How do we live a holy life? Is this discipline a part of your life?

For many, holiness has received a bad name- certainly that is not God's will. When someone talks about holiness many people think they are talking about practices that are classed as weird. Perhap worse is the fact that holiness is not mentioned very much any more. And detrimental to the cause of Christ is when some "name the name of Christ", but they do not live up to their profession.

Laying all that aside, what does the Bible teach about holiness?
Peter 1:15 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
Holiness is about the way we live 7 days every week!

But what is holiness? Rather than going to the dictionary, what is it to you and what does the Bible say?

I am made out of a measure of Light, and Light is holy. I am a spirit, and not a flesh, because flesh is dead already (even though it's still a kickin, it's dead work and doctrine if it's after the flesh). Holiness in the flesh and spirit both at the same time is what you're talking about I think? I strive to be holy in the flesh, but holy flesh is dead flesh (in it's power to motivate and be motivated by evil). Sometimes I believe I'm not under the power of any but God alone, and that is a part of holiness (not being under the power of any but God). I am holy, but I am a spirit. I know my flesh is also holy when I'm overflowing with the oil of gladness/healing/etc.

Heb_1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Jas 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

It's the same oil.

God calls us unto holiness and it is an effectual calling.
To put it in scriptural wording, 'Work out your salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Phil 2:12b-13

Some people erroneously classify holiness as legalism, self-righteousness, or earning salvation.

It is God’s will that His children are holy as He is holy; He would not demand for it if it is unattainable. We are saved by grace through faith and this grace enables us to live a holy life thereafter. Holiness is actually the result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and His work in the believer's life. It is comes out a heart under submission to God, one that is walking in the Spirit by faith and has pure love for God. If one has not experienced the new birth their pursuit for “holiness” is as dung and displeases God (this is the scribes and Pharisees style or false holiness).

In addition, true holiness is not merely theoretical, it is seen in a believer's comportment, practical holiness (1 Peter 1:14-15), and their new life is different from their old unregenerated life (1 Cor 5:17). Throughout the bible we can see that God wanted His people to be different from the heathen.

Eph 4:24- And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

1 Peter 2:9- But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
1 John 2:6- He that saith he abideth in Christ ought himself also so to walk, even as Christ walked.
Heb 12:14- Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

rom that time nearly two thousand years ago, when our Lord Jesus Christ established His holy Church, many of its members have been glorified, that is, they have been recognized as saints. There are so many saints that it is impossible to number them all. Our church calendar, which lists the names of many saints, contains a barely perceptible fraction of the countless assemble of saints in the Kingdom of Heaven. Who are the saints? Many people have the impression that saints are some kind of rare beings far removed from us ordinary people. Others give the name "saint" to those who take no thought for themselves and work for the good of their fellow men, or who dedicate themselves to some high ideal. What does the Word of God, the Bible, tell us about holiness? The Gospel teaching about holiness is much more profound than anything described above. The Gospel teaches us that the purpose of life is to strive to become a saint: Be ye perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is perfect, said our Lord Jesus Christ. This means that we must strive towards the holiness of God. We are not only called to holiness, but we are in some measure, holy, because every man is God's creation, and bears the image of God. The meaning of our life consists in overcoming everything that prevents us from being saints, everything that keeps us removed from the perfect holiness of God. If we approach this question from this point of view, then holiness becomes the meaning of life not only for as small group of people - God's chosen - but for all of us. We became God's chosen the day when, through Holy Baptism, we became members of Christ's Church, for that is already a mark of "closeness"; it means we are dedicated to a new life, different from the lives of those who don't yet know God. Holiness is found in each and every one of us, but, unfortunately, sin prevents this holiness from revealing itself in our lives. Therefore, we must do all we can to war against sin, to cleanse ourselves through repentance,in order to allow the holiness of our souls to shine through the dirty film of sin which coats our soul. Those already glorified by the Church as saints are those who were able to remove from their souls this film of sin through repentance, prayer, good works and thereby enlightened not only themselves but also shed light upon the world surrounding them. Just as a mirror reflects light,so too, the saints reflect the divine light which comes from God. The saints in heaven see us, they love us and invisibly, silently and unnoticeably help us to war against sin, in order that we might be saved and become like them. "Become like them" - that means to fully restore ourselves the image of God, which was placed in us when man was first created. But man fell; he ruined that image and became estranged from God. To strive towards holiness - this means to over come all obstacles which separate us from God. Each of us must make an effort to fulfill - at least in some measure- the Gospel summons to "be perfect (holy, saints), even as your Father in Heaven.". If we can do this, we shall realize our calling.

