But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
....
Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

(Both from Isaiah)

when I started reading the Bible I began with the Gospels. I read them through two or three times. Then I started on Romans 1. After reading part of it I returned to the Gospels. For a beginner with little background the Bible is not easy. I love Romans now but it was too tough for me to begin with.

If you are having difficulties in the OT begin with Genesis. Then Exodus 1-20. Then the historical books. Read a few Psalms. Psalm 1, 23 and 51 might be good ones to start with. If you are in a Bible teaching church you will meanwhile learn more so that you can tackle the other books. God bless you.

One good way to start is to read through the entire Bible. Get a "panoramic" view. If you wish to start with the New Testament, they say (I don't know who "they" are but I quote them a lot) to read the gospels, then acts, then the universal epistles (James, Peter, John and Jude), then Paul's epistles and then Revelation.

It wasn't Matthew freaking me out it was more of life in general. I've just started taking reading the bible seriously and I'm totally freaked out by god, and everything that comes with it. I'm seriously freaked out by all of my past sins and sometimes it just hits me of how far I've fallen. But on a more positive note Matthew 18:20-35 is one of my favorites so far. I'm sorry for being all over the place my minds just rushing
Look...if you trust Jesus as your savior he places your sins as far as the East is from the WEST and remembers them no more.......Christ died unto sin once and took your sin...every sin you would commit and nailed it to the cross with him and then takes the righteousness of God and imputes it unto you by faith......Paul said forget the past and just keep your eyes on Jesus my friend....you have been rendered legally innocent (justified) in the eyes of God by faith......

Simple story line:

God grooves on us.
We once had it made with Him.
We blew it. (our ancestors did)
We wandered around lost.
He gave us some rules to follow to return home.
We couldn't follow them.
But He already knew that. (As you would with your own kids)
So He provided a very simple way we COULD.
That way was Jesus.
Our part, now, was just to trust Jesus.
We still have a choice.
We can continue to wander.
Or, we can join Jesus' homeward bound train.

Some will, some won't. (It's called stubborn pride...... like a willful kid)

Heaven? Hell? In truth, the Bible tells us very little about either. But we DO know Heaven is desirable, and Hell is not.
If we have decided to trust Jesus, that stuff is a moot point, anyway... just something for us to waste time arguing about.

That's about it.

I'll definitely take a good look at all your suggestions. Should I read individual chapters until I eventually read the entire bible or is it better to read it front to back? Does anyone know the chronology of the books, from earliest to latest? So I can make more sense of it instead of jumping from one time period to another. Thanks so much everyone! I really appriciate every single comment!!
Luke 15:11-32 ESV
11And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to[SUP]b[/SUP] one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
17“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’[SUP]c[/SUP] 22But the father said to his servants,[SUP]d[/SUP] ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
25“Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ 31And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

We were all brand new once. It is good that you are starting to read the Word of God. I would start out by reading the book of John. In that book you will learn that God is Love and that is a good thing to always remember as you get deeper into the Word.

The book of Romans is a good book also as it explains clearly the path to salvation. It is not hard. Jesus loves you and died for your sins. Tell Jesus you are sorry for you past sinful life with a contrite heart, accept the forgiveness that He will offer you and invite Him into your heart. You will be a new creation in Christ.

Welcome to CC.
