The Assyrians didn't destroy Damascus which according to Isaiah 17 would become a heap of ruins. That's why Centuries later Paul made his way there and up till now Assad has been living there or is he living in one of the alleged ruins?
If we are to have a sensible discussion lets at least get our facts straight.
A sensible discussion would include the whole prophecy which mostly talks about the destruction of Israel that occurred within 10 years of Damascus' destruction.

Also, a sensible discussion isn't ordered around the interpretation of one word that can be interpreted more than one way. Those who ignore Isaiah 17's past fulfillment interpret the words ruinous heap (KJV) to mean only destroyed buildings. But that's not what the original text says in either Hebrew or Greek. In the Septuagint the word means downfall.

The OP (and you too) got the wrong impress that Jesus was talking about the last generation living on this planet.

He would use "that generation".

He used "this generation shall not pass until..." therefore He was talking about something else.
The word generation is used in two ways, one according to the flesh as in natural unconverted man as the “things of men”, the other according to the Spirit of God, as the invisible “things of God”. The things of men offend the things of God when they are assumed as one and the same .

One in human families possibly forty years the other dividing the generations as sheep from goats of those born again, the generation or beginning of those in Christ, and again separate from the other natural man, the evil generationin Adam….those who seek after a sign before they will believe.

This generation is speaking of the generation of Christ as in all in Christ that are born again shown by the ending of the genealogy in Mathew 1.And the not generation of evil, the generation of Adam as those who require a sign before they will believe. No sign and wonder given it.

When the veil was rent ( the time of reformation)it ushered in the beginning of the last days or last time.

The time of reformation had come the beginning of the last days, the day of the Lord or called the last time. The day of the second and final resurrection and also the day of judgement for those who believe not the gospel.. all together as one work, in the twinkling of the eye.

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichristshall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is thelast time
.1 John 2:18

Acts2:17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughtersshall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shalldream dreams:

Hebrews1:2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointedheir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

The generation of Christ in respect to the incorruptible seed, (not seeds)oneChrist. Ending with Christ as the Son of man, Jesus, the supernatural.

Matthew 1 (KJV)
The book of the generation ofJesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac;and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

The other generation found in the Luke 3 the genealogy having to do with seeds of men. Ending with Adam, natural man.

Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Luke 3:38

Tis true, "race" is a social construct we all bleed red.

Your claim that Jesus was using the term race or nation makes no sense. He uses the same word in other places when talking to the Jewish leaders. In those places its clear that he is not talking about a race so why insist he does only in Matthew 24.
Also history shows that the nation did pass away for over 2000 years. Being Jewish is nothing to do with race either. Its to do with religion. I was born English. If I wanted to become Jewish I could convert at any time. My racial origin would still be English afterwards.

Israel can build wall to wall Temples but none of them will be Holy. Christ has replaced the Temple. He also became the sacrificial Lamb, The High Priest and King at his first coming and still is. We don't need a revived Temple and sacrificial system to remind us of his work at Calvary. He left us the Eucharist to do that. If a stone Temple had any merit God would have prevented the last one being destroyed or at least had a replacement built soon after as he did in regard to Solomon's Temple. Come to that there would have been no need for Christs crucifixion either. Israel could just continue to kill sheep.

"There will be wars and rumors of wars". Can you name one period of time when there was not "wars and rumors of wars"? Maybe Jesus was emphasizing the fact that he used when he told his disciples that "no one knows the day or the hour". I think he said that he would "come as a thief in the night". It could be in the next blink of our eyes, or in many more years. We need to be ready.
Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Many false Christ’s didn’t arise claiming to be Christ in the days of the early church, before the destruction of the temple, and the desolation of the land of Israel.

Matthew 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Wars and rumors of war between nations, weren’t allowed in the days of the Roman Empire, for there were no independent nations, nor kingdoms then.

Matthew 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Global news reports exist today as daily news, morning, noon and night. But global news and awareness didn’t exist in the past.

The rise of globalism is the result of science and technology. And science and technology grew together as the result of the use of coal, gas and oil. And the coal, gas, and oil are the direct byproducts of flood of Noah, which flood buried the world before the flood in and under two mile thick water laid sediments now found resting on the seven continents of the earth.

Globalism is the great sign of the time of the end. At Babel, about 100 yrs after the Deluge, God prevented globalism from occurring by creating the many languages that resulted in the nations of the earth.

God then moved to bring the gospel of Jesus into the world, and Jesus commanded the church to globalize it by preaching it in all nations, even to the four corners of the earth.

Satan wanted globalism before the gospel came, but wasn’t able to produce a truly global empire. When the gospel spread like fire and turned the Roman Empire world upside down, then Satan sought to dismantle the Roman Empire, and misdirect it so as to bring in the dark ages without the light of the Holy Bible available to the common man. In the meantime Satan fought Michael and his angels in heaven until he and his rebels were cast out, down, and into the earth.

God in preparation for the time of the end, and his time of great harvesting of the whole earth, published his Holy Bible, gave it to the common Englishman (that had asked for it, and greatly desired it) and sent them to the New World of the America’s.

Now the Holy Bible is kept in the United States as immigrants from all the world flood into this country. The immigrants shall receive the Holy Bible and it’s gospel of salvation into their hearts and at the right moment they will be sent back the way they came to publish the gospel globally in the times of global tribulation that must arise to attempt to prevent the spread of the gospel.

Satan knows his time is short, and that Jesus will return when the nation of Israel calls on
him to save them from the Antichrist, the beast.

So, now the sign to expect is the Revelation 6, rider on the white horse. The man that is to be given a crown, that will then rides forth promoting false peace, safety and righteousness: whom’s global policy is complete Global Disarmament requiring global governance.

Then the great tribulation will begin when the red horse rider rides forth.

During the great tribulation of the saints of God on earth, the whole earth will be harvested, then the end will come.

Matthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

As the earth convulses like a woman in travail to give birth, the global world will observe the wars, and rumors, and pestilences, and famines occurring worldwide and the heathens will clamor for the False One to come and save the world.
Now is the beginning of sorrows.

So Isaiahs prophecy was fulfilled by the Assyrians centuries ago. I am sure the estimated 90 million displaced Syrians would take comfort in that as they dodge the bombs falling on them
