People Don't Know Their Bible

A survey of churchgoing people revealed the following:

• The most widely known Bible verse among adults and teens is “God helps those who help themselves”—which is not actually in the Bible and even conflicts with the basic message of Scripture.
• One-third could not put the following in order: Abraham, the Old Testament prophets, the death of Christ, and Pentecost.
• Half could not sequence the following: Moses in Egypt, Isaac’s birth, Saul’s death, and Judah’s exile.
• One-third could not identify Matthew as an apostle, from a list of New Testament names.
• When asked to locate the biblical book supplying a given story, one-third could not find Paul’s travels in Acts, half did not know that Jesus’ birth was in Matthew, half did not know that the Passover story was in Exodus.

I am from africa and come into contact with people that cannot read or write , don't know what a Bible look like , never heard any of the name you called there but are living so close to God that they "touch" Him everyday. Are you then saying that since Christ died on the cross for all sinners and rose again as the perfect sacrifice that we all can throw away our bibles be cause the Spirit will see that we all get to Heaven.

Something like that. Your own bible tells you that you cannot find eternal life in it. It is great for learning about God, but eternal life is in a person.

You have to remember that most Christians say they don't really need the bible... they just tap into the spirit and have a direct line to revelation!

No wonder no one knows the bible.

Peace be with you, since fair enough there are believers who are unable to read but worship in spirit and one has discovered their weakness. Then what must that one who can read in compassion do?
Don't that one is compelled to go and share the Word to the uneducated?
Jesus was right that in the last days love will grow cold, you do your thing and i do my thing. The oneness is dying.

The Words of Eternal Life from LORD JESUS CHRIST, clearly feeds us believers that we must as true worshipers, posses 'spirit' and 'truth', in order to Truly Worship the FATHER who is SPIRIT.
Today many people love to give themselves Heavenly spiritual names but it is evidence that they are still far away from HEAVEN in their confessions, especially sir 'SpiritofFire' who justifies in his word and not the Holy Scripture, saying you cannot find eternal life in the Bible, the one who has outwardly put the HOLY SPIRIT in front of his name and yet inwardly he manifest to be ahead of the HOLY SPIRIT of the Holy Scripture.
Sorry to say, the truth is he is in blind faith, with another Jesus and another spirit in him, deceiving others who are weak in the Holy Scripture, with a lie.
The Word of the FATHER in the teachings of JESUS in the New Testament are spirit and life, the Words of Eternal Life.
The HOLY SPIRIT our Teacher of HIS inspired Holy Scriptures has helped us to distinguish the spirit of error (anti-CHRIST)
The ones who disagrees with this, fall together with the numbers of people mentioned in Hosea 4;6.
May GOD the FATHER of our LORD JESUS CHRIST have mercy and draw the guilty ones into repentance and help them in spirit and truth.

The word of God is an important part of being a christian, if used correctly and with the right heart you can know God on a deeper level than if you had been taught by a mature christian. The word of God is amazing and while it is true that many do not know it full(such as me) I cannot say the I do not need the bible, why else would the lord had made it? People who hide behind their cruel words and claim their quarrel is with The Lord, that is not only loathsome but very dangerous. Just because you quote scripture doesn't excuse your malious intent. I think JesusChica looks quite pretty.

Something like that. Your own bible tells you that you cannot find eternal life in it. It is great for learning about God, but eternal life is in a person.

This is not the case of the majority of people. The Bible is God's written words. Without it. Like the original post states Hosea 4:6. It is not a good outcome .

fredjames made a good point, we should be reaching out to people who are in need. If they can't read , they should be read to; or taught to read.

In the Bible we learn of Christ, who does give Eternal life. Christ is the living word, he walked among us, and he taught the Word. That word is with us to this day. Christ Himself stated, that God's word is a witness to Him. And that man does not live by bread alone, but by every, word that comes out of God's mouth.

I comment because, I see a growing trend, that thinks its okay, to neglect God's written words; and teach people do to do that also...

It's good to say the Holy Spirit Guides us, but its a bad Idea to think the Holy Spirit would approve of neglecting the Word of God which Christ taught.. That's whats I see a lot of people saying.

I believe this is true! I go to a very educated church, where everyone has Bibles, in Canada. We had a pastor fill in one Sunday, and he was giving out treats for people who could answer those type of Bible questions. He started with easier questions, but limited them to the younger children. When he got into harder questions, I was the only one answering. True, I studied the Bible in Seminary. But the more than 30 times I have read through the Bible and studied it have given me a better knowledge, than those who rarely pick it up or systematically study the Bible.

I once considered tutoring those who could not read, because I was a teacher for many years. I feel God blocked me from doing that. I am going to pray again about tutoring. I have the tools leftover from my teaching days and the skills to do it. If the goal was to read the Bible, it would be inspiring to do!

wow...someone OBVIOUSLY doesn't know me...but this doesn't surprise me. I was simply asking for a source where he was getting his information so I can post it to my Facebook for other Christians to see. Please, don't take me for a ditzy woman...because...I'm NOT! I'm smarter than what you make me and I will NOT be mocked for my appearance. I was raised in the church and I work hard at a Christian University.
