Good point, sister. Between that and my shortcomings, God's Word was not being received, by me anyway.
Ever consider that THAT might have been the entire, and only, message you, personally, were meant to receive from God at that moment?

The main reason I dont wear casual attire to church, is because everyone else is wearing fancy clothes and stuff. And I dont want to feel like the odd one out
Honesty, beyond a doubt.

Something similar but different, I knew of a preacher who really like to dress up. Anyway he was preaching to a group of really poor folks who did not have anything all that nice to wear to church and he was preaching on giving money. Well, the preacher himself said later that as he was preaching the Lord said to him, how can you preach to those people about giving money when you are dressed like that. Utah, if you have the tattoos then don't get any more and for crying out loud, give up the beer, drink tea or soda or whatever...abstain from all appearance of evil.

I tried the Jehovah's Witness church once. I did bible study with one of the seniors, which was nice and helpful. However, his wife said to me once, when I said why do I have to wear a suit to church rather than just my nice jeans and a shirt, 'well Jesus wore the finest linens, and it shows respect for God' (not sure which part of scripture that was).

When I told her, these jeans cost £150, she didn't know what to say. Not all jeans are £5. lol

I think when people go to church and have to wear suits, like the Mormons (also went to their church), it invokes pride. A lot of these people are trying to be the best looking for God, like God really judges people by what they wear? If people trust based on attire, this leaves an open room for wolves in sheep's clothing. This was much more strict with the Mormons though, and it made me think, if I brought a beggar with me to church dressed in rags, would they look down on him or accept him as a human being like we all are?

None of us are more elite than others, in God's eyes.

Now I am wondering... for those who think pastors have to dress up to preach. What do you think of congregants not getting dressed up?

This is beginning to remind me of the church in 1970. Revival broke out. Stoners, prostitutes, the homeless, hippies, and the dregs of the earth were being saved right and left.

And then they entered church for the first time. And terrified the congregants. It really did change everything.

Is it any different today?
I grew up in a church where we dressed up, and the preachers wore suits and ties. Now, this was a little brick church in a poor fishing town. I will say, when revival happened and people came to church in droves (it happened it the 1980s when I was a child, there was not enough seating and people stood up at the back) you could tell who was not a church person and who was- but it didn't matter to the people who were regular members of the church. They were just glad to have so many people there. I remember my mom's cousin's wife (small town, lol) in skin tight jeans and low cut shirt and thinking "That lady does not look good for church." I was a child, and didn't know that she didn't know better.

I was taught that dressing in your best is a sign of respect for God- to take a little extra trouble with your appearance. Like church is worth the effort. Anyway, I believe people with genuine love in their hearts will welcome people no matter how they are dressed.

Lol!! Im getting a bit better as I age. My hubby has helped smooth me out. I joked that it must have been like taming of the shrew when we first met. He laughs as says more like breaking a colt. I smile and let him think he's winning. rofl.

I'm a tattooed beer drinker who is more comfortable in jeans than a suit, and I often wear a nice pair of jeans to worship service.

That said, today there was a young preacher on tv who was wearing what looked like WWII combat fatigues and boots, a wife beater tank top that rode low on his chest, and his shirt was not tucked in but rather hung down from underneath his shredded up jean jacket hoodie.

I couldn't get passed his clothing to listen to his message. 25 years ago he would have been my hero, but today, rather than listening to him, I was struggling with what I saw.

Shame on me!
It is NEVER about the man. It is ALWAYS about the message.

I always listen a little more intently to the ones who dress out of the norm.

The con man is most always in the norm, and makes us comfortable.
