You are not making sense. How can one be assured they are saved and then lose it? Hebrews warns that if it were possible to lose salvation then it would be impossible to have it restored.

If Pentecostals view the presence of the "gifts" as validation of salvation then they would be trusting in something other than Christ.

When scripture says we have the witness of His Spirit with our spirit as the means of knowing we are His this is not an external assurance but an internal assurance.

For the cause of Christ
Roger
With a few exceptions in the Bible there are no unquestionable personal assurances of salvation. All modern day claims of unquestionable personal assurances are simply invoking blanket promises of Christian assurances such as 1st John ;3 and Hebrews 10:22. They then assume they have met the standard for said assurance, making their assumption a simple self-assurance of their standing with God. Even to the point of claiming to know if their name is written in the Book of Life with non-removable ink.

With a few exceptions in the Bible there are no unquestionable personal assurances of salvation.
Here are the few exceptions (but by no means all):
'All that the Father gives to Me will come to Me, and him who comes to Me I will in no wise cast out. For I am come down from Heaven not to do my own will, but the will of Him Who sent
Me. And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the Last Day,' (John 6.37-39)

But you do not believe (My Father's works) because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow Me, and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and none shall pluck them from My hand. My Father who gave them to Me is greater than all, and no one IS ABLE to pluck them out of the Father's hand. I and my Father are one (John 10.27-30).

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, being accounted as righteous by His grace FREELY through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith by His blood (Rom 3.23-25).
'Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you come behind in no gift, waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you unto the end, that you might be unreproveable in the Day of our Lord Jesus Christ.' (1 Corinth 1.6-8). (and this the corinthian church!)
'By grace you are saved, through faith, and that (gracious act) not of yourselves, it is the gift of God and not of doings, lest any man should boast, for we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them' (Eph 2.8-10).
'Being confident of this very thing, that he which has begun a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ' (Phil 2.6).

'Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our doings, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, but now has been manifested by the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel (2 Tim 1.9).

I am not ashamed, for I know Him Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him against that Day (2 Tim 1.12).

But when the kindness of God our Saviour, and His love towards man appeared, not by works done in righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Christ Jesus our Saviour, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3.4-7).

Wherein God, being minded to show more abundantly unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His Counsel, interposed with an oath, that by two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie we may have a strong encouragement who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us, which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and entering into that within the veil, whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a High Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek (Heb 7.7-20).

Wherefore He is able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for them (Heb 7.25).

He has perfected for ever those who are being sanctified (Heb 10.14)

And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, they whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world (Rev 17.8).

Excuse me, But faith based Christianity is the only religion on earth that teaches eternal life. All other religions, including Islam,Judaism, and many christian theologies, teach salvation is earned or maintained by works. Meaning it is not ETERNAL. But it is CONDITIONAL.

Numerous religions teach that the soul lives forever. Bible-based Christianity uniquely teaches that eternal life exists only in Christ, and that it is shared only by those who are currently in Him! Faith-based “Christianity” is really nothing but presumption based upon false doctrines!

Pentecostals have assurance of salvation despite not believing in OSAS. The two are not mutually exclusive. You can have assurance of salvation.
Amen! Indeed, all true believers in Christ have full assurance of their salvation!

Oh, the men whom God chose to use to formalize the doctrine of the Trinity were blind unbelievers; and the men whom God chose to use to establish the New Testament Canon were more blind unbelievers!

Some people are so extremely desperate to believe the absurd and ridiculously unbiblical doctrine of OSAS that they will believe any nonsense that the devil himself can put before them.
God uses whom He uses.

God guards His Word.

He could have used those who worshipped Mary and statues of dead saints to keep His Word in the New Testament together.

For 1500 hundred years, it was clear as crystal to all believers that Jesus did NOT teach OSAS, and since then it has been as clear as crystal to the very large majority of believers in Christ and His word!
The Catholic Church, in all its wisdom, had thought it necessary to hide the Bible from its people for many years.

Believers only had the word of this corrupt church for quite awhile. It wouldn't do to tell them they only had to pay for their Salvation 1 time and that was it. Had to keep that money rolling in somehow.

Yes, OSAS is so clear that it was invisible until the 16th century when a renegade Roman Catholic politician named Jehan Cauvin (John Calvin) and his cronies came onto the scene and concocted the doctrine like an aborigine witchdoctor concocts his enchantments!
Augustine taught Eternal Security of the Believer. That was back in the early 400's.

