I was just curious when I read that Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish. Does anyone have an idea as to what fish it most likely was? What was common in that area?

Words of Old Testament prophets referred to a creature nature that can be found in people; "Like men who wander as if they have no God over them." This is the meaning of the christian fish on a personal level. In our sin, we believed we could be hidden in our sin; But this also was addressed in the Old Testament when it was written "I will teach men to fish them out" of the places they believe they can be hidden. Jesus fulfilled the words of the prophets by saying, "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men" This, of course, comes when a person hears the calling of the word of God, repents and follows in the teaching of Jesus. In other words, you also were drawn from that place you chose in sin. There is more understanding to be gained, but this answers your question on a personal level.

No it doesn't answer my question. I'm not talking about the OT - I am referring to the time when Jesus took a little fish and some bread from a little boy and it was multiplied to feed over 5,000. I was curious as to what fish might have been caught in the local seas there.

The question was not asked in a spiritual sense - I was just interested because I like fish.

While there were many different species of fish found in the Sea of Galilee there 3 types that were most commons adn they were the:
Musht or St. Peter's fish as it is called.
Biny
Sardine

It is thought that the fish Jesus divided were sardines. which are commonly referred to as "small fish"

From John Gill..

and two small fishes; there were but "two", and these "small"; it is amazing, that five thousand persons should everyone have something of them, and enough: these fishes seem to be what the Jews (c) call מוניני, and which the gloss interprets "small fishes": and by the word which is used of them, they seem to be salted, or pickled fishes, and such it is very probable these were; Nonnus calls them, ιχθυας οπταλεους, "fishes which were broiled", or perhaps dried in the sun; see Luk_24:42.

Okay, now that that is settled, what kind of barley loaves were they? :p

Thanks Crossnote - I would really like to taste those. Ummmm - salted or pickled fish. Maybe in heaven, I will ask Jesus to recreate the scene for me  to experience it.

I don't know. It's possible that the species of fish is extinct by now. I do wonder though, if they put the loaves and the fish together in the same baskets. Now that would be fishy!

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, oi, oi!
No, it wasn't a joke. Fish and bread really don't go together. Especially in baskets. But Jesus would have known what He was doing.
