Mat 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
Mat 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
Mat 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
Mat 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Mat 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Mat 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
Mat 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
Mat 17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
Mat 17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

Jesus took the three up a mountain, and there appeared Moses and Elias, and they talked with Jesus. Both Moses and Elias lived many years before this three disciples. How did they know it was Moses and Elias? Maybe Jesus called or greeted them by name. But in what shape did they appear? In the same bodily shape they had when they were living on earth? The Bible does not say they were also in a figure that had a face that did shine as the sun. They did not walk up the mountain, and while Peter spoke a bright cloud overshadowed them, and they fell on their face, when they heard God speak. When they lifted up their eyes they saw no man. So Moses and Elias went as they came. Like ghosts?
What shape or body was Elias and Moses clothed with. Were they still in their flesh?
There is one verse in the Bible that says God can even PRESERVE our bodies, until Jesus returns. 1Th_5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Were Moses and Elias clothed in blameless bodies, blameless spirits and blameless souls? Or did they have the same body Jesus had AFTER He was resurrected? One that Mary was not allowed to touch, before He went to the Father? This body of Jesus could move through walls. It also disappeared from peoples presence. Like the wind? When Jesus said everyone born of the Spirit will be like the wind, Is it this sudden disappearance of the body that makes it like the wind? Philip also disappeared from the Enoch. Jesus from the Emmaus men, and here Moses and Elias appeared and disappeared, and they were supposed to be dead!
I know all things are possible for God, but God gave us this so we can understand that a transformed man of God is NOT a normal man. God says when HIS Spirit comes into a man, that Spirit quickeneth the body... Joh_5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
Then Jesus says this..... Joh_6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:... This means the flesh will not gain everlasting life, but that it can gain unto the coming of the son, THEN it will be replaced by the body that we will clothe forever.

Considering that they saw Jesus in a transfigured state, I might imagine that it's possible they just "knew" this was Moses and Elijah. I wonder if they were the actual men and consciousnesses of them, or if they were just some kind of vision illustration. I eventually decided either should suffice because...

For me, the important part of it is how the disciples come to understand that Moses and Elijah "talking with Him" is that they are "within Him", that is, He has the Spirit of Moses and Elijah. First they "saw", but when they "lifted their eyes", they saw "only Him." The way John TB is alluded to as Elijah, Jesus to "son of David", etc.

If Moses represents the law and Elijah the prophets, then this is reiterated in His statement that He fulfilled them both, i.e. became them both in the flesh.

Peace.

Another thing to concider, Jesus said they should not talk about what they saw until He has risen from the dead! And Jesus did have other "capabilities" AFTER he had risen. It was like Jesus was even more a miricle Man AFTER His resurrection. And this is where I think we should get too, right here on earth. If Jesus was the FIRSTBORN, It was not until HIS death and resurrection, that God raised the DEAD! But God does not raise the SAME MAN.

When we die spiritually, God does not blow life into the old man, God give birth to the NEW MAN, and this NEW MAN is born in the image of Jesus Christ, but is it Jesus before or after resurrection? Like you noted, only the NEW MAN is IN Christ. But the risen Jesus was different than the dieing Jesus. Jesus said to the Father.... Father glorify thy Son with the glory He had BEFORE he was man.

The NEW SPIRIT in us has a grade of glory to the level of Jesus. And that glory is amazing in power and holiness. The power is Godly power, and that power can do this.... When they stoned Stephen this happened...
Act_6:15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

Wolfinoxhide what is the difference between the face of Stephen and the face of an angel?

Jesus said this to Mary.... Joh_20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
In this verse I get the notion that Jesus was going to Father, before He would meet up with the brethren. Because when He came back, He said to Thomas... Joh_20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

What flesh goes through walls? Walk on water also appears and disappears, and eats food to prove it is not Spirit. Is that the form we take on when we are REBORN, or BORN of GOD? Is that the glorification of HIS chosen people. The image of His Son!

What we must look at though is the purpose for the transfiguration and why Moses and Elijah appeared.
Mark 9:1-4 KJV
(1) And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
(2) And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
(3) And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
(4) And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

What the 3 disciples seen was a type of the 2nd coming of Christ with Moses representing those who will be resurrected while Elijah represented those who will be alive when Jesus returns.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV

(16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
(17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Moses and Elijah, according to the liturgical verses, are not only the greatest figures of the Old Testament who now come to worship the Son of God in glory, they also are not merely two of the holy men to whom God has revealed himself in the prefigurative theophanies of the Old Covenant of Israel. These two figures actually stand for the Old Testament itself: Moses for the Law and Elijah for the Prophets . And Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Mt 5:17).

They also stand for the living and dead , for Moses died and his burial place is known, while Elijah was taken alive into heaven in order to appear again to announce the time of God’s salvation in Christ the Messiah. Thus, in appearing with Jesus on the mount of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah show that the Messiah Saviour is here, and that he is the Son of God to whom the Father himself bears witness, the Lord of all creation, of the Old and New Testaments, of the living and the dead. The Transfiguration of Christ in itself is the fulfillment of all of the theophanies and manifestations of God, a fulfillment made perfect and complete in the person of Christ. The Transfiguration of Christ reveals to us our ultimate destiny as Christians, the ultimate destiny of all men and all creation to be transformed and glorified by the majestic splendor of God himself.

Certainly.

I believe there's more detail about the concept of the transfiguration reiterated in Rev 10 and 11.
Centered on "...and those who worship within..."

for Moses died and his burial place is known
Typo? "UN-known" ?

what is the difference between the face of Stephen and the face of an angel?
Face: "intent"
( Countenance: "mood" )
Angel: "messenger"

I believe the council (not the accusers) overall impression of Stephen was that the manner in which he was working (his "face" or "intent") was reflective of someone genuinely concerned with "letting his light shine", more than anything in line with the accusations. Same scene being painted as that when Jesus came before Pilate who found no fault with him. In his "face", trial, final words and death, Stephen had truly "followed the Lamb wherever it goes"
