from what I understand cessationists believe that the words of the prophets was complete in the first century when the scriptures were complete so that nothing more is to be added to or taken away from God's word...anyone who does so is cursed by God..so God no longer requires a mouthpiece to speak His word directly through to us as we have His complete written word

Ephesians 2
17And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,c but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God byd the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3
10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-3

1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

yes Jesus is the Word of God so we dont need anyone else telling us anything spiritual that is apart from the Word of God

Amen. Yet some will claim that we are to test todays "prophecies" to gauge whether they are in accordance with His Word ... or not. A "wait and see if it comes to fruition" approach. No thanks. God's written Word to us contains everything we need to draw near to our Saviour and God in Jesus Christ. Faith comes by hearing ... and hearing by the Word of God. The bible .... His divinely inspired Word given to us :)

If thats not bad enough one NAR printed in a book that we
cannot test them.

It would as if we were standing against God himself. Furthermore this
new prophecying will be additional to the bible(outa the box thingy)
Therefore it can contradict scripture.

So we have at least two types of false prophets....your garden
variety charismaniac and deadly wolfs.

This topic always confuses me because I thought everyone when they spoke were to speak as the oracles of God and the prophecy they should speak is the testimony of Christ.

I guess it comes from people not understanding how the Old testament foreshadowed the coming of Christ or how all of prophecy is about JESUS Christ. The Seed of Abraham is JESUS, it says SEED not seeds. Instead they try and be one of the seeds and totally miss the message of the Bible.

Prophecy is to speak as a testimony of JESUS, not some political lever to manipulate people into false idol worship of a "prophet" (not that anyone here has claimed this but many "prophets" demand it in the form of reading THEIR words more than Jesus' words written in the Bible)

The Word of God is Jesus Christ (not just the Bible though it contains many of His words) and He teaches people His laws and His ways and would NOT contradict the Bible.

anyway, here are the Bible verses that come to mind:

Isaiah 50
Why, when I came, was there no man?
Why, when I called, was there none to answer?
Is My hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver?

talks about JESUS

1 Peter 4:11
If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Many would argue but I believe we live in THESE times when God writes His laws in the hearts OF ALL His people. We are under the NEW Covenant mediated by Christ and are in need of ALL His people to speak HIS testimony. That is what it truly means to be an oracle of God. Spreading the Gospel to others.

Jeremiah 31:32-34

New King James Version (NKJV)

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,[a] says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

It is again repeated in Hebrews 8:9-11

mmm did a search on "strange things" in the Bible, the only one NOT referring to Jesus and what HE did is this one:

Proverbs 23:33
Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things.

So what is the term for the people who interrupt our regular service to give us "a word"? Or when someone says " I feel Like God wants me to say-blah blah blah" and the things they say are encouragement or exhortation?

I am not talking about the people who say, "God told me to tell you- and then proceed to give you explicit orders for your life". I am talking about the folks who are quoting scripture?

If someone is saying something that gives encouragement and exhorts another, can't it simply be just that ? Words of encouragement and exhortation ? Isn't this what we are striving to do here ... and in our real lives with others who are in need of as much ? What can any "modern day prophet" say to any of us that isn't already found in God's written Word ? Is it a "new revelation" we're to be given or just a rehashing of things previously said ? And of course it can't be a new revelation because if this is claimed, how would this then pass the litmus test of lining up with scripture ? How many thousands today claim to be prophets ? Do we even know who they are .... and shouldn't we know if what they are saying are truly words given to them by God Himself to be given to us ? Quoting scripture doesn't make one a prophet (I know you now this :)) Frankly speaking BarlyGurl, I tend to believe that some people need to learn what "God is a God of order" actually means. We don't have to be stars to be in His show.

I wish some of them that as they say want to be "used by God mightely"
would read the book of Ruth. Find any spectaculars in Ruth and Naomis life.
And there are many testimonies in the bible How God does His best
in everyday humdrum lives that arnt all that great.

Good words BroFes!

So how do you suggest these people be dealt with... I mean... They say "I prophesy" or some members want to "hear from so and so"?

Couldn't agree more Abiding. What comes to mind immediately is picturing Christ washing the feet of the twelve. Humbling Himself in this manner for the likes of us ??? Have to wonder if some even realize what it means to be used by God mightily ?

Matthew 20:26
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.

there are many earscratcher impliments you can buy on line as well
as different medicines.

But the best cure is to belong to a church where there is the preaching of the gospel
that soothes the soul.
