I'm lost is probably an understatement. I grew up in a loving home, where my father was a devout Christian and we attended church every Sunday. My father (and his new wife, remarried after my mother passed away) are both devout Christians, lead Christian lives, and actively share their faith and blessings God has made on their lives. My father is happy all the time, energetic, and excited about the Lord, taking his troubles to God, praising God and thanking God in every aspect of his life.

I've reached out to God on numerous times during my life, primarily during times of trouble or pain, seeking, asking, pleading for God. Right now I am going through a particularly scary/tough time. This time feels different, as I look back on my life, and particularly during my marriage, I see a life of lying, moral deficiency, infidelity that makes me unable to even look at myself in the mirror. I know this is not the man I was created to be. The woman I strived to be the very best for I have hurt and disappointed time and time again.

Im scared, lost, and ashamed of what my life has become. I continue to pray to God asking for forgiveness and a changed heart. I want to let go of my own desires and have God lead me, but I dont really know what that means or how to do that. I wish I could be "captured" by God in the same way my father, his wife, and other Christians feel captured, excited, and like a personal collaborative relationship. I feel like before I can ask God to save or heal my marriage, if that is his will, then I am the one that needs saved and healed first. I pray. I continue to pray asking for forgiveness and a changed heart and desire to seek God, know God, and love God. I don't know how to find God, or get closer to God, or feel captured. I search and read online over and over again "how to find God", "how to know if God is talking to you," I am unable to make the changes that my life needs, I need God to come in and lead my life. I dont know how to do that. Please help.

Although I already believed for decades and was content in faith, I felt at times a bit wary of myself.

I asked the Father to be totally in control of me and keep me in His loving hands. Since that prayer, which a renew often, I have had a wondrous life full of what others would call miracles, and I call His demonstrating His love for just me.

I am praying you will experience the same. Be certain to repent and want to be there. when you are in His hands, look around, you will see the rest of us.. God bless you ..

First you need to know that you are not the deeds you have done in the past. Those are human deeds, they are the way of flesh. The minute God saw that man accepted those deeds, God gave a way to manage them. This is a way to be free completely of them, have them wiped out as if they never happened. You will still have to pay the price for what they earned in this life, but your soul can be freed completely of them. No more guilt, and what you would see in the mirror is a righteous person, free of all sin.

All it takes for this is to ask. Ask Christ to forgive your sins, and use what He did when He died in the flesh and lived in the spirit to pay for our sins. It is a supernatural thing that happens, but it lasts for an eternity. We live then, with the Lord, eternally.

Confess your sins to God, confess Jesus as Lord, repent of your sins, read your Bible, and believe what it says. God speaks in his word. How we feel has nothing to do with the truth of God. I do or don't feel any given way at any given time doesn't change one thing about God or his word or his promises.
If you are a believer Satan does not as some have suggested speak in your mind. He speaks to those whom he has Dominion over, he will have them speak to you or he will put before you things that entice you into thinking a certain way. The rest is your own flesh tempting you.

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. I had a long conversation with my father yesterday, as he broke down crying saying he has been praying for this day for so long. I continue to pray and ask the Lord to light a fire in me to get into his word to know him, seek him, love him. I find myself taking time out of the day to talk to God, but I feel like I keep talking about the same things over and over again - Lord I need you, I need a changed life, Im unhappy, I feel empty, please reveal yourself to me, please direct me, I feel alone. My father said I needed to find some good Christian friends.

i rejoice that you are seeking fellowship with the Lord, and I am confident that He will find a way into your consciousness. There is only one way of salvation, but everyone comes to the cross in a unique way. Therefore it is difficult to give specific instructions apart from the givens of faith, repentance and commitment. So all suggestions you get may be helpful to greater or lesser degrees. A few ideas I would recommend include keeping your focus on Jesus rather than on your neediness, praying short prayers often throughout the day, thanking God for every good thing that happens, thinking about the fact that God is as delighted with any small step you take as any parent is with a baby's first steps. Meditate on Jesus' life, character and promises. Good short prayers might be, "Lord, have mercy," "Lord, I believe; help me in my unbelief," "Lord, you are welcome in my heart." I stand in awe of the fact that God has said that He delights in His children Blessings on you.

