nothing else will bring us to repentance.

The LORD takes pleasure in those that fear him!

Psa 147:11 The LORD takes pleasure in those that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

The fear of the Lord is downplayed in Christian circles today, and many will take offense when you tell them to repent, stop sinning, and seek the mercy of God through fear, respect, awe, and reverence of His awesome power over sin, temptation and the devil!
Now this fear can be taken in and out of context:
H3372
ירא
yârê'
yaw-ray'
A primitive root; to fear; morally to revere; causatively to frighten: - affright, be (make) afraid, dread (-ful), (put in) fear (-ful, -fully, -ing). (be had in) reverence (-end), X see, terrible (act, -ness, thing).
So in one way the fear of the Lord causes the broken soul to fall on their face before His majesty, in humble repentance, a real and genuine repentance that cannot be faked or mistaken for the weak confess and believe message being sold by the truck loads throughout the apostate system of lies!
The Lord takes pleasure in those who humbly fear Him, and His great power to send them into perdition unless they respect this fear, which is not the fear of a daunting parent who scolds their wayward child one minute, than overlooks their continued disobedience.
The fear of God doesn’t wink at sin and disobedience! It causes a true repentant soul to tremble at His awe and power, never take His mercy and grace in vain, by assuming He overlooks sin and disobedience.
His mercy and grace is selective and only goes out to the one who has forsaken their evil ways and thoughts, and have come to the mercy seat, not taking this mercy for granted.
To fear God is to love God, and never assume anything from Him, as we deny ungodliness and worldly lusts of the flesh, then live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age!
Psa 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
Tommy

TO ME IT IS A FORM OF RESPECT. AN ATTITUDE OF LOVE TOWARDS SOMEONE WHO IS MAJESTIC AND GLORIOUS, AND WORTHY TO BE PRAISED. :)
