1.)

2.) The Greek word translated 'torment' in the parable generally refers to mental anguish or dread. The man is not currently being tormented by flames, but rather is dreading a future event--his eventual judgment by the fires.
Actually it does not, the meaning of the Greek word; "duno" or "basanos" as is used by Luke both refer to debasement, 'torment' is analogy and then within a metaphorical parable, and it's easy to see why modern english speakers who have trouble interpreting what Jesus is saying.

Okay, my mistake. Even so, that's still not describing the physical torture that you hear some preachers describe.

Greetings 'Densetzu',

Do not listen to preachers whose words do not match the words of the Bible. What is important is what Luke is writing about what Jesus said, when Jesus speaks in parables He is disguising the true meaning of His message, so that only the Holy Spirit can reveal the message, and do you know how the message is revealed? Often very slowly, over time, with study, contemplation and prayer! The command is "Hear Him", it is very important to pay close attention to every word Jesus utters, every word must be understood. But the Spirit is constantly testifying to the reader, guiding and leading into the truth, if I listen to what someone says then I go away and I study it and it does not corrospond with the Bible I reject it, but not I the Spirit rejects it, if I read a Bible commentary and it says the the 'Rich Man' has a fate of physical eternal torture in hell, I read what was written by Luke, what did Luke actually write in Biblical Koine Greek - then let the Holy Spirit testify, study the actual meaning of the words and let the Spirit do his mission. God will testify to you in the 'wilderness' (eremia) means 'solitude', you personally on your own, when you know His word, because He reveals Himself through His word...