So roughly 1200 yrs before Calvin.

And Paul taught it about 300 years before Augustine.

And the Lord Jesus Christ taught it before Paul.

Believers in OSAS are so desperate to name so much as a single man who believed in the doctrine of OSAS before the 16th Century that they drag in to mire the name of Saint Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo, who was born on November 12, 354, and who most certainly is not believe in OSAS!
Eternal security is pagan in its origin and is a thought that is in opposition to the Bible and genuine Christianity. Its lineage cannot be traced back but a few hundred years where it draws its inspiration from the "perseverance of the Saints" which in turn was drawn from Augustine's introduction of Gnostic and Buddhist thought into the Church. Eternal Security has a history, but not a very good one for the Christian who knows its origin.
May God save us from its falsehood.

JEFF PATON
How can you say that Augustine DIDN'T teach Eternal Security when it is obvious that he did?

You can claim that he derived this from his earlier study of gnosticism and buddhism but you can't say he didn't teach it.

That was early 400's by the way. Not 1600 years like you claim.

2nd of all, The Lord Jesus Christ Himself teaches us Eternal Security.

John 10:27-28
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Do you really think no one read that for 1600 years? It was concocted by pagans...???

The scribes and pharisees, who protect their religion above all else, have put together the bible but don't understand everything in it.

Seem familiar?

Everyone who is familiar with Augustinian theology knows for an incontrovertible fact that Augustine did NOT teach OSAS!

And Paul taught it about 300 years before Augustine.

Of course they read it, but they correctly understood it—as have the very large majority of Christians since the 16th century.

The scribes and pharisees, who protect their religion above all else, have put together the bible but don't understand everything in it.
No one put the Bible together—it is the word of God!

Proponents of the doctrine of eternal security like to quote John 10:27-29 out of context and totally miss the assertion that Jesus was making—the very assertion that got Him crucified!

27. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28. and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.” (NASB, 1995)

Here it is in context,

22. At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem;
23. it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.
24. The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25. Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father's name, these testify of Me.
26. “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.
27. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28. and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
30. “I and the Father are one.” (NASB, 1995)

In this passage, Jesus is asserting his deity. The importance of the words in verse 28 all but escapes the attention of many readers. Compare these two passages:

Isa. 43:13. “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?” (NASB, 1995)

Wisdom 3:1. But the souls of the just are in the hand of God,
and no torment shall touch them. (NAB, 1986)

Jesus is telling the Jews that His hand is the hand of God, and that, therefore, He is God! But notice that there is nothing at all in any of these three verses that says that anyone is grasped in the hand of God so that he cannot escape if he wants to. The point is that it is the hand of God, and being the hand of God there is safety. Those who are in the hand of God are in Christ, and in Christ is the eternal life—and no where else! Anyone who chooses either actively or passively to depart from the Christian faith departs from Christ and necessarily departs from the life that is in Christ. Just as we possess the safety of God only while we abide in Christ, we possess the life of Christ only while we abide in Him. Eternal life is Christ’s life and we posses it only in Him. The Greek adjective translated ‘eternal’ modifies the Greek noun translated ‘life,’ and thus describes not our possession of the life, but the life itself—the life of Christ that we share with Him when we are in Him.

The context of Isa. 43:13, quoted above, is important to the understanding of that verse and John 10:27-29.

1. But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!
2. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.
3. “For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place.
4. “Since you are precious in My sight, Since you are honored and I love you, I will give other men in your place and other peoples in exchange for your life.
5. “Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, And gather you from the west.
6. “I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from afar And My daughters from the ends of the earth,
7. Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”
8. Bring out the people who are blind, even though they have eyes, And the deaf, even though they have ears.
9. All the nations have gathered together So that the peoples may be assembled. Who among them can declare this And proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses that they may be justified, Or let them hear and say, “It is true.”
10. “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.
11. “I, even I, am the LORD, And there is no savior besides Me.
12. “It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And I am God.
13. “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?”
14. Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, “For your sake I have sent to Babylon, And will bring them all down as fugitives, Even the Chaldeans, into the ships in which they rejoice.
15. “I am the LORD, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King.” (NASB, 1995)
16. Thus says the LORD, Who makes a way through the sea And a path through the mighty waters,
17. Who brings forth the chariot and the horse, The army and the mighty man (They will lie down together and not rise again; They have been quenched and extinguished like a wick):
18. “Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past.
19. “Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.
20. “The beasts of the field will glorify Me, The jackals and the ostriches, Because I have given waters in the wilderness And rivers in the desert, To give drink to My chosen people.
21. “The people whom I formed for Myself Will declare My praise.
22. “Yet you have not called on Me, O Jacob; But you have become weary of Me, O Israel.
23. “You have not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings, Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, Nor wearied you with incense.
24. “You have bought Me not sweet cane with money, Nor have you filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices; Rather you have burdened Me with your sins, You have wearied Me with your iniquities.
25. “I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins.
26. “Put Me in remembrance, let us argue our case together; State your cause, that you may be proved right.
27. “Your first forefather sinned, And your spokesmen have transgressed against Me.
28. “So I will pollute the princes of the sanctuary, And I will consign Jacob to the ban and Israel to revilement.” (NASB, 1995)

