John 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(borrowing from Gill’s Exposition)
The Comforter Jesus promised (being the Holy Spirit) acts as our “advocate,” our “patron,” to plead our cause before the world. Jesus promised that the Comforter would speak for us when we are brought before the principalities of this world, and would convince the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He is also our “Comforter.” In times of conflict, turmoil, trials, suffering, and sorrow, He is there to comfort us, to strengthen us, and to guide us. This Scripture distinctly reveals that the Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity, who is by nature holy, equally with the Father and the Son, and the author of holiness in the saints.
Scriptures in Chapter 15, and 16 show that both the Father and the Son send the Holy Spirit, being stated that the Spirit would be sent in the Name of the Son to act in His stead both as advocate and comforter for the glory of the Name of the Son Jesus the Christ. This does not make one “lesser” than the other, rather it denotes the agreement of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit in all of this.
The main purpose of the Spirit is to act as Teacher and Interpreter, so we are able to understand the Gospel (teachings) of Jesus Christ. Revealing to us God’s salvation plan so that we can better teach others.
The Scripture also reveals how the Holy Spirit was able to “bring to mind” to the writers of Scripture what they may have forgotten with the passing of time. Enabling them to record the events of the Ministry of Jesus Christ, and in minute detail, His teachings, sermons and other acts. Giving foundation and witness to all Scripture being God breathed.
In closing, I want to add that it is of vital importance that we, as believers, recognize and profess the Holy Spirit. Jesus made this clear in His Gospel.
Matthew 12:31) Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32) And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
