What was the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?

Jesus had cast our evil spirits thereby demonstrating that the Kingly Rule of God had come upon them. But the Scribes had seen it, and knew in their hearts that it was of God, but they deliberately closed their minds to it. They so hated Jesus that they claimed that He cast out spirits by Beelzebul, a prince of demon.

Jesus pointed out that this must mean that the Devil was at war with himself. His kingdom would thereby be destroyed. If they persisted in this attitude they would be in danger of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.

In other words He was pointing out that the clear evidence of the Spirit at work was being refused because of blind prejudice. They were refusing to accept clear evidence of His working.

Thus they were hardening their hearts against truth in its most manifest form, and if they continued to do this the Holy Spirit would cease from working upon them because they had built up an impenetrable barrier against Him and His truth.. Then they would have 'blasphemed against the Holy Spirit'. They would have made it impossible for Him ever to convict them.

It was an unforgiveable sin because it closed them off completely from the work of the Holy Spirit and His revelation to them of the truth in that He had given them unassailable evidence, and they had closed their minds to it.

You denied and then affirmed my post.
That's why I said not exactly right. I added not only the unbelief, but they deliberate lying on the Holy Spirit or calling the works of the Holy Spirit OF SATAN. You see it wasn't the unpardonable sin because they didn't believe Jesus was the son of God, they could see later and get saved. But saying that the works of the Holy Spirit was OF SATAN caused Jesus to warn them about lying on the Holy Spirit or attributing EVIL to the Holy Spirits doings.

So its not only unbelief, but its attributing the Holy Spirits doings unto Satan or vice versa. You can repent of unbelief. You can't repent if you walk up to a bunch of people healed by God in prayer, and tell them, you were healed by the hand of Satan. I don't think people actually grasp what Jesus said there.

The problem is that in Hebrew Law everything must be established in the mouth of two or three witnesses.

Deuteronomy 19:15
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
Nothing in a court of Law can be established on 1 witness' testimony.

Jesus testified to his own Godhead, but as he was only 1 witness, the Pharisees were legally justified in rejecting his testimony.

The Holy Spirit came as the parakletos, the witness for the defence. Jesus explained that the Holy Spirit had to come.

Jhn 15:26
But when the Comforter (counsel for the defence) is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

What was the purpose of the parakletos? To provide the second witness to Christ's Godhead. Now the Pharisees had no legal wiggle room. It had been established beyond any doubt.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Counsel for the Defence (Comforter) will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The unpardonable sin has to do with speaking ill of the Holy Spirit. Those Jesus warned were accusing the Holy Spirit of being Beelzebub. In Mark, he warned them because they said he had an unclean spirit, but He was doing those works through the Holy Spirit.

The unpardonable sin is attributing to God something evil when He is good, which the Pharisees were attributing to Jesus something evil when He is good.

A person can blaspheme against the man Christ Jesus and be forgiven, but not against the Spirit and be forgiven.

The Bible says there will be many blasphemers in the last days, which we hear people in the world say God is punishing me,does not love me,does not care about me,is responsible for wars, and natural disasters, blaming Him for their problems, and the problems of the world, when God has nothing to do with it.

Blaspheming against the Spirit is attributing something evil to God when He is good.

Hi Ron: It is true that the religious folks were in danger of speaking ill of the Holy Spirit because they were saying that the spirit power Jesus used to heal was the spirit of Satan rather then the Spirit of God. It also stands to reason that it would be an insult to the Holy Spirit to claim that a person operating with the power of a spirit of Satan was the Spirit of God. A lot of that goes on today, professing Christians doing physical manifestations that are the work of evil spirits while they claim it is the work of God.

Or maybe you don't understand what God is doing today.......God still works through humans today. Everyone has different callings and different gifts. Most people hinder their calling and gifts of the Spirit because of Disobedience. God will not work through Disobedient people. When Israel disobeyed, they wandered in the desert 40 years.

Even Jesus had to Obey to gain the POWER/Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In Luke 4 Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert. After he refused SATAN by saying Thus saith the WORD, and denied Satan at every turn, he came out of the desert IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT.

Obedience brings forth the Gifts.

Hey there again J7! :)
If it frightens you so much, and if satan is kicking you around and always convincing you the unpardonable sin is something other than what it truly is, I would think you would want to solidly understand what it is so you could refute him with scripture straight from God so that he would flee you instead of harassing you to the point of exhaustion.

Have you been diagnosed with scrupulosity? This sounds like a friend of mine named Rex who has been diagnosed. Once he got some help from a doctor, he is much better now. He's going for his...Masters I think, now. Maybe there are some websites where you can talk with others about if this sounds like what you have. It helps to talk with people who are struggling with the same thing we are sometimes.
