"But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

you mean as far as still ALIVE? flesh/bone? no... but Soon he will be reunited with his flesh/bone, when Mortality puts on Immortality, at the Call from His Master to come forth, where ever his bones are today, where ever he was buried, God will unite his flesh/bone with his spirit /soul.. only this body which was sown in corruption, shall be Raised in Incorruption, (spiritual body) Immortal, as Christ's body was raised from the Dead.. thats the Promise to all His Firstborn, Christ the Firstfruit unto the Father, and those who are His at His Coming... His Elect, are the Firstfruits, well what do you mean? lolz.. Firstfruit ???from the 'dead', new --->IN CORRUPTIBLE BODIES-Immortal, ---->new spiritual bodies, the 2nd Death has no POWER over these bodies! indeed! that which is sown the natural body, physical death into the ground, is RAISED into a Spiritual body, supernatural, like the Angels of heaven, indeed!

Natural body is sown in corruption, it is RAISED in Glory, to in-corruption, immortality, a spiritual body, supernatural
these, His Own, those He has known since the foundation of the world! the 2nd death has no power over them

the wicked , spiritually dead in trespasses, sins, who physically died without Redemption, 'RAISED' from the dead, flesh, bone reunited with the wicked departed spirit and soul that was 'in torment in Hades, these wicked in their sinful flesh/bone will be 'RESURRECTED' to stand before their Judge, Christ, at the GWTJ, to be judged out of the books, * notice God even Resurrects the damned to be judged, He is Sovereign and In 100% Control! the natural 'wicked' is Resurrected to its 'natural state ' again.. God is ABLE... to be Judged, then the natural wicked state (flesh/bone) is PLACED in Gehenna fire, a fire that burns, yet does not consume you. eternal torment, Many will say that is NOT FAIR, God is NOT FAIR.. oh yes He is.. because man is not God, and because God was Gracious enough and Merciful Enough to Send His Son , so that you could Trust in His completed Work at the Tree, God didnt HAVE TO DO THAT.. Have God taste Physical Death for every human being that ever existed, but He Did, for God is love, and one would not be 'loving' if one did not warn of the impending Judgment that comes from Rebellion God does NOT CHANGE.. indeed!

He returned to John by Revelation....

Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

That apostle wrote that passage, John 21:23-24 (KJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
[SUP]24 [/SUP] This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

Before he died around 100AD (according to tradition and Justin Martyr and several early Church scholars) he clarified that rumor in those verses. He wrote that Jesus did not declare that he would not die until Jesus' return.

What Jesus was teaching Peter is YOU follow, leave others to follow by their own decision. After all, John was behind Peter following, both men not knowing whether it meant their own soon deaths for being found following Jesus again. IOW, don't ask about whether someone over there will die following.

We have heard that john was the beloved disciple but there were likely a few beloved disciples actually and also people at that time shared names rather commonly. You had Simon called Peter and actual Peter. You had James and james a brother. So I feel there were many who carried Christianity forward and not just those that were popular or recognized such as Paul.

If the father offered eternal life then its at least plausible that a disciple could live until the current age. If the Son rose and came to show himself not only once but twice why could not a disciple be graced in a similar way. So many wonders of God...

Jesus has not yet returned - wincam
You misunderstand. The verse is dismissing the implication of John remaining: "Jesus did not say that he (John) would not die(...)."
