On a separate thread, a while ago, I typed a question to you that really struck a deep chord within me. It was a question of great perplexity, especially considering your own use of Yahweh, an obvious strong hold to Old Testament Law, and a comment made about Hebrew being the pure language of our eternal future. But, after typing it all out, I erased it and decided not to post it. I did this because I didn't want to accuse, attack, or bring about something that didn't really have to be said.

But...

My understanding is that "Avinu" means "Our Father" which of course is the language used by the Lord Jesus Christ in His prayer. You cite this well in your translation. Now...I would never use "Jesus" as my christian chat handle. I would never use "God" as my christian chat handle. I...

So, I can scroll through this exact thread and see others typing a response and addressing YOU as "avinu". So with all that reverential fear of God you're claiming you have, you've actually called yourself "our father" while simultaneously creating scenarios where others will do the same?

Take what you will from this, but I felt the need to address this here as it was mere days early where I exited my browser saying, "I don't need to go here." But you've brought this up, so I'll expect a response. And, as I do not know Hebrew, I admit that I may very well be wrong about "Avinu" in which I apologize.
greatblue, I am in full agreeance with you. When I signed on here, and gave my self that 'avatar name' I wasn't thinking about people addressing me with it. And it has made me uncomfortable since. I don't like it, I don't know how to change the name. If you do or someone else does, I would change it in a heart beat. No you're right, Avinu means 'Our Father' So yes when people address me it gives me a cringe. But I've never been able to figure out how to change it. Thank you for addressing the matter.

[QUOTEI do have to applaud you though for being able to speak Hebrew, which is something I will probably never get around to accomplishing, mostly because of the alphabet.

The genders shouldn't be a problem for me (both German and Latin are full of genders). I'm assuming that in Hebrew the form of the word changes when you go from singular to plural?

How do I do that, forgive my lack of knowledge, but how do I?

Yes, for instance, girl is (to spell in english) Yeldah, girls is yelidote, it gets worse with some other stuff. You can have 4 different spellings for one thing because it has both masculine and feminine form. It'll twist your brain for a minute, but once it clicks, it's no big deal anymore. lol

Thank you, I sent him a message, so hopefully they can let me change it. That would be great, now I need to think of something else. Thanks again my friend.

Ah, Latin does that as well. Singular girl is Puella and plural is Puellae, and it gets much worse once you get to words in the 3rd declension. All the verbs have four forms like with facio (to do, to make) where you have facio, facere, feci, factum. Can't say I'd be too excited to have to learn declensions again.

I don't really think it was me addressing it, but I'm glad you are not offended. As I said, it was another thread and I started to type in response, "Avinu, I don't quite..."...I am sure you can get the gist of it. And then I was really prompted to stop and look up "Avinu" something didn't feel right to me. After I read its meaning, I realized I could not address you as such, and I typed a whole paragraph on why I thought it was wrong. But after doing that, I realized I was not operating out of love, so I decided to erase it. Actually, I ended up abandoning the entire post because of it. And I'm sorry if some of my pride snuck through in the one I posted here, which I do feel it did.

So I look at it this way. If your conscience is unsettled by it, then it will be a good change for the _________________ posts of the future. And, while I don't ever want to claim something I shouldn't, I am grateful that I was able to be part of a process that eases one of the concerns you were carrying.

Blessings to you Friend.

It's not that bad once the grammar and declensions have been learned, and if you study Greek the grammar in Latin works much the same way. Really once you get either Greek or Latin down it drastically reduces the time it takes to pick up the other. Of course it's much easier if you natively speak a language that has a heavy Latin influence (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, English)

yea, but what would I use it for? reading medical journals? :D

:D No silly you can use it to read all the great Latin authors of Roman Antiquity, and the Vulgate of course. Or you can write your journals in it so no one can sneak in and read them. But yes other than that it's about as useful as Koine Greek is since it is a dead language after all.
