I know I have posted about ICOC before but I am looking for answers. I hope most of you know my story with ICOC so I won't explain that again. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about this church and what I should do about the lies I was told.

I posted a bunch of posts called "a mish mash of topics" outlining some of the stuff they said. I see now that a lot of what they said was rooted in Biblical truth but something about it still rubs me the wrong way. For example:

When they say "Emotions can stand in the way of listening well" they made it sound like ALL emotions are bad. They made it sound like we were not supposed to have emotions. I think I have gotten better at not believing this lie but I'm trying to find a way to support the other side of the argument. The side that's like "noooo emotions can be good." So any Bible verses would be helpful.

Here are the links to my mish mash threads in case you don't know what I'm talking about.

So I need Bible verses on

*emotions
*stress
*self-control
*who God is

I'll list the rest later. I have to get going to a family get-together. Thanks!

Regarding emotions, Jesus wept many times. If you read the Psalms, David was very emotional. Had his highs and lows, and expressed them to God. Job was very upset and expressed his misery to the Lord. Psalms 62 tells us to "pour out our hearts (emotions) before the Lord. I think that is the secret - pouring them out to Him alone (not journaling, or phoning your best friend). Whenever I do this, I rest quietly in His presence afterwards, and ALWAYS have a response back from the Lord. Sometimes it is only a comforting thought - sometimes it is a wash of peace. It is what we do with emotions that is the key.

When fearful, I make a list of my fears, and take them one by one to the Lord in prayer. And WAIT to see/hear his response on them. Many times I, all of a sudden, see it differently, or receive a new perspective on them. Most of the time, I'm just given a sense to surrender something I'm trying to hold on to. What this is is just following the scriptures on giving your anxieties to the Lord.

I know I only covered a little bit of what you wanted. But there are others who will jump in, I'm sure.

Have you read the comments posted by others on all those threads? Seems that would be a good place to start.

I have but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it and making sense of it all (not just the comments but the comments in addition to all the junk in my head)

Ever had a disagreement with someone when you were really upset? How hard was it to hear what they said, not filter what they said through your anger? Then later you talk about it again when you calm down and suddenly you hear what they were trying to say previously, better. Now that the emotions are not in the way you can listen better.

Letting emotions become too dominant makes you less likely to hear, less likely to think things through. This isn't to say emotions are bad, but there are times when they are not beneficial.

My wife attended 14th Street in college... which became Crossroads. Kip was trained there.
She said it was a controlling group of narrow minded fanatics, even back then. We both left the entire CoC mess of legalism about 20 years later, and have not looked back for even a moment.
