The Message to Ephesus

2 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.
2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear evil men but have tested those who call themselves apostles but are not, and found them to be false; 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have, you hate the works of the Nicola′itans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’

When we are reborn we receive a new spirit (lampstand) and the Holy Spirit. This message to Ephesus warns that some who have received a new spirit (lampstand) have wandered from the love they had at first. It also says whoever is victorious over their trials here will eat from the tree of life ... but those who dont will lose their lampstand.

Those that are not victorious, I must assume, will NOT eat from the tree of life ... where does that leave them?

Anyone who says we can lose salvation doesn't really understand what occurs when one is saved. The dead spirit we all inherited from adam is made alive by God and combined with the spirit of Jesus, that can never be undone. What those who walk in darkness fail (or refuse out of pride) to understand is that we are no longer our old self. The old sin nature we were is crucified when we are saved and we are raised up with Christ. This is a work of God but those who will not walk in the light of that truth can not put aside their pride and self righteousness long enough to see it. Do not be angry with them as it is a very difficult concept indeed. It is ironic the hatred they show for Jesus finished work though not unexpected.

FISnookman7,

This just jumped out at me, when I think of the quagmire that Jesus pulled me from it is so hard to understand that hate that people have on for what he has done and keep wanting to add to it. It just halted me to sorrow.

Hmmm...the bible does say nothing "new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes)
but thankfully we are made new by the SON.... eternally new!

This OP reflects the belief that righteousness is an eternal possession, rather than GOD's imputation and righteous behavior. In other words, the belief that a person can be righteous yet do unrighteous things. But John is clear:
By this the children of God and the children of the devil are evident: everyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:10
Its both in that too, even as these two things come under the children of God, as he that either loves not his brother or hates his brother is not among the children of God

1 John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

A combination shown before it in 1 John 3:7 down thru 1John 3:14 an

Well, even down further than that but good verse.

We are commanded to be holy, 1 Pet 1: 15--16. And if we live holy, we are a holy people, 1 Pet 2: 9.
Plus, Rev 15: 4, Isn't in the Church age, we are in heaven at that time.
The point of Rev 15.4 is that GOD ALONE IS TRULY HOLY.

Thus 1 pet.1 15-16; 2.9. is talking about a different level of holiness. It is referring to 'being sanctified' (made holy). the Corinthians in I cor 1.2 were 'holy ones'. It refers to being set apart to God,

We are clothed with Christ.

Our new spirit is united with Christ in this way.

then what do you understand by being 'in Christ'? (rom 6.11 and often) and 'Christ in us' (col 1.27).?

So you use a verse from Revelation to discount the many verses saying we are sealed, redeemed, righteous, holy and promised? Do you see how sad this is? I know you will now say "post the verses" then you will ignore them and stick to your belief that you are more powerful than God, that you can undo the finished work of Jesus. No matter, if some are new here are the verses though there are many many more.
(sealed) Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

(redeemed) Gal 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

(righteous) Rom 3:21-22
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all[a] who believe. For there is no difference;

(holy) Heb 10:10-12 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

No one is the righteousness of GOD but Christ. We have imputed righteousness, and choose to either walk righteously, or not. Those who do not, will not inherit the kingdom.
I like to hear that kind of talk, for when we are led of the Spirit, the righteousness of Christ is applied to us,but that is only because we chose to be righteous, and represent goodness, first, before the Spirit can lead us,for if that was not the case the Bible would not say, they have a form of godliness;but deny the Spirit to lead them, and not everyone that says Lord,Lord, will enter heaven.

If it was not our choice to be led of the Spirit or not, everybody would be led of the Spirit, but we know the Bible says that is not so.

It is obvious that the Spirit will not lead us,and to have the righteousness of Christ applied to us,until we first choose to want to represent righteousness, and goodness.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Jesus said seek righteousness.

Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

They have to desire to be righteous.

Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus said your righteousness, which means we have to desire, and seek, after righteousness, before the Spirit will lead us.

Mat 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

John came in the way of righteousness, before the Spirit was poured out.

Act 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Psa 7:8 The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.

Psa 15:2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

Even in the Old Testament they could be considered righteous, before the Spirit was poured out,and Abraham believed God,and it was imputed to him for righteousness, which they could only do that by making the choice to do it,the same as in the New Testament.

The righteousness of Christ is imputed upon us,when we are led of the Spirit, but we have to choose to first represent righteousness, and goodness, before the Spirit will lead us,and when we are led of the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, and show the characteristics of the Spirit,so the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us,why, because we are acting like Christ.

It is not like the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us no matter our lifestyle, and does not matter if we have sin,not repented of,the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us,because we are led of the Spirit acting like Christ, which means if we allow the Spirit to lead us,God causes us,and gives us the gift,to have the same righteousness as Christ has, making us right with Him,like the man Christ Jesus is right with Him.

The righteousness of Christ is not imputed to us if we confess Christ, but engaging in sin,and do not want to represent goodness.

Proverbs 26:12

Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

Matthew 7:24

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Matthew 6:

5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

Proverbs 24:17

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,

A way of looking at Matthew 7:12

So in everything, do/say to others what you would have them do/say to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Proverbs 14:10

Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy.

Proverbs 14:12

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.

John 7:

16 Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.
17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

It means where one has the right to live. US citizens living in another country are not living in the US.
So lets look at the rest of the verse
Phillipians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ
Notice it says "FROM WHICH we eagerly wait for the Savior"

Dude, God IS Holy. It's an attribute of His. It's who He is in and of Himself. His holy and perfect character is His Glory. And He gives His glory to no one.

Those verses about being holy are meant to bury those humbled, not motivate the proud.

to lose your first love is not to lose God's salvation.

It also says whoever is victorious over their trials here will eat from the tree of life ... but those who dont will lose their lampstand.
the Christian is an overcomer, he will eat of the tree of life. The non-overcomer is a non-Christian.

the lampstand is the church as a whole. it was they who would lose their lampstand, but not necessarily their faith

Those that are not victorious, I must assume, will NOT eat from the tree of life ... where does that leave them?
where they have always been, with the professors. the virgins without oil.

We must read all scripture in relation to all the other very clear scripture of the finished work of Christ.

Who is the one who overcomes?

How do we overcome? John gives us the answer:

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 Jn 4:4)

Overcoming is not about jumping through hoops and satisfying the expectations of men. It’s about depending on The Overcomer who lives in you.

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 Jn 5:4-5)

Are you born of God? Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God? If yes, then the Overcomer lives in you and you can’t help but be an overcomer.

That’s why Jesus told the disciples to be encouraged during times of tribulation; because he – not they – had overcome the world and because they would carry his overcoming Spirit within them.

We are called to fight the good fight of faith! Believe in what Christ has done and His life will be manifested in every circumstance of our life while on this earth.

Here is a grace-based view of the Ephesian church. There were some unbelievers in there with the believers just like there is now in our churches and here in CC as well.

Here is one about." Forsaking Your First Love: What Was the Ephesians’ Problem? (Rev 2:1-7)"
