Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

Think about this one thing. At the North pole continuous light can shine for days, the sun showing at all points of the compass, going round and round. Then at certain times of the year it's dark for days and days. If the earth were flat, it would be the same way for the entire planet, but it ain't.

The axis of the earth is tilted, sometimes at it's farthest point from the sun, and sometimes at its closest point to the sun, but the ice still don't melt with continuous sun. Common sense science, that all people can observe, proves this point. The earth is not a perfect ball, it's actually oval, but it's still round like a ball.

[SUP]Job 26:10 [/SUP]He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.

The following is from this website.
https://answersingenesis.org/answers/books/taking-back-astronomy/the-universe-confirms-the-bible/

This verse that indicates the spherical nature of our planet. This verse teaches that God has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness. This boundary between light and darkness (day and night) is called the “terminator” since the light stops or “terminates” there. Someone standing on the terminator would be experiencing either a sunrise or a sunset; they are going from day to night or from night to day. The terminator is always a circle, because the earth is round.

For the earth, the terminator occurs not on a cratered rocky surface, but primarily on water (since the earth’s surface is 70 percent water). The mentioned biblical passage would be nonsense if the earth were flat, since there would be no true terminator; there is no line to “step over” that separates the day from night on a flat surface. Either it is day everywhere or night everywhere on a hypothetical “flat earth.” However, the earth does indeed have a boundary between light and darkness which is always a circle since the earth is round.

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

It seems like the OP is constantly trying to challenge the Word of God by finding fault with it!

I hope he is just trying to reconcile things in his mind he does not understand! Still, it might be better to pre-suppose the Bible is absolutely true, and then seek understanding of the things he doesn't understand. Or pray, and trust God to answer in his time. I remember having questions about the OT for 25 years. Finally, when I got to seminary, it was God's time and all those questions were answered satisfactorily!

In other words, instead of focusing on what you do not understand, focus on what you do! Like, the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians, for example!

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Gal. 5:22-23

Or, how to love your neighbour as yourself!

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

"East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." Over a century ago, long before anyone became aware of the term multicultural, Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called "The Ballad of East & West."

"Oh, East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgement Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!"

When we are forgiven of our transgressions, they TOTALLY disappear, as far as the east is from the west. That's one of the big reasons God made the earth round, so we don't look keep looking back at our own ploughed field.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12)

Everything in creation is of spiritual in nature. Yes that sounds like an oxymoron, but it ain't because "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

"No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. (Mark 2:21)

Jesus isn't talking about His Father's previous covenants, He's referring to us. He makes us a new man/woman.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

If the earth is a flat circle, how do you explain the 4 corners of the earth, and how do you explain the rising and the going down of the Sun,and the Sun is 3000 miles above earth, with all that light, but yet we do not see it for so long, and it is dark, for if it were that high in the air should not we see it as a light coming towards us,before if gives light to our area, but yet it can be quite light out during the morning, and yet we have not seen the sun yet,but if it 3000 miles above earth, why can't we see it,if it is light in our area in the morning.

Because we are cornered between four corners. Give me 4 quarters for that brilliant statement please.

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

flat earth believers want a literal interpretation of scripture before they will believe the earth is round. Chuck Missler points out that the 3 scenes of the rapture in Matthew 24 may argue for an earth with different time zones. Men work in the field during the day. Women grind grain for flour at the first in the day so the flour is fresh.
Joshua's long day was Mars ( a book Missler read said Mars and Earth lined up every 108 years) or the comet Venus before it was captured as a planet (James McCanney says the ancients recorded the comet Venus passed through our solar system every 54 years).

i think you might want to do some research on the relative size and physical makeup of typical comets and Venus.

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

nah, they only want a literal interpretation of 1 or 2 poetic verses. they don't want a literal interpretation of any of the Bible that mentions sunrise or sunset, or of the Psalm where David considers the stars and the universe and marvels at how utterly insignificant man is in light of the enormity and grandeur of God's handiwork.

in fact, my experience has been that most flat-ites basically want a Bible with only two verses in it, the one where it is written that God beholds on the compass of the earth, and another one mentioning four corners. odd because circles have zero corners, but hey, flat-ites never been known for logical consistency.

Re: If the earth is round, how to explain the expression "four quarters of the earth"

the psalms are not a science book u see.
read what david is writing when he is persecuted....... very poetic.

if taken literally we have hills clapping their hands n tings u see...... like willie-T always says put ur sandals on when u read the bible dont read it like a 21st century engineer looking for a specific blueprint of the universe.

Isaiah 11:12
He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

the word for corners is kanaph which means wings or extremities, not corner.

Even and orange can be cut in four quarters. Don't know what that has to do with being round.

If the earth is flat.........how do the oceans NOT DRAIN OFF?

The entire tonnage of ignorance required to believe the earth is flat would flounder a battleship (in my opinion).

So if all the water drains off wouldn't that make earth lighter and we would just continue to float up?

This photo representing all of the earth's water is quite astonishing. The deepest part of the ocean is 7 miles deep just a mere puddle to the earth. To the center of the earth is 3,958.8 miles.
