notice the verse before this:

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

this is the Gospel. but how can we be cleansed if we say we have not sin? thus the verse you asked about.

How can we be cleansed if we say we have no sin?

John repeats the same sentiment in the next verse:

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

This verse is similar to verse 7. notice we "if we confess" you can't confess sins if you think and say you have no sin thus no forgiveness and no cleansing.

And again the next verse is similar to verse 8:

1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

so note, verse 7 and 9 go together and verse 8 and 10 go together. John is not suggesting that one will never or could never be without sin. but rather that in order for one to come to Christ and Receive forgiveness and cleansing we must confess and admit we are sinners in need of cleansing. Those who do not can not be cleansed/cleaned of their sin.

John makes it clear that sin stops in later chapters as he moves into what it means to be cleansed after confession and humbling ones self.

1Jn 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Hope this helps,

Blessings.
This is exactly right.

1Joh 1:8 is used by many people to upohold the notion of "sin you will and sin you must" when that verse s simply alluding to genuine repentance and coming clean with God.

It is through a genuine repentance that the rebellion to God ceases once and for all.

Does this bother anyone else?

You will hear from the pulpit that we should live holy lives because of the Grace given us through Christ. we here that we should turn from our sins.

Yet you will also hear "we will never stop sinning till Jesus comes or till after death or some such thing".

Does it strike anyone else that if it is impossible to stop sinning then it is pointless telling people to stop or to be holy etc.

or what about this:

you will always sin yet you are a new creature in Christ.

Really? if I am still a sinner after Christ then what has changed? what is new about it?

lets say I stop some of my sins, why not all? is there only enough power for some?

Or is it just possible that God actually made a way for us to stop sinning through Christ?

thoughts to ponder be interested to see your views backed of course by the word of God.
The false teachers pretty much all believe in some from of the doctrine of Original Sin. Thus sin is recognised by these people as a "birth issue" as opposed to an "issue of rebellion." If we are "born sinners" then that means sinning is involuntary which in turn upholds the notion that humans lack the ability to refrain from sin and obey God.

Under that deception theological doctrines are developed which uphold "sinning in salvation" and we end up with the mess that we have today.

Thank brother.

My conclusion is:

1. God forgive our sin if we confess.
2. It doesn't mean after that we guaranty not make another new sin. And if so than we confess our new sin and ask for His forgiveness

How about this simple truth....
1. The spirit that is born of God is sinless, does not sin, is eternally secure in Christ and is eternally sealed to the kingdom of God.
2. The body is dead because of sin, is not subject unto the word of God and neither in deed can be.
3. These two are contrary one to the other and the battle ground is the mind which can be transformed by a study of the word which will allow one to surrender more to the spirit...

The spirit is in deed willing, but the flesh is weak.

Choose you this day whom you will serve!

All we have to do is go by what the Apostle Paul said, and he not once said that sin can not be imputed on a believer again as some try to make it out to be.
As a matter of fact he even warns Timothy in 1 Timothy to not be a partaker in other peoples sins, making himself impure again do to sin. How can a believer such as Timothy become impure from sin again if sin can not be imputed on a believer again ? That would be a wasted warning to Timothy from Paul if that can not happen.

As you learn and grow greater in your love for God, doesn't your tendency to sin become less?

Doesn't your disgust for sin grow?

I haven't quit sinning, nor do I see a day on this side of eternity when I - or anyone, for that matter - will quit sinning, but my desire to please God and do more good(fruits) has grown. Focusing on pleasing/loving God and producing those fruits leaves less time to sin.

:)

This is correct as we are to grow in Christ with the Holy Spirit guiding and helping us in these areas.
We may not become 100% sin free in the flesh, but that does not mean we are not to try to eliminate all sin from our life. Even Paul gave warnings about continuing in willful unrepented or confessed sins, and he even warned Timothy about becoming impure to sin again. A believer getting warned by another believer about sin making them impure again should be enough for anybody to realize that they need to confess their sins for forgiveness. (1 John)

Ephesians 5:5
For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

There are Christians out there who actually believe they have stopped sinning completely, and profess to be living completely sinless lives. I've only met them online though, and after a few discussions with them, I now tend to avoid them if I can.

Tons of them on here unfortunately.

The notion of stop sinning would depend on one's view of the concept of sin. If its viewed as mere external matters only, then, it's quiet possible to "stop sinning" even for the unregenerate. But this is a flawed and shallow sin concept. One that the pharisees had and for which Jesus rebuked them. However a more consistent biblical view of sin makes it another issue altogether, since sin is basically the transgression of God's law and God's law does require absolute perfection and a holiness that equals His very own. Having understood this correctly, we ought to understand the matter in the light of faith. That is faith in the Savior and in the gospel. In this light its less a matter about being always absolute literally perfect as God is perfect and more about faith in that God does help those of His children who call out to Him for forgiveness, restoration, healing and deliverance. It is a matter of belief in the Son of God as the ONLY remedy for our sin or disbelief in same, even if one is being ever so zealous trying to establish one's own righteousness by self-willed efforts of law-keeping. This is the way to keep off from sin. Focusing on Christ and the gospel.
