My Pastor uses the NIV for preaching and teaching.

I use the HCSB.

Should I switch to the NIV to be in line with his preaching and teaching?

Your opinions?

Thanks,
Rob

you will get a largely diverse group of answers and opinions on that. My advice don't seek answers from us seek it from God, if you go to that special quite place with him your heart will tell you the answer as God speaks through the heart the most

read what you want. Read several versions as well, translation is never 100% perfect despite what some people will claim.

if what's being preached depended on what translation was being taught from, you'd be better off thinking of finding a different pastor! ;)

both the HCSB and NIV are fairly literal renderings into the English language. i believe one should be wary of paraphrase bibles - because they aren't translating scripture, but giving one man's interpretation and presenting it as though it was scripture. but any English language version that's faithful to what's written in the original texts shouldn't be a problem.

wherever there seem to be differences, try to find out what the underlying Greek or Hebrew actually says -- that's the authority. there are a number of people here on the forum who understand these languages and who can help you, if you make a thread here to ask about it. there are always going to be difficulties converting thoughts from one language to another, but those shouldn't change the message of the gospel.

Not at all. In fact, as I often say here, I think you will grasp an even better understanding of Scripture if you hear, read, and study it in no less than five (maybe even 7 to 10) different "versions."

I think it is great to have a different version from your pastor. Because then you hear alternative words, phrases, and you can go and dig deeper into it, if you want.

I use ESV for devotions, but in church I use my Ipad. That means I have access to many versions, and I usually look up things in the Greek or Hebrew versions to see what they say. I also read the passages in French and German, just to practice the languages and hear God's Word in them.

I have read pretty much all the modern versions, including the paraphrases. I would stay away from those till you know the bible really well. That way, when you come across something that doesn't seem to work, you can go look it up in a word for word translation.

My Inner Lynnie (the emotional, immature side of me) wants to say Yes, but only because we knew the guy who did the translation work to contribute to the NIV. (He did Jude and a few Psalms, and just that much work took decades of his life.)

But, nah! Not really. Doesn't your church have some Bible lying around that you can use during service, if the two versions differ enough to drive you nuts as you read along? If so, use one of them. Or, just listen to what he reads. It's not like there's some special law that says we have to open our Bibles just because the pastor says, "Open your Bible to..." That's usually just a phrase used to get everyone to pay attention to what's coming next.

I'd like to afford every Bible version available, but a waste of money, even if I could. It's not like I don't have the My Bible (the one I use the most often), and, we really do have a few other versions lying around the house, but they're just collecting dust.

Use what you have, unless there is a reasonable reason you feel a need to get a new Bible. (Which does happen, considering I can't touch my original Bible or it will fall apart. Can't throw it out either, because Inner Lynnie wouldn't like that. lol)

I use the NLT version. I have no idea what my pastor uses. I don't really focus on that aspect, but more so the message and if it lines up with Scripture correctly.

King James Onlyists love the KJV, of course, but of all the translations they hate, they hate the NIV the most. Research that, & you'll find the reason why.

I did this once as a babe and newbie in church. He told me what Bible version he used and I went out and bought one just like it. It took 2 years and the grace of a very old wise pastor to get all the false stuff I had learned.

It was a KJV version of the Dake Bible!

Thank goodness for the grace of wise old pastors.

Hope he doesn't allow folks to call him pastor or he demands tithes. If so, he's not so wise.

Jeremiah 18:18 Then said they, come, and let us devise devises against Jeremiah; ......... Come, and let us smite him with the tongue , and let us not give heed to any of his words.
