Isn't "theologian" too much of a big word for mere mortals?

The term theologian is a recognition that complex and detailed thought needs dedication
and real study, even to the extent of it being a full time job.

Once you start to see the many layers of issues and understanding needed to walk in
true open fellowship with the Lord, there is respect that is needed to people who partake
in such study.

What you will discover is truth is obvious once laid out but difficult to get to before
someone has opened the door.

It is also why we have pastors and teachers, who equally play this role but to a lesser
extent.

Perfect! Theologians can't be blamed for having a pompous title, and what I am questioning here is the title - not the job of a theologian.

I think you are making a mountain out of an anthill!

anyone can be a Theologian, but to become an expert would more
than likely take a life-time, a true calling or faithful dedication...

I don't think we need to impose other complications on the word 'theology'. Rather, I think if we are coming to recognize our limitations and the greatness of God, it means that we're doing it right. :)
I agree! The term "theologian" is accepted worldwide and theologians are not gonna change it. My intention was just to invite CC members to reflect on the etymology (true meaning) of the word.

Humble theologians will not insist on being referred to with that title - only those who are puffed up will do that.

Short history of the words THEOLOGY and THEOLOGIAN.
· Plato used the term “theology” around 400 BC;
· Origen is credited as the first Christian to use the term “theology”, in his attempt to explain Christianity to non-believers;
· Eusebius used the term to refer exclusively to the study of Christianity – not to pagan “gods”;
· In the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] century, Peter Abelard adopted the term as the title of a book on Christian dogma;
· Around 1350 AD the term entered the English language (when the RCC was dominant).

By questioning the validity of the Title, you are, in fact, questioning the person the Title is bestowed upon, and the "job" they do. Mister is a Title..........Sir is a Title......so many things are Titles that folks never question. I am left to wonder what your "true agenda" is for posing this question?

As well, why should "blame" even enter into the conversation? And who exactly decided that the Title of Theologian was POMPOUS? You? Isn't that POMPOUS of you? Who bestowed the Title of Questioner of Titles upon you?

I don't see the the term theologian as being pompous. It's really no different from the titles doctor of divinity, doctor of pharmacy, etc. It just implies that an individual has completed a certain amount of time systematically studying a certain subject.

Not all Christians have spent equal time studying Scripture, Greek, Hebrew, church history, etc.

Theology means "GODology", and we can't study God - we can only study His word.

we all study our Maker through His Word - we can also study Him through His creations,
for they bear witness of His creative power.
