Here's a bit of enlightenment for those Reformed Calvinist in this thread

On several occasions, Calvin, in his devotions, found himself uttering a lingua non nota et cognota mini. That is, the language was not known or understood by him. Himself a skilled linguist, Calvin set about to discover the orthography of the utterance.

Poor guy had no idea he was speaking in tongues.

He was someone who thought it was a good thing to have people killed.

That would have been demonic utterances, not the Holy Spirit since we know he could not have been led by the Holy Spirit since he had people killed and he taught much error.

Hi Bob C.. .. part of what you said is true yet God give many missionaries the ability to speak foreign languages they never spoke. Assemblies of God and so many others through out history. There are so many stories about this. Please no offense but its misleading. The part you just had to put in caps?
I'm not sure if the A/G had formed, but some of the early Pentecostals just assumed they would be able to preach in tongues on the mission field without learning the language. The Bible does not teach that, but some of them believed that. While many tongues at Azusa Street and other Pentecostal meetings were understood by onlookers who spoke those languages, this missions strategy didn't work. But on occasion, someone speaks in tongues and someone who knows the language understands that. Those types of testimonies got reported back in the A/G from time to time.

I repeat: NOBODY Has (in terms of ownership) "gifts of the Spirit". However ANYBODY can be, and are being used in the Spiritual Gifts as the situation demands, and as God wills.

SOME people are used in specific gifts on a regular basis - like Katherine Kuhlman. She would be anxious to the point of physical sickness before her meetings, for fear the the Holy Spirit WOULDN'T show up and heal people, since she was painfully aware that without Him, she was just a spooky old lady with no "power at all".

I have been given the gift of speaking in tongues. I prayed that God would give me that gift when I first believed, and He did!

I have personally known people who had the gift of healing and others who had the gift of prophecy. Anyone who disagrees needs to change to a different church.

29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

What you have is what God intends for you to use for His Will.
