The best I understand it, the answer is Jacob. God told Jacob that he would be known as Israel, therefore the children of Israel are the descendants of Jacob. Note that that doesn't mean only Jacob's descendants are Hebrew.

[h=1]Israel is Mine! Watchmen, Sound the Trumpet, the Alarm of War!...Says the Lord

11/1/07 From God The Father - A Letter Given to Timothy, For All Those Who Have Ears to Hear
Thus says The Lord God: Weep, O nations! Cry, all peoples! The Lord has lifted up His voice, and His face is set hard against you!...
O mighty and perverse nations, you shall be forsaken and left utterly desolate!... IN RUINS! Says The Lord God of Hosts. No more shall you contend with Me in your uplifting, in your upholding, of all this wickedness!... YOU HAVE FORSAKEN ME! No more shall you stand there before My face, with your noses in the air!

Behold, even My own people go the way of the afflicted of sin,
Following after those desolate of the Spirit
Who remain married to this world...

Yet I shall save them out of all their troubles!
For My own name’s sake will I do it!...

For the sake of Judah, I will cover them;
For the sake of Jacob, I shall hold them in safety;
And for the sake of David, My servant, I shall gather them under My wing.

O city of David, My Jerusalem, give Me glory! For The Lord has seen your travail, for it has come. Yet it shall not stand, for you are Mine... I am married unto you! Vengeance is Mine! Says The Lord. And I, Myself, shall go before you and fight against them!
And those who devise evil against you shall be thrown down! They shall not stand! For they have agreed together as one, and as one shall their agreement be turned into death... The grave shall be their reward! Recompense, in full, shall I give them in My hot displeasure! In My fury I shall destroy them!... Save a sixth part who shall not be counted among the condemned, the punished of My anger, says The Lord.

Beloved of The Shepherd, this you shall see;
Lo, you shall behold it with your own eyes...

And shortly thereafter, you and yours shall be no more in the earth.

Genesis 32:28 And He said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God]; for you have contended and have power with God and with men and have prevailed.

that would be correct.

Exodus 15:22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.

but did Moses lead Jacob/Israel?

Who is Israel??

It depends on the context of what Israel is being talked about. In the Old Testament, after Jacob wrestled with God, his name was changed to Israel. However, throughout the Bible, it is used three different ways: the biological descendants of Abraham (the Jews who believe and those who are just related by blood) and the spiritual descendants of Abraham (Gentiles). In the New Testament, it was never used to refer to the political state like it was in the Old Testament. After the exile of the Jews in 70 A.D., there is not really a pure Jewish blood line either since they married into other races and acculturated to where they were living.
Again, it all depends on the context. (P.S. --the majority of people in Israel today who consider themselves Jews are actually of European descent. Most people in the political state of Israel are actually non-believers and are calling themselves atheist. Interesting insight.)

Good answer. pretty much dead on what I was looking for. Israel has many different meanings yet sometimes when we speak of Israel today we think of the nation and or promised land and not the true meaning of Israel in context.

Israel is the nation of the Jews. Jacob (Israel) had 12 sons and they became the 12 tribes of Israel.

Whoever Israel is, God's curses are yet upon them;

Deut.28
[15] But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
[46] And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.

Let's read some of those curses that are YET on the true Israel;

God said Israel would be a weak nation!

Deut.28:25
[25] thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them:
[44] he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

God said Israel would be borrowers and NOT lenders of money!

Deut.28:44
[44] He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him.

God said Israel would occupy prisons!

Isa.42
[22] But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses

God’s word says that wherever Israel finds herself, in whatever nation, it will not be good for her!

Deut.28
[16] Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
[17] Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.
[18] Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
[19] Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
[20] The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.

God told us these signs would be on the true nation of Israel so that they would be known...not hid!

These curses are yet on the true nation of Israel!

Do those that call themselves Israel have the signs that God said would be upon here and her seed?

Something to think about!

Actually, it is spelt 'Israel' and means 'he will rule as God.'
And 'spelt' is actually "spelled"! Unless you are talking about a hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe for livestock feed! Lol!

there are several definitions for israel...the trouble is that the bible often uses different definitions in different contexts...

genetically israel is the nation descended from abraham's grandson jacob...

where israel is related to salvation...then israel is all of God's people...including gentiles who follow christ...and exclusing genetic israelites who have rejected christ...

I don't think we should be so quick to say we know God's plan for Israelites who have rejected Christ. We cannot know all of God thoughts and plans, and many scriptures point to our just leaving all in God's hands. In Romans 28:28 and 29: Many of the Jews are now enemies of the Good News. But this has been to your benefit, for God has given his gifts to you Gentiles. Yet the Jews are still his chosen people because of his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 29 For God's gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.

if any person rejects christ now...they might someday repent and accept christ...

but the bible does teach clearly that you can only be saved by grace through faith in christ...that means that jews who do not have faith in christ are not saved...and that excludes them from true israel...

they could still repent later on and accept christ...and then they would be grafted back into israel...
