Hello there, welcome back :) i think you have been 'quiet' for a while? :) you posted what you said were controversial questions? a few weeks ago...and wanted to stir things up? I can't remember if you are a believer in Christ or not? if you are, you will know that superstition is not relevant when a person believes in christ. If you are not...then it might matter to you. As Christians, even coincidences are not 'coincidences' but God working...God Bless you, as you seek & confirm the Truth, in His Name, <><

Ha!! so the photo is taken in your truck...concentrating....looking ahead...aviators? :) Questions are great, gets us all thinking about our apologetics! But i suppose although we ought to have an answer for in who we believe...we need to be sensitive in how we ask the questions as believers in Christ? as many non- believers visit CC and we do know don't we?? (Big 10- 4) ok....that was SO lame...sorry :( I used to be bothered by superstition a little..but thats the beauty of the freedom in Christ! Please keep on asking...not sure I will have so quick a response! :) <><

The way I understand it, God is not a fan of superstitions. And as Christians, we should not have them. So, if you are a professional baseball player and a believer, you can wear clean socks and/or tighty whities at each game. Ha ha.

the reason i ask about this subject, is that i've heard and read that it is wrong to be superstitious.

Question: "What does the Bible say about superstitions?"

Answer:
Superstition is based on the ignorant faith of an object having magical powers. Another word for superstition is “idolatry.” The Bible does not support the idea of things occurring by chance, but nothing is done outside of God’s sovereign control. Either He causes or allows everything in keeping with His divine plan (Acts 4:28;Ephesians 1:10).

There are many types of superstitions in the world, ranging from the benign—such as not walking under a ladder—to the occult practices of astrology, black magic, divination, voodoo and sorcery. Scripture condemns those who practice astrology (Deuteronomy 4:19), magic, divination and sorcery (2 Kings 21:6,Isaiah 2:6). Idolatry is also forbidden, and no one who practices it will enter the Kingdom of God (Revelation 21:27). These types of practices are extremely dangerous because they open the minds of the practitioners to the influence of the devil.First Peter 5:8warns us to “be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

We should get our faith not from objects or rituals of man-made origin, but from the one true God who gives eternal life. “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:8-10).

this is just one of many things i've seen about superstition

well, im not getting alot of "hits" on this but my reasoning of this particular question of superstitions is the fact that saying "God bless you" after someone sneezes is actually a superstition. i know, i know, its just a matter of being nice or whatever, but actually, it came about because it was believed that when a person sneezed, well let me bring up this quote....

Origin. Ancient man believed that his breath was also his soul or "essence of life." When God made man, he "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." A rapid departure of that breath--a sneeze--is the same as expelling life from one's body. Also, it leaves a vacuum in the head which evil spirits can enter. Roman citizens feared sneezing when a plague hit their city during the reign of Pope Gregory the Great. Since they regarded the sneeze as a sure sign of approaching sickness, Pope Gregory in situated the use of the phrase "God bless you" to shield sneezers from any ill effects.

so therefore, being as that i do not believe in ANY superstitions, i dont say "God bless you" but rather "gesundheit" which is german for saying to "wish good health".

According to wikipedia, If your ear itches that means someone is talking about you.

Hey trukin did your ear itch just then...???

Side Note, normally topics have to sit for a while. I guess people like to dwell on what they will reply hours before they reply.

if you use it saying "Gott segne dich"
In German, Gesundheit ("health") is said after a sneeze. The sneezer responds Danke ("thank you"). Sometimes other wishes are uttered at following sneezes, e.g. Zufriedenheit ("contentment"), Reichtum ("wealthiness") or (humorously) Schönheit ("beauty"). The German word Gesundheit passed into local English usage in areas with substantial German-speaking populations.[SUP][1][/SUP] The expression is first widely attested in American English as of 1910, about the time when large numbers of Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to the United States

just a thought...lol

Superstition seems to give objects, or animals power to effect the lives and outcomes of what happens to a human, often in relation to a human doing something accidentally or out of their control. Silly and totally unbiblical.

My wife and I have very different cultural backgrounds. And that's not necessarily a big deal. But I rushed into the marriage before really getting to know her. I've found she is very much into superstition. And I believe it interferes with our ability to relate to each other.

On a somewhat related topic, she told me the other night she saw a dark silhouette moving through the house this past Saturday. And she asked me if I had seen it. I told her I hadn't. She had mentioned the same thing in the past. And I told her then that I don't believe in ghosts, wraiths, etc. I'm not saying they don't exist. I don't know. I just haven't seen any to give me reason to believe they exist.

I personally don't believe or participate in any superstition, frankly, I think their stupid. I have a beautiful big black cat, he is a true lover, that likes to snuggle, he actually waits at my feet until I'm ready for bed! I've broken tons of mirrors in my day, and I purposely walk between poles and under ladders! I'm half Irish, half Italian, so I mainly do it to frustrate my family! Just a little joke with us, especially since they are extremely superstitious! On a serious note though, alot of the superstitions that people believe in is steeped in witchcraft and pagan practices, which is why I also don't celebrate Easter with Easter eggs and such, the Easter egg is directly related to a pagan goddess of fertility, as is the Christmas tree, also, did you know saying "merry Christmas " is translated to "happy death to christ " so I am no longer saying that any more!

I believe there are angels and spirits moving all around us but we don't have anything to fear or worry about because God protects us.

Some people are able to see things others do not, but that does not make them better or worse than others. It is just another sense God gives people.

Its a spiritual gift like the ability to teach. Its called the discernment of spirits.

1 Corinthians 12:10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

for example:

2 Kings 6
[SUP]14 [/SUP]Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. [SUP]15 [/SUP]And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
[SUP]16 [/SUP]So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” [SUP]17 [/SUP]And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. [SUP]18 [/SUP]So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, “Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.” And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

I think too often people dismiss the spiritual things of this world and call it superstitious or foolishness.

I consider superstitions the false beliefs in material things that they have powers that they do not. However, I consider idols and such to be demonically influenced. A "lucky" rabbit's foot to be a small idol that if it truly works most likely has a familiar spirit attached to it.

Most idols and "lucky" items are just the imagination of the person and hold no true power, but some are just plain evil. Mainly because it takes a person's faith and places it upon an temporal easily destroyed object and away from the One True God.

I don't mind people saying "God bless you" because I always thought of it as a prayer to God for good health and a quick recovery. I don't think it is wrong to pray that God protect someone from becoming possessed. I heard from a Tibetian buddhist that sneezing was "a way to enlightenment" Something to do with "divine energy" or such things.

for the most part superstitions (the false belief that immaterial objects have "power" over the outcome of a person's life) are to be discouraged and enslave those who believe in those lies to servitude.

the Good News is that Jesus came to set people free from the lies...........

*sidenote: didn't see this thread, it must have faded to the back pages before I logged in again. don't get discouraged if you don't get responses right away, and questions are always welcomed :) I know I have a ton, I'd like to discuss with someone*

[h=3]Titus 1:13-15[/h]New King James Version (NKJV)

[SUP]13 [/SUP]This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, [SUP]14 [/SUP]not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. [SUP]15 [/SUP]To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.