In spite of all that God did for Israel, and in spite of all of God’s promises to be faithful to Israel, Israel chose to disobey God and became reviled in His sight. The very same thing has been true of countless Christians whom God saved, blessed, and made promises to be faithful to—promises that were conditional upon their faithfully abiding in Christ. Indeed, in John 10:28, Jesus made the same promise to His people that God made to His people in Isaiah 43:13, and yet later in the same chapter of Isaiah, we read that many of His people departed from His hand and became reviled in His sight. Christians who choose to remain in the hand of God remain secure in their salvation; Christians who do not choose to remain in the hand of God lose their salvation.

you will have to revise your opinion now
You need to revise your understanding of "personal".

The "personal" promises given to the thief on the cross and Peter being given the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. These are examples of "personal" exceptions.

Your examples are of the blanket assurances that all true believers have. If your assurance is based on these (which it should) then you are correctly assured but with the understanding that:

A. The Bible is correct
B. That you are properly adhering to the promise's precepts.

It is "B" that should concern us the most.

For the most part, all who claim to be Christian assume they are the correct ones. This is why claims of unquestionable assurance are really nothing more than self-assurances of correctly understanding the gospel.

In other words, if one of the many other views of the gospel are correct i.e. Mormons then your unquestionable assurance is bogus since it never was truly unquestionable.

This is not a spiritual issue but one of common sense. Our carnal desire for security tends to overrule what is simply written, in order to satisfy our desperate yearning to know what lays ahead.

Showing from the word of God that the doctrine of OSAS is contrary to the word of God is not arguing against God—it is teaching the truth!

Heb. 6:4. For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5. and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6. and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
7. For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;
8. but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.
9. But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way. (NASB, 1995)

Up until the 16[SUP]th[/SUP] century, this passage was universally interpreted as teaching that a Christian could lose his salvation, and the large majority of Bible scholars today still hold to that position. Indeed, this passage of Scripture gives us the most detailed description of what it means to be saved that we find anywhere in the Bible, and the end of these saved persons who subsequently fall away from the Christian faith is eternal damnation in the fires of hell. This was also the doctrine of our earliest Baptist forefathers before some Baptists heard a brand new doctrine that had been recently conceived by some men in Europe, and spread this new doctrine among their Baptist brothers causing it to take over like a firestorm.

The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews wrote his Epistle using the terminology and phraseology of the very early Church. Therefore, in order to accurately interpret the Epistle to the Hebrews, it is essential to have a solid background in the writings of the very early Church and the terminology and phraseology that they used.

The phrase in verse 4, “those who have once been enlightened,” is a reference to water baptism. Indeed, Justin Martyr (died in 165 A.D.) wrote that the term “enlightenment” was used as a synonym for water baptism of converts to Christianity and he uses the term “the enlightened one” for a person who has been baptized. And the Peshitta, an ancient Syriac translation of the Greek New Testament, renders (when translated into English) the phrase in verse 4, “who have gone down into baptism.”

The phrase in verse 4, “have tasted of the heavenly gift,” was variously interpreted during the first 1500 years, but it was ALWAYS interpreted as describing a born-again Christian. Some, for example, saw it to be a reference to the Eucharist; others saw it to be a reference to the teaching of Christ in John 6:31-58. Still others saw it to be a reference to the forgiveness of sins; others saw it to be a reference to the blessings conferred upon the Christian believer.

The phrase in verse 4, “and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,” is an obvious reference to receiving the Holy Spirit, something that, in the New Testament, happens EXCLUSIVELY to those who have been saved.