:) WHAT IT MEANS TO ME IS A CONSTANT PRAYER LIFE. THERE ARE THE MANY TIMES, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO DO THINGS IN THE FLESH, WORDS, THOUGHTS, ETC. IT'S JUST ENTERING INTO THE HOLY OF HOLIES THROUGH THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB, JESUS, AND ASKING FOR PARDON, AND HELP, DELIEVERANCE. WE CANNOT MAKE IT ON OUR OWN, AND THE MORE PILES OF UNCONFESSED SIN, JUST MAKES ONE A HOARDER, AND NOT A BOARDER OF LIVING IN THE PRESENCE WITH THE LORD. THE VEIL WAS RENT IN TWO. THIS WAS GIVEN TO US ON CALVARY, THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER IN TO THE THRONE ROOM, BEFORE THE FATHER, THROUGH HIS SON. IT'S A CONSTANT RENEWING, AND SOMETIMES RENEWING THE HURTS, UNTIL HEALING COMES. HOW CAN WE BE HOLY WITHOUT THE PRESENCE AND IN HIS PRESENCE OF HIS GLORY. WE MUST ENTER IN ,

Good stuff..i am glad others agree..sadly i have been told by some here i stand condemned because i speak with sheer conviction that its God's will that we be holy!1 thessalonians 4:3..
i believe some sadly appeal to grace only gospel not seeing or choosing to not see that God has enabled us to live for him..in 1 john 3 it says that the believer does not practice sin because God's seed is in him!(verse 9), therefore we are not to live in persistent sin..yes we may battle the urge to sin..but we have been empowered to live differently through God's spirit.
Many will say if you believe in holiness, you are basically a catholic..and works oriented..what about in 1 peter 1 like stated before..and 1 thessalonians 4? is it good to just have good theology but live like the devil? thus rendering your theology nothing but a good belief system? What good is that to just believe? Even the demons believe? Does that save them?
I had one say here that if Paul could not live a holy life, what makes us think we can? Well..i got news for you..Paul said, I fought the good fight of faith, meaning he finished well..
and why so much focus on Paul? Yes he had good things to say, but we follow Christ, we are christians..not Paulinians! I am afraid many today are more grace only Paulinians and not truly looking at the full Gospel..which is grace, but the response to grace is, i see what the price was, what had to be done for me..i struggle and am honest about my sin tendencies..but i want to live better today than i did yesterday..and that these things were written for us so that we do not sin! 1 john2:1, but if any man sin..we have have an advocate, 1 john 2:2.

I am glad i am not the only one who believes in biblical holiness here..

Very good advice, it reminds me of this verse...

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

and

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In short - I believe the bible says that holiness is the product of sanctification. Sanctification is a lifelong process whereby we put off the old man and put on Christ. So, repentance and grace are key.
I highly recommend J.I.Packers book, "Rediscovering holiness" - it had a big impact on my life.
While I can almost not wait to be perfected in holiness oneday in heaven, I am(by Gods grace) making an effort now to mortify the flesh so I do not bring Christs name into disrepute.

I believe it is our responsibility to learn and obey the law. This is holiness. Too many Christians seem to all but ignore the law and instead focus on climbing the church social ladder.
