Jesus spent a lot of time addressing their beliefs.

Who were the Pharisees?

When did they first appear?

What was their authority?

What happened to them?

I would appreciate any information that you may have. I know that there is Google and other search engines. Done that already. I'm interested in what Christians can tell me.

Basically, they were pretty upstanding citizens, but like much of the Self-Righteous church today, they caught a bad case of "it is just mine what don't stink!"

Im not sure of all the answers to the questions, and may be wrong on this but I uderstand that the Pharisees first appeared
during the Hasmonian period a few hundred years before Christ. They were the main religious group and one of their functions during the time of Jesus was to form part of the Sanhedrin which was the ruling Jewish authority headed by the high Priest and members of the Sadducee's. They believed in both the written and what they called the Oral Law of Moses which contained many additional laws some of which were condemned by Jesus. Modern Judaism is a directly descended from the them and many of the laws and regulations are still adhered to in the form of the Talmud
