I think because it is God who does soften our hearts when we do receive his rest from us trying to work to get ourselves saved and staying saved. (Hebrew 4)The righteousness is one imputed to those who can rest . "It is God" who works in us to both will and do His good pleasure. Whether this in when we maintain keeping the commandment or when we fail and he calls us to repent.

We are to do all things without murmuring of those who we think they do not receive His rest freely with no cost on our behalf. According to Hebrews 6 He will not forget the goods works we do perform towards His name. We do have that power of Christ working in these bodies of death but it are not of us.

Things can get confusing when men think the reward will be different for each of us. The reward is redemption. The better thing that accompanies him working in us.

Did you notice that in Acts 2 Peter quotes this Prophecy of Joel as being fulfilled? read a verse back ":.. But this is THAT which was spoken by the Prophet Joel:"....

The New covenant is definately in effect already, if it isnt then we are dead in the water.
I would think that which is called "new" is the "restored covenant".A convennat of men and woman walking by faith of Christ as that which comes from hearing God not seen, the eternal. It is restored to the previous time period of Judges when there was no outward representative of God as King of kings. The Holy place as to the glory of God unseen was restored

It had come to an end when God gave over the apostate Jew that which they should not of. The separation between men and woman shown by the different court levels (Jewish men, woman, Gentile} had come to a end, according the prophecy of Joel it is reformed the restored order when woman and men severed as Judges bring prophecy the word of God . The woman's court and the court of gentiles and Jewish men the highest court as those who could participate in the ceremonies used as shadows were used as a parable for the time then present as a shadow it disappeared when Christ said it is finished. The use of Jewish flesh to be used as a metaphor in parable had to a end

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure/parable for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them "until" the time of reformation.Hebrew 9:8-10

From my experience many Christians circle would assume .What reformation and what was it restored to? Recognizing the fifteenth a carbon copy but not the first century reformation.

Not to me........ :) Encourages, urges, but NOT forces...........works with, gives ability to........but NOT forces........to me, that is what it means.
he writes "powerfully, successfully" -- effective causation, right? but it seems to me that 'without compulsion' is 'not compelling' which is synonymous with 'ineffective' and 'weak' and has the connotation of low success rate.
is this cause-and-effect or not? if i had an heart of stone that hated His ways, and He put a new heart in me that loves His ways, then i'm not sure i can say what He has done is 'without compulsion' if what He has done is exchange the thing that compels me. ya know?
it reads to me as tho Mssr. Poole is grappling with a somewhat calvinistic passage trying to maintain a somewhat arminian outlook on it.

For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!
