I have downloaded a few torrents in the past. The way I "justify" it is that I am not keeping a book from being sold. If I download a book I otherwise would have bought, that would be stealing. But if I download a book and use it for personal reading and I would not have otherwise bought the book, I "justify" that.

Furthermore, often people will download a book and then get the hardcopy anyway because they enjoy the book. At least one publisher (TOR, I believe) allows people to download books because it increases their sales.

Please pray that I will follow God's wisdom in this matter.

Yes I get open office. Good books are usually not free though as the people have spent a long time researching and writing.

am i stealing from an author or a publisher if i check out a book from a library instead of buying it?

That is probably one of the best answers. So true. Do you think this applies to torrents?
