cetainly! the apostles are meeting together to decide what role the law of Moses should play in the gentile believer's life... not how a believer should live... believers are counseled other places to walk by the spirit...

now, I think what James counsels is a way of helping Jews and gentiles be together in the same church... at that time, the church had a lot of people in it who were raised Jewish... today, hardly any... I think Paul later says that eating food sacrificed to idols is no big deal, unless you think there's something behind the statue...

so, if the part in the law of Moses doesn't have to be followed by gentile believers, what about, say, murder?

a christian attempts to walk by the spirit... every thought and attitude can be evaluated, does it help grow the fruit of the spirit, or lead to the works of the flesh... so then, let us walk by the spirit.
In other words, just make up the rules as you go? Jesus Christ is NOT the same yesterday, today and forever?

It's amazing, but sad when I see so many that say (in certain terms) that they are led by the Spirit and the law is written on their hearts but have never taken the time to identfy and confirm that the spirit of persuation is actually God's.

"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." 2 Corinthians 11:14

How does one identify without confirmation by studying all of God's word instead of just part of what they like. A person can't even confirm the truth of the new without the old. That's fact no matter who disagrees. If the shadow vanishes, there is proof that the light and substance that casts the shadow is also gone.

There isn't a difference between when Jesus was alive and after He died as far as God's law goes. Don't you think He would have mentioned something so incredibly huge as, "Hey, I am going to spend my entire life and ministry teaching people how to truly observe the law by the Spirit, but as soon as I die none of what I said will be valid and apply to you any more."?
Actually he said it before he died. See Mt 22:37-40.

It's all very clear and speaks for itself.

well, I meant 'Jews' as 'Jewish humans', and since humans need two parents, it's safe to say each Jewish person today has two parents... each of them had two parents, and so on...
Only one may have been Jewish, and if it weren't the right one, the child is not Jewish.

sure looks like 'fit in' advice to me... James wants the Jewish believers, who are zealous for the law, to see Paul as a law keeper...
Non-responsive. . .

You did not show where James advised Paul on how to "fit in."

now, your other two points, which are both true... I don't see how they relate to Jewish believers and law keeping... clarify, plzzzzz
They relate to the law of Moses in your post.

I don't think we have to speculate too much on the motive behind James' request to Paul. The motive is recorded:

Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. -- Acts 21:24b (NIV)

I don't see anything here about fitting in or about wanting Jewish believers to see Paul as a law keeper when he actually wasn't. Are we to believe that James and Paul were co-conspirators in a very serious public deception?

And what are the reports in which James says there is no truth?

They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. -- Acts 21:21 (NIV)

I'm interested to see the other side of the argument here so that I can broaden my understanding of these verses
.
Well, now that I'm been reminded of the Scriptural location of the incident in question, there are several things to note about it:

First of all, Paul was exercising his principle of Ro 14:1-8--regarding those whose faith was weak in their fondness for the shadows when the substance/reality of the shadows had come--when he did not command that Jews abandon the ceremonial law, including food sacrificed to idols.

Secondly, and most interesting of all, his going to the Temple for the purification rights in order to please the Jews (Ac 21:26) was the very thing that provoked the Jews (vv. 27-28).

And thirdly, when the Christian Jews saw how unbelieving Jews treated Paul (v.27), it helped strengthen their weak faith and separate them from the Law.

Legalism in a sense is 'making oneself appear and look righteous thru man made rules and regulations, which appear outwardly to make one appear righteous.... that is why Jesus Condemned the religious leaders of His day.. all these extra curricular 'burdens'.. to make one look and appear righteous.. yet INWARDLY they were ravening Wolves, full of venom and mischief and wickedness... Jesus attributed them to 'whited washed tombs'.. Today you have so much legalism.. incredible.. each division or sect that has Christ Cut up into their 'way'.. has certain doctrines and rules by which they adhere to .. to make it appear as though they are 'christ-like'.. this is Modern Day Legalists.. strain at a gnat.. yet swallow a camel, Blind guides.. so much of that today.. Do you realize TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS is a GIFT.. the Gift of Righteousness. and that Is a Person. the Person of Christ, God manifest in the flesh... that RIGHTEOUSNESS is IMPUTED.. not earned, not bought, not worked out to make one appear righteous in the sight of others, the Gift of Righteousness is Granted.. Its Granted to those Who are Called by Him.. these He has personally Known since before Dirt and Time were created.. For Christistheendofthelaw for Righteousness to every one that Believeth... Righteousness is IMPUTED.. unto the Soul upon Trusting In Christ and His atoning Work at the tree.. its a Gift.. legalism TRUMPS that.. says we know that.. but we'll add in just alittle more to make it even more Righteous.. thats diabolical and of the devil... the Righteousness God sees.. is the TRUST you have in His Son and what He accomplished for you.. not your own stuff.. which really looks like filthy rags.. even the best gooodest person.. cant MEASURE up to what Christ, God's BEst has accomplished for you.. Christ died for the Sinner, the most vilest of sinners, the good person, and the sins of the world... not enough 'good ' you can do to warrent God turning His head and saying' 'that person is really good. I will impute my Righteousness unto him/her'.. somebody teaching you and preaching THAT to you is in Error.. time to flee that doctrine and put it aside.... Indeed!

Jesus never taught that the laws were done away with. What He is saying is that the greatest law is to love God with all your heart soul and mind. And the second greatest is to love your neighbor as yourself...

