Jesus said "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you that you that you may be sons of your Father in heaven" (Matt 5:44,45) and that we should "turn the other cheek" (Matt 5:39, Luke 6:29). With these verses in mind, is there ever a time when a Christian should take up violence whether in the name of God or for one's country?
Well Jesus made a wip and swat it at folks leaving a welt, I don't think he made the cord for show he used it.

At the second coming of Christ, He comes in flaming fire to take vengeance of His enemies and the enemies of His people.
Indeed there will be no mercy, and with a violence that this world has never seen before. nukes is child's play.

A Christian should never engage in physical violence..
That may not always be the righteous thing to do. If an evildoer seeks to harm you or those you love, you must protect them by any and all means. Police are also there to protect and serve, and sometimes it means using lethal violence. If a rabid dog was threatening to bite your child, what would you do?

David knew God as well or better than most of us. Do you think if you lived in his kingdom you could have registered as a conscientious objector? God people should fit into the real world. Self-defence is just common sense.

A Christian should never engage in physical violence..
If my wife and kids were in danger and physical violence was the only option I would be violent.

I would protect them with all my might.

Ecclesiastes 3:3 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

Psalm 82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. 4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

To deny the possible need for violence is to deny that our Father in heaven said there is sometimes a need for it... and if we are not prepared to commit ourselves to violence for a defence of the innocent... we will only be the victims of aggressors.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

That doesn't mean to say, "If you're going to kill my friends, just kill me first... and no worries, I won't fight back."

There is a season for ALL things under heaven... sometimes it means fighting for a righteous cause... like protecting people or yourself.

My wife and I went out for a meal once.

As we were walking down high street there was a couple of guys beating up a guy.
My instinct took over,

They were kicking the crap out of this guy and he was pleading "Please stop"

I stepped in, said to my wife I'm going in when I do get this guy out.

I was crapping myself but I was gonna defend this guy.

So I stepped in, they said "We are going to beat the shit out of you"

I said "ok let's go for it"

They threatened, talked the talk.

Whilst doing so my wife was able to take the beaten up guy away.

Those two guys run away when I stood up to them. No violence needed.

But I was willing to get into a fight.

Lactantius (writing between AD 304 - AD313) "The Christian does injury to no one. He does not desire the property of others. In fact, he does not even defend his own property if it is taken from him by violence. For he knows how to patiently bear and injury inflicted upon him...We do not resist those who injure us, for we must yield to them...When provoked by injury, if he returns violence to his assailant, he is defeated."
We are justified in running though. Hiding, taking our family and going someplace else. Resisting evil, avoiding evil, is not wicked IMO.

You could have just said "Good luck". But you didn't, as it is written; "No greater love".

the real 'test' will always be if we are truly 'listening to The Holy Spirit' when
the times come - you will know by your actions...

never in the name of Jesus.

yes for ones country, Romans 13.

yes for the defense of ones life, but not for their pride.

you can't separate Jesus from God, a true Christian will hopefully 'only' defend in Christ's/God's Name,
being led by The Holy Spirit - it's very clear in the scriptures that we are NOT to use un-necessary force
when defending ourselves and our family, and others...but we will always step-up
when/where The Holy Spirit leads us...
