I am not going to get into what law here but rather what I have gained from this concept.
I will use two verses one from the new testament and one from the Old. In fact they are both linked thus the reason I will use them specifically.
But before those two texts one other to begin:
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Heb 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
This again is a quote form the Old Testament, but the real issue is this part:
"I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts:"
we are all familiar with this new covenant promise. But what does it mean to have the law on the heart and in the mind? Now there are many theories out there in the Christian church. But for me I need a bible answer not an opinion. So what does the bible say? Does it anywhere speak of this experience in a practical way?
The answer I have found is yes.
Note the words of Paul here for our New Testament text:
Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another
So Paul clashing the Gentiles who did not get given the law with the Jews who did get given the law. While the Jews who did receive the law did not keep it, The Gentiles what did they do?
Notice these words:
" Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts"
"shew" yes practical or practice this is what I wan't to know. So what is it that shows the work of the law written on the heart.
The answer the verse before: "For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law,"
So the practical result of this work of God is that the person or persons who have had this done now naturally do what the law says.
So we see from Paul what it means to have the law written on our hearts.
Take note that no where does the bible say that this means we suddenly know the law without having to study or seek in the word. Its meaning has to do with effect not method. The reason I say this is many have suggested this to me over time.
Paul gets this concept form here:
Eze 36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Here God's new covenant promise is bathed in similar but different imagery, Both are parables of sorts. But the result, the practical result is the same:
"and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them."
this is the same as what Paul said about the Gentiles who do by nature the things in the law.
If you want to know why these are linked outside of the obvious connection, the answer is found in something Paul says also in Romans chapter 2.
But for me this is not mans opinion but the word of God shows that the result of this law being written on the heart is that the law begins to be kept naturally. Thus this is a miracle of God it is good news. Blessings.
