Reports on Christianity Today posted on March 13, 2014 shows that surveys and searches suggest the translation that most Americans are reading is actually not the bookstore bestseller. The Most Popular and Fastest Growing Bible Translation Isn't What You Think It Is.

The King James Version of the Bible continues to be the version most Bible readers read most often. Nearly four out of ten Bible readers (38%) use the King James Version most often. Far fewer say they read the New King James Version (14%) or the New International Version (11%). All other translations were mentioned by 3% or fewer Bible readers.

Probably because of the kjv-only folks pounding it into their heads that it's a sin to read anything else.

Umm, but that's a probable guess. If you would like to see a thread such like these, It is not the KJ's who start to pound attacks. it's the opposite. We just responded to their distaste of God's words. History just repeated itself. The bible says

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

I am very skeptical of new translations as I know that there is coup to change what the bible says and the tried and true is KJV. However, I found the NKJV to be helpful and read what you want, but when it comes to the bear bones the KJV is text book. The only thing closer is the manuscripts, I lied, the best thing is the Holy Spirit opening your spiritual eyes to see the word properly.

There are other books that are not in the cannon, but be careful and be lead by the Spirit or don't do it at all.

i passed a church sign yesterday out in the county that advertised the church as one that taught from "king james only"
no mention of the gospel lol. just the times for sunday & wednesday meetings, "
traditional" and "king james only" taught here.
maybe they are on the right track inside; maybe not. you'd have to actually go attend for a while to find that out. but their sign seems to indicate they might have an issue with priorities behind the pulpit . . ?

That one is a good one. The Holy Spirit is the helper, teacher in everything pertaining to God's words and not the critical scholars. So that we must carefully approach His words with all due respects for God cannot violate what He says. SOLA SCRIPTURA!

do you believe that over the last 400 years, legitimate scholarship has gone on, which indicates some small changes in the text are completely justified & right?

and that there is an actual difficulty for people over the last 1 or 200 years, maybe even moreso today, in understanding 400 & 500 year old English, that makes it very hard for some people to comprehend what is being said in the scripture in the KJV? and also fairly easy to misunderstand the old use of the language? so that there is a legitimate usefulness in updating the language to match how it is commonly used today?

because if you read the preface of the 1611 KJV, that is what the translators themselves believed. they fully expected & encouraged scholarship to continue, and the work of translation to continue to be refined, and updated.

when i think about the "
conspiracy to change the Bible" -- & i do agree that's out there -- i don't think about things like the NIV or ESV or HCSB or NASB etc. i think about "The Message" and the NLT and the "Complete Jewish Bible" and whatever it is the JW's use, and obviously things like the "Book of Mormon" & the rest of their rubbish, etc.

The Bible does not mention the "originals" nor does it give them a superior distinction over the copies that Timothy had. The highest adjective to express scriptures is "holy" as in "holy scriptures". What Timothy had are copies of manuscript not the "originals"yet still the copies are called "holy". A friendly advice: need to review your belief on inspiration before taking up translation.
Not sure what you want to say... that copies are without error? Thats what we talk about.

that's not really the way i see it.

people ask "
which Bible translation is good?" because they legitimately don't know, and it's generally only the 'KJV-only' crowd who come in and condemn all other versions of the Bible except that one. look, where is the 'NASB only' crowd? no such thing.
people react to that, and the KJV guys are all like "
aha! persecution! see, it's written" -- but the reality is that they just came in and issued a blanket condemnation of everything except the KJV. they started out with by declaring war on everyone, and then said "oh my we've had war declared on us"

it's not unlike Joseph Smith, who appeared on the scene with his BOM, and declared that all other religions & all denominations of Christianity are utterly false, and that he is the only person on earth who has the truth. then naturally all other religions & denominations on earth respond with "
hold up there dude" and J. Smith replies saying "o my i'm persecuted without cause, this is what the Bible said would happen"
but he's the one who introduced himself by declaring total war and condemning everyone except himself!
even if what he said were true, his reaction isn't legitimate. hes the instigator & aggressor.

amen to that!

we've got the Spirit, a greater blessing than anyone on earth had before the cross, and many people lived without that, and without any written testimony, but still knew God.

what scroll did Enoch have to read? but he walked with God.

Flesh, flesh is always looking for proof, the Spirit knows. The bible is just testimonies and examples of life, given by the Word of God and who is the Word of God? If you are led by the Spirit, then you will know the Word of God. My sheep know my voice. Faith produces fact and it grows as the seed of a mustard tree. Faith produces faith. Faith in what? A book written by men at the Hand of God. Yes faith produces that faith. I said faith, talking about faith, you don't need a whole lot, just use what you got.

A little seed makes a tree planted by the river of waters.

Is your faith in the authenticity of the manuscripts? or is it in the cross of Christ? The Word will become real if it's in the cross of Christ. Those who have eyes to see let them see.

See? Even in the 21st century with computer copying you have made error in Scripture and merged 6 words into one.

You have proven that the copying of Scripture is not inspired and without any error.

Enoch probably had the first four chapters of Genesis and he would've known of the promise of the coming Kinsman Redeemer.

Hahaha! that's me of course, I erred but that not a sort of the copyist mistakes of the original tongues where scriptures were carefully copied. The copyist mistakes made were the Alexandrian copies which basically all families of mss. would just align into two, the Anthiocan or the Alexandrian.

This maybe the difference and I see your point but historically it's not.

They were written by Moses? Enoch would have been by word of mouth and the fact is he didn't need it as he walked with God and was taken.

This is exactly the sort of mistakes copiysts have made.

There are missing words, words written twice, rows written twice or left completely etc.

You are teaching what is not true, do you know that? Manuscripts are not perfect, not even one of them, every one of them has some mistakes.

God bless,
okay -- yes, for sure the KJV has some hundreds of years of history. but the Greek & Hebrew has thousands. that's the preserved word of God, even with copying mistakes & scribal additions, which can be traced and corrected. and it goes out into every language, sometimes without even the written word, like RobbyEarl is saying.

the "
good fight of faith" is for the gospel, and the gospel isn't "KJV" -- the gospel is Christ Jesus, crucified and risen, come from heaven and returned and returning again.
like that church sign i saw, sometimes i think that gets lost in the shuffle, and whatever anyone thinks of the ESV, NASB, NIV, etc. -- the gospel is still right there in these translations. doctrine isn't changed by revisions to translation, but by false spirits.
