My boy went to grade 1 yesterday and all the parents and kids assembled for a meeting before going to their classes. They opened the assembly with a short “biblical” message and a prayer but what really rubbed me up the wrong way was the fact that the preacher talked to us for about ten minutes without reading one passage from the Bible. He did mention Paul and Mark (I think) but never once did he read the Bible. Talked to us about kites and then a short prayer. How can you as a Bible believing follower of God open an assembly in a Godley manner without even reading the Bible?

Am I over reacting or am I missing something?

You're overreacting. Lighten up. It was a ten-minute welcome message.

perhaps being 'politically correct' these days takes precedence
over brief Holy Words.

Was this at a public school or a private Christian school?

What boggles my mind is that it is a Christian school, so political correct would have been to address the Bible.

I know it sound silly but I can’t read my child Huckleberry Finn for a Bible bed time story, just my opinion anyway.

It is an Afrikaans public school with a Christian foundation. Traditionally the Afrikaans schools are predominantly Christian here in SA. Even if you look at the school's policies you can see that they are based on Christian morals.

My question is does the Bible need to be read to speak God's word? You are looking at this in a traditional manner accordign to what you believe. So i say you are big time over reacting.

Must be a sign of the times. Yes it would have been appropriate to read a passage from the bible.