The phrase in verse 5, “and have tasted the good word of God,” is a clear reference to the Christian’s experience of hearing the word of God preached and taught and the consequential experience of it in his life as a believer.

The phrase in verse 5, “and the powers of the age to come,” is a reference to the miracles that were performed by the Apostles and other Christians as a foreshadowing of the kingdom to come, and to the other blessings that Christians experience now in part but shall experience in their fullness in the future kingdom.

The phrase in verse 6, “and then have fallen away,” can be properly interpreted only to be speaking of falling from grace and the Christian faith, something that can NOT happen until AFTER a person is saved.

The phrases in verse 6, “it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame,” tell us of the absolutely horrendous consequence of a Christian falling from grace, making the death of Christ on the cross for his sins to be of no effect. This passage expressly speaks of a person who has heard the Gospel, believed it, was saved and baptized, repented of his sins, and enjoyed the blessing of being a born-again Christian—but who subsequently chose to reject Christ and return to his sins. And the fate of such a person could not possibly be any worse—it is “impossible to renew them again to repentance.” Most obviously it is not impossible to renew an unsaved person to repentance if they have repented but not been born again and then fall back into sin. Therefore, the person spoken of has necessarily been born again but has fallen away from the Christian faith. And the born-again Christian who, of his own free will, chooses to reject the Christ who redeemed him is beyond redemption and damned to the fires of hell for eternity.

Verses 7 & 8 are an analogy used to support the author’s statements. Just as the ground which once brought forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled received a blessing from God, and the ground that now yields thorns and thistles is worthless and ends up being burned, so the Christian which once brought forth good fruit unto God but who now brings forth bad fruit ends up being burned in the fires of hell.

Verse 9 tells us that the author has been warning his Christian readers about things that do not accompany salvation, things that happen to Christians who fall away from the faith. Nonetheless, he is reassuring them that that he does not expect them to fall away, as some others had done, but is convinced of better things concerning them, and things that, in their case, accompany salvation, even though he felt that he needed to warn them of the horrendous consequences of apostasy from the Christian faith.

There is no peace of God in the hearts of those who do not know that they are eternally saved from condemnation. Saved by the grace of God and not of their own merits. Forever passed from judgment unto eternal life with Christ.

Numerous religions teach that the soul lives forever. Bible-based Christianity uniquely teaches that eternal life exists only in Christ, and that it is shared only by those who are currently in Him! Faith-based “Christianity” is really nothing but presumption based upon false doctrines!

Christianity teaches we are born DEAD. If we fail to come to christ, Our eternal destiny will be ETERNAL DEATH

Again, Only true Christianity teaches eternal life. All other religions, including Islam, teaches life (a relationship with God) is not assured. If we do not live a certain standard, we will not make heaven.

Whats this faith in Christ plus "the cross"?

Is the "cross" a peculiar aspect of faith that must also be accepted or can I just have faith in Christ alone?

It seems this trust only theology is more work then it first appears.
Christ and the cross and related.. Many people say they believe in Christ, and believe he hung on a cross. That has never saved anyone. YOU MUST HAVE FAITH IN THEM.

Your right about one thing, it is easier to trust in our works., trust in obedience, trust in a law. And to trust in religion, than it is to trust in things not seen.

Oh wait, faith is the substance of things hoped for. The EVIDENCE of THEINGS NOT SEEN.

sorry

I am making perfect sense, I am not pentecostal myself.

But they have assurance of salvation when they have their faith in Christ and are not living in willful sin.

So your sin is not willful. It is an oopsie. You di dnot mean it?

You think that will give you brownie points with God because you only sin by mistake?

What are you pushing here?

Universal Reconcilation or predestination?

I have been reading EG's post for over a year, not likely at all.:)

No, I am fairly sure you are pushing predestination. And not the nice version, the nasty one.

Exactly how many aspects of faith alone theology must one properly accept in order to receive the grace alone salvation?

Exactly how strong must someones faith be in this trust only theology?

If someone slips up and thinks for a moment they may need to repent, does this take away their "grace only by faith only" salvation?

Does thinking you need to repent of the need for repentance cause a problem?

And you think I trust in the law?

It appears as though you know this quite very well from your own personal experience!

Saved by the grace of God and not of their own merits.
Amen!

Forever passed from judgment unto eternal life with Christ.
Yes, indeed—except for those Christians who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace!

My posts incontrovertibly prove to those of sound mind that it is the teachers of OSAS who strive against the truth!