The question you are asking is the same question the Apostle Paul asked after being born-again, but yet he finds himself being dominated by the sin nature in Romans 7 (failing the Lord by not understanding how to live for God). In other words, how do I do the what to do that the scriptures are asking me to do?

The sentence of death must be written on the flesh-the power of the Cross must be entered into before we can steadily walk with God.

The only way to God is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6)...the only way to Jesus Christ is by the Means of the Cross (Luke 14:27). The only way to the Cross is a denial of self (Luke 9:23). If any person tries to come any other way, Jesus says, "they are a thief and a robber" (John 10:1).

God has chosen to operate His work from the basis of faith. "The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:2) is God's prescribed order of victory for the Believer over sin, the world, the flesh, and the Devil. This means that the Believer must place and maintain proper Faith the size of a mustard seed exclusively in Christ (who He is) and His Finished Work (what He has done), i.e., The Cross, i.e., The Blood of Jesus. Why? Because whatsoever that is not faith is sin. By doing so this enters the Believer into justification and progressive sanctification that gives the Holy Spirit the legal means to keep all commandments and all laws that are impossible for us to do. The Holy Spirit renews the mind when Faith is placed and maintained in Christ and Him Crucified. Why? Because we are now operating in the Spirit. The presenting of your body as a living sacrifice and the renewing of the mind is not a Christian discipline nor a work of labor, but an act of Faith to believe only - daily. No Believer can fix the flesh with the flesh. All fruits that are added to the leaves of the Believer must be done by the Holy Spirit or you enter the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21).

The Holy Spirit works strictly within the parameters of the "Finished Work" i.e., "the Cross of Christ", which demands that our Faith be exclusively in the Cross of Christ. The reason is simple, that's where the price was paid, and the victory was forever won (Romans 6:1-14; 1 Cor. 2:2; Gal. 5; Gal. 6:14; Eph. 2:13-18; Col. 2:14-15).

For whatsoever is not of faith is sin. (Romans 14:23)

The Law Of The Spirit Of Life In Christ Jesus gives the Believer victory over the world, the flesh, and the Devil.

Victory over the world: Galatians 6:14 ; 1 John 5:4
Victory over the flesh: Galatians 5:24
Victory over the Devil: Hebrews 2:14 ; Colossians 2:15

How does a Believer maintain faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross? By just believing in Jesus (who He is) and what He accomplished at Calvary Cross. Romans 4:5 - Galatians 2:19-21 NKJV - 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 NKJV - Colossians 2:11-15 NKJV

It sounds to me like God has already captured and changed your heart :) You say you do not know what to do, but you are already doing it: praying, repenting, seeing yourself as a sinner in need of God's grace. The good news is, the forgiveness you seek has already been offered through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross for the remission of our sins, as long as you accept it. Knowing what not to do may be half the battle won. Jesus has overcome on our behalf, and God draws near to the broken hearted. Brother. Lay your burdens on Him Who gave His life for you, that you may be free of the guilt and shame that plague you, and rejoice in being set free from the chains that bound you to death. The rest will follow, for God keeps His promises.

PRO. 3:1.
My son, forget not My Law; but let your heart keep My Commandments:
2.
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you.
3.
Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck; write them upon the table of your heart:
4.
So shall you find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5.
Trust in The LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.
6.
In all your ways acknowledge/consider' Him, and He shall direct your paths.
7.
Be not wise in your own eyes: fear The LORD, and depart from evil.
8.
It shall be health to your navel, and marrow to your bones.

The good thing is out feelings do not change the word of God. IF you come to Jesus HE will not turn you away. But you must pursue HIM as you did with what separated you from HIM. And ask HIM to empower you to separate from the sin that has you bound. Jesus desire to do this. You have to ask HIM in faith and repent, surrender then receive by faith. How you feel are not correct if those feelings are against the word of God. you have to position by faith and obey what is said to have the victory over the addiction. Jesus came to set you free and open prison doors. Trust HIM, callout to him and HE will answer you. Right now get on your knees throw up your hands and repent and surrender and ask the Lord to set you free. Cry out to Jesus and ask HIM to help you. HE will do it. The devil wants you to stay bound and disengaged. Jesus will help you.
