Many people will say different things here... I will limit myself to saying:

Speaking in tounges is ONE of several possible manifestations of the spirit. It is fully possible for you to be filled with the holy spirit without speaking in tongues :)

New King James Version (NKJV) ACTS 19:

[SUP]2 [/SUP]he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
[SUP]3 [/SUP]And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”
So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
[SUP]5 [/SUP]When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [SUP]6 [/SUP]And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Yes, to both questions. I think the scripture speaks to your question.
I personally have been baptized in Holy Spirit w/ evidence... and have
been used in prophecy. It is a gift we do not take for granted, nor do
we mock it. I know many do not believe this is for today. God gives only
good gifts. It is up to us to ask and receive. God bless you.

Eph 5:18 says, "Be not drunk with wine, but be filled by the Spirit." In what way are drunkenness and the filling of the Spirit contrasted? If you're drunk you're not in control, being filled by the Spirit you are in control of your faculties. Uncontrollable utterances are excluded. Whether or not one believes in speaking in tongues today, it should be done under control, orderly, and with interpretation according to 1 Cor.
With wine there is dissipation, or wastefulness, with being filled by the Spirit there is purposefulness and direction. With drunkenness there is a desire to escape the feelings/thoughts of life, with the Spirit there is an opening to the realities of this life.

What is the result of being filled with the Spirit? speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Notice the same results are given in Col. 3:16Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms [and] hymns [and] spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17Whatever you do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

So being filled by the Spirit is the same as letting the word of Christ richly dwell in you. Studying, understanding, hearing the preaching of the word. Then you'll have a song in your heart, have great community and fellowship, be thankful for everything, and live under God's good purpose.

First of all - NO ONE speaks in tongues. If they claim to do this, they are only speaking jibberish to prove to the gullible that they are "holier" than everyone else. In other words, they are lying.

The Holy Spirit is your conscience that inform you if you are doing something wrong or right. It guide you through life, but it is up to you to choose to listen or not. Once you have accepted that it is the Holy Spirit that is guiding you, not of your own thoughts, you will start seeing things clearly. The subconscious mind is the recorded information that you had collected over time and the information that you have inherent or taught from your parents and your environment, like a storage place that pass on to the next generation which it originally started from Adam. And the Holy Spirit retrieve it for you when needed.

If you're terrified of spiders, or fearful of snakes, then blame your parents.
A study challenges the widely held view that we are hard-wired to fear creepy crawlies and instead suggests we learn to be scared of them in the first years of life.

Fear of snakes is one of the most common - and in Britain - irrational phobias. Half the population is thought to suffer even though most have never actually seen a snake

I don't think that really follows either scripture or what I have experienced of life or watched in others. Almost everyone is born with a conscious, and scripture tells us that everyone has a sense of right and wrong. That does not say that everyone understands things of God, or are drawn to these things. That is what the Holy Spirit does.

Many people are able to read the bible as a book of poetry or a history, without being able to comprehend any of it as speaking of the spiritual word of God. That takes the Holy Spirit.
