Interesting question - does life begin at conception? It's had me thinking, that's for sure.
I'm completely infertile, so I have to approach my answer to the question based on the fact that it is completely impossible for me to reproduce, and hence, I have no emotions tied up in it. Biologically, once the sperm and ovum fuse, a lot of complex interactions begin to take place as DNA is combined and coded and the initial cell begins to copy and divide. Is that life? I don't know.
Buddhists believe that "life" begins 49 days after conception and they say this is when the soul is imbued into the fetus. Oddly enough, this is also the same period of time that the fetus's brain has developed to the point where the thalamus and pineal glands are present, and many cultures revere the pineal gland as the "seat of the soul". So, is life at conception, or is life when the soul is present?
I'm going to have to think on this more.
