Okay, so at my church the adults always fast a week before revival. I've never really understood why or how they did it. If someone could explain why, how, and what to do it would be greatly appreciated.

Fasting is not merely fasting on food, the fasting the lord truly enjoys is fasting your time. Such as giving up more time from things like t.v. or time with friends even and just spending time with god and getting to know him. This is what i do everyday, i constantly listen to christian music, i talk to him 24/7 and i read his word along the way while talking about him here on cc. True fasting my friend is to be still and know him

Fasting means to chasten the soul for the Lords sake. Its a decision you make to the Lord to have your sustenance be Spiritual and from Him first.

It can help tremendously in terms of your relationship with the Lord.

Fasting is good,when I first got converted I fasted a lot some were for genuine hunger for God n some were to show off or wrong reasion,guess a sign of immaturity.
Fasting is not like a hunger strike lol.its where u gaze upon the beauti of Christ,behind closed door where no men is watching,getting alone.

Fasting is a form of worship, willing to give something up for the Lord for a long or short period of time. It's usually is starving yourself for the Lord how i put it. Yes you dont have to starve yourself for the Lord, but the kind of fasting i know is usually done with no food period, maybe some water.

You may also fast on anything you do as well. Sometimes people do it to get answers that may need fasting and prayer, some people fast out of joy for the Lord, some fast for a blessing, some fast for anything and everything that will either help them in their devotion with God. Its a devotional thing between you and God.

The mind becomes more clear when toxic substances have a chance to leave the body. HEALING occurs. Spiritual & physical. Today our toxins are so great, a health food store cleanse would be better to help anyone fasting, truly cleanse themselves to also have a better spiritual awareness. (get rid of brain fog etc). Other religions also fast for spiritual reasons, but in today's world, we wouldn't recieve the same benefits as those in Jesus' day, unless we also cleanse our whole interior body while we fast. (liver & kidney cleanse etc).

That is false.... if it were true where the scripture says... be still and know... it would say fast.
Fasting literally means "to cover the mouth/not eat".... anything else is simply abstaining from an activity and can or cannot be spiritually beneficial.

there is fasting as the world fasts and fasting as God tells you to fast. unfortunately most people will tell you to fast as the world fast by obstaining from food or something like a new years resolution type thing.

i suggest you read the Bible and pray about it.

Isaiah 58
Is it a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush,
And to spread out sackcloth and ashes?
Would you call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to the Lord?

[SUP]6 [/SUP]“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
[SUP]7 [/SUP]Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
[SUP]8 [/SUP]Then your light shall break forth like the morning,
Your healing shall spring forth speedily,
And your righteousness shall go before you;
The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’Is it a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush,
And to spread out sackcloth and ashes?
Would you call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to the Lord?

[SUP]6 [/SUP]“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
[SUP]7 [/SUP]Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,

And your righteousness shall go before you;

[SUP]9 [/SUP]Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.
the question is "Is it a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a man to afflict his soul?" and the answer is NO, that is not the type of fasting God wants where people punish their body and drag their souls through torment pretending to be holy or cleansing themselves.

God says to do the following: free the oppressed, feed the hunger, help the poor, clothe the naked, don't wander around in the spirit world Do NOT "hide yourself from your own flesh"

God calls for TRUE religion, not fake piety.

True religion comforts and feeds the orphans and the widows.

James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

No it is the truth, do you god would rather have us starve ourselves or spen time to get to know him? This kind of fasting has made me and god have a wonderful love for each other, so i know this is the truth because i live it out everyday

I don't think that Scripture shows the type of fast referred to in this thread. This thread I think is referring to when people would go away for 40 days & not eat but pray on the mountain, or 21 or 23 days. Different people have different numbers of days for fasting with some relevance to Scripture, unknown to me. Those you mentioned were not fasting properly, that's all.
Esther 4:16="Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish I perish.".
Ariel 82 I have a differnt interpretaion of Isiah 58 which you quoted. These people were unkind to their fellow man, trying to obtain a ticket to heaven by fasting only, without love.They were hypocrites and admonished for it.
After the Lord's prayer in Matt.6, verse 16 explains:" Moreover when ye fast,be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward."
17-"But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face, 18- that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly".
It was also common to fast after a family death in OT. ( which comes naturally today by grievers mourning)
Matt.9:14-15. It was asked of Jesus why the disciples didn't fast 15 "And Jesus said to them,Can the children of the bridechamber mourn as long as bridegroom is with them? but the days will come when the bridegroon shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast". per Jesus.

Sorry Blain... my first response stands... you are confusing FASTING (which is to not eat), when purposefully NOT participating in some other activity... it is abstaining... NOT fasting. TRUE fasting is to not eat.... Jesus fasted... and he IS GOD. Spending time in the presence of God on purpose... is FELLOWSHIP or WORSHIP... it is not FASTING... unless you are purposefully NOT EATING for a period of time... and that does not include the customary period of time between meals. To "be still and know that I am God" is an instructive verse about trusting. I am glad you are "spending time with" God...however scripture must be interpreted correctly and you have been NOT been fasting... thinking you have been is an error.

Well its fine if you want to believe that, but to me fasting is giving up something important to you and spending time with god and worshipping and praying to him. I suppose i will just leave it at that because i don't want to drag this out, Gby

I personally DO want to believe sound doctrine... If YOU want to believe in your own personal interpretation of what the bible says... and the vocabulary used within... and the principals thus revealed in the scriptures... have at it... and when your error comes to fruition...it will be that much more clear.

so if you have the Holy SPirit with you, do you have the Bridegroom?

if you have the Bridegroom, why do you fast?

what does this parable of wineskin mean?

[h=3]Mark 2[/h][SUP]18 [/SUP]The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”
[SUP]19 [/SUP]And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. [SUP]20 [/SUP]But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. [SUP]21 [/SUP]No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. [SUP]22 [/SUP]And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”
