Quite a bit of time.. to be honest. It's a big book. I don't think many start of reading from start to finish, but it is a worthwhile task.

I once read it takes the average reader 72-75 hours to read the bible. I personal plan to never stop reading the bible.

I got through the first 5 books this week. But I spent 8-10 hours a day for the first few days reading it. I am also making notes as I go though, so you may be able to shorten that time considerably if you are just doing a read through and not making notes. Start to finish, I'm not sure.

I have read -most- of the bible several times over since I was 15 or so, but all at different times and not in any particular order and not doing any real study as I read. That type of reading is really not beneficial. I suggest taking your time and studying it as you read to really make the time you invest worthwhile.

I haven't finished yet, but if you mean just reading it from start to finish, there are many programs to read it through in one year. Some Bibles even have these in them.

P.S. I'll probably finish the day they pat me in the face with a shovel.

I've been reading the bible in gradual process. I have finished already the NT...and so far I almost finish reading the OT. I wrote every verses which I think I liked. If I will finish reading all of these....I will start reading again from OT to NT. I will keep doing this as long as I live.

I remember as a new born Christian I was determined to go through the whole bible ready to do whatever it said...I died somewhere in the Levitical desert...somewhere around chap 17.

12 years, at least 4 hours a day... I took it all in at the pace GOD REVEALED what I read.... What is the use of reading and God does not REVEAL? Then it is just a book with words, but if God reveals it is GOD THE WORD.... John 1 in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was GOD!!!!! And the Word became man..... And you shall know the Truth (the Word) and the WORD SHALL MAKE YOU FREE.

This is my advice to all.... Let God help you KNOW THE TRUTH.... you shall be made free...

Cobus,
Then how come all the Word we hear from you is this or a similar passage? :) :)
1 John 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

I honestly feel as if I still haven't read it all, since now and then, when re-reading something, I have one of those, "when did God put that in there??" moments...lol

It's funny I have a friend who can read like 50 books on fantasy in one semester...and here I am saying, it takes me a year to read the entire bible if I do a bible plan but in reality it's like a lifetime...he looked at me like I was stupid or weak reader. I was like how about you try to read the bible :p....

Crossnote thank you for asking and here is the BEAUTIFUL ANSWER....

Those two verses holds the MYSTERY OF FAITH IN THEM......In 1 Tim 3 God ays that a deacon should hold the mystery of faith on a clear conscience.....So here is the WHOLE BIBLE in ONE sentance....

ALL Scripture points to ONE FACT, A Holy Man IN GOD... and that man is...... CHRIST IN YOU!!!!!!

My dear friend Crossnote..... The WHOLE Bible is going about only one thing... how God works to take a sinner and make that sinner in the IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF HIS SON JESUS CHRIST..... And God's complete work, is .... CHRIST JESUS IN ALL HOLY MEN....PERFECT LIKE HIMSELF...

Those two verses in 1 John 3:9 and 1 John 5:18, says it best.... They contain the WHOLE message and goal of God.

Ask me anything in the Bible, I have been blessed by God to know what I know, because ALL PERFECT GIFTS are from Him, even the one to have WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE.... His wisdom and knowledge....Two of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit... God gives to whom HE WANTS...

*Sigh* Still reading it :[ But I got the shortened version without the verses so it reads like a Novel and its alot more fluid. And I have to say that I approve :]

I read the new testament in about 2 months, but that was reading the same verse sometimes up to 7 times just so I would fully understand it... I have also yet to read revelations...