Those two things embody the whole of the law... If you obey those two commandments, you will fulfill the rest of the law... Even when it pertains to things God doesn't want us to eat lol. If those were the only two commandments, yet we aren't given any definition of that what that love requires of us, then it would be worthless. Anyone can say "I love God and I love people", they can even have warm fuzzy feelings when they think about God and people... But without action, it isn't really love.

It's like being married to someone and saying you love them but living as a single person and dating and fooling around. Keeping all the money and best things for yourself, not thinking about the other person when you make decisions and so on.

You're wingin' it. . .

Check out when Melchizedek lived.

Check out when the law was given.
Genesis 14
17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand[c] to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”

The Holy Spirit wrote them on my heart before I ever saw the list.
Yet you deny the laws which you have been told by men are obsolete. Almost every Christian I have ever met is living in sin and walking by the flesh. They only care about jobs, money, comfort, the american dream, sinful tv shows, sexually immoral thoughts and worse. I am not saying you fall into this category of fake believers but many would probably say the same thing. So if they are on your heart, why are you opposed to them in God's word?

To me legalism (in this situation) is trying to earn salvation thru perfect obedience, thereby rejecting Christ for your salvation. Or adding to God's laws with man made traditions which are not from God. Jesus did often condemn the pharisees for such things as you can see in the passage about hand washing (which was not a commandment of God). Obeying God's laws is not legalism if done out of love and obedience to Him. I do trust completely in Christ, I also desire to obey Him as He asked us to.

1 John 3
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

You unfortunately are the one who seems to be leaning towards the biggest error in Christianity today. The error that we can continue in sin and still say we are in Christ. Willful habitual sinners who call themselves Christians, those who live by the flesh and do not turn from their sins are not in Christ and most likely are not born again. They are not even to be associated with but removed from the church for both the good of the Body and in the hope that at some point they will actually turn to God.

If you love your parents, you show it by being obedient to them. Same with our Father and Christ.

Careful Enoch. or whoever you may be. The Law is good .. .buts its made for these------> Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, You live by the LAW you will be judged by the Law.. Christ is the End of the Law for those who Truly Believe .. you sound like a modern day Pharisee... accusing me of 'sin'.. sorry... You sound just like the Pharisee's of Jesus's Day.. you want to be justified by the Law.. you go right ahead. that puts you into the category of the above from Scripture.. to be justified by the Law and to be following Christ. dont work together. One has already fulfilled It.. those who are His Elect. Know they are Justified by Faith in His completed work of Calvary. indeed.. You neither know me Enoch nor do you Know My Father in Heaven.. but carry on wayward son. carry on! To God be the Glory.. Jesus the Christ, ! God manifest in the flesh! lolz

the Law is still there. but those who are Genuinely Redeemed 'know' that Christ Himself has 'fulfilled' what had to be done for Them.. if your His elect You will understand this.. the Law is there. today but its not for the RIGHTEOUS... those who are Truly Righteous In the Father's Eye's are those who Trust in His Son's completed Work on the bloody Tree.. IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS.. by Faith and Thru Faith. no other WAY and Faith is a Gift from God.. leaving out the POSSIBLITY of man thumpin his/her chest.. saying "im good enough and warrant God's Grace and Im Righteous'.. thats DANGEROUS ground for those who Claim to be christian... dangerous... holding out the Truth in Un Righteousness... the Law was brought forth to reveal 'sin'.. and the Law was the taskmaster to Bring a person to Christ.. who has fulfilled It all... now if you claim to be christian and are trying to fulfill what Christ has already DONE.. then ye tread the blood of Jesus all over again.. saying'. I know you fulfilled it LORD, but I'll try my hardest just to make sure your's is really what it says it is'.. MANY work or ponder that in their hearts today. God knows your heart and He knows if ye Truly Trust in His Son's completed Work.. its by Grace ye are Saved.. thru Faith.., that not of yourselves... indeed... way too many 'jesus's' out there today. Christ is not divided... btw.. 'he that suffereth in the flesh, hath ceased from Sin'... I Today "know ' what that is like. and to experience that.. as Peter told the Elect of God in his writings.. 'arm yourselves'.... and I have Armed myself.. and the Father knows that... and so does My Redeemer, Yeshua Christos, God manifest in the flesh..

No, I don't want to be justified by the law. If you want to know a decent (though a bit extreme) comparison of the pharisees of Jesus day and the a modern day equivalent, I would say a Catholic priest. Just about everything they believe and observe and teach is based on their traditions, not God's word. Jesus didn't condemn the pharisees for observing God's laws.

I didn't say you were in sin. I said your theology seems to be leaning towards the error that those in Christ continue in sin (or can continue in sin).
We have one of two possible fathers, God or the devil. If we are obedient to God it is because He is our father, if we are obedient to the devil it is because he is our father. There are no bad trees which bear good fruit or good trees which bear bad fruit. In this way, it is plainly evident who a person serves.

If we are justified by faith then our actions will reflect it. If someone says they are in Christ but continue to live in sin they are a liar.

1 John 2
2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

And how did Jesus walk? In love and obedience to the Father. Observing and teaching His good and perfect laws, not seeking Himself but the Kingdom of God for the glory of our Father. He served others in His words and deeds and kept Himself from sin. This is how Paul says we should walk as well
