“Exhort your household to learn them word for word, that they should obey God…For if you teach and urge your families things will go forward.”--Martin Luther

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children...
Deuteronomy 6

***
Above all else love God alone;
Bow down to neither wood nor stone.
God’s name refuse to take in vain;
The Sabbath rest with care maintain.
Respect your parents all your days;
Hold sacred human life always.
Be loyal to your chosen mate;
Steal nothing neither small nor great.
Report, with truth, your neighbor’s deed;
And rid your mind of selfish greed.

Thank you for sharing that. I truly wish that I had children to teach this to but, I guess God did not intend for me to have children. I will take a copy of this to church with me, I am sure there are plenty of parents with young children who would appreciate this.

A blessing to see someone pass this on to others. We wonder why our culture is in such sad shape when even Christians do not know basics. What do we expect of the world when the salt is without savor?

I think it was Hosea who said, "...my people perish for lack of knowledge."

I love it and am happy to pass it along to the parents at my church.

I am a new Christian and am working hard to learn the Word and how to live a life that pleases God. If you have any other information that would be helpful to a newbie, I would love to hear about it.

Thank you and God Bless.

Good advise but I feel the heading is not going well with me. The stuff and information is fine and encouraging. Someone may not understand by "Ten Commandments'. I rather teach my children the Love of Christ, the great Commandment which takes all the commandments. Honestly, I have never taught my children the ten commandments. By this "Love thy God with all your heart.... the second like unto it...Love your neighbor as you love thyself...makes it easy for my children to remember than memorizing one by one.

Yes, we certainly should be teaching children the Great Commandment, etc. But if they do not know the Ten Commandments, then they do not know what Jesus is talking about when He mentions them.
Read the Luther quote above. Calvin and Wesley said much the same, see quotes on link.

Amen LClark, it's good to hear the Ten Commandments spoken of without someone trying to water them down. Sounds like you are not anti-nomian as are so many evangelicals today.

Yes, LClark it was Hosea who said "...my people perish for lack of knowledge...because thou hast...forgotten the law of thy God" (Hosea 4:6). We of historic Christianity do not know it is we who are "my people." Told, we are not "Israelites: to whom pertaineth the...law" (Rom. 9:4) we have forgotten the same and are in gross sin ("for sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4).

I just introduced my daughter to the 10 Commandments this morning. I like the way you present them and will probably teach that to my daughter as well.

On a lighter note. The first ten weren't too bad. It's that last one that really challenges me. "Love one another" Workin on it!

As we teach them the 10 Commandments or the Greatest Commandment, we should not forget to teach them about the love of God, righteousness principles and the consequences of sin.

Absolutely! My six month old quotes them every day.....I think. I don't really know. It's hard to tell with her chewing on her fingers and blowing bubbles. :p

I couldn't have managed to mother my three without the commandments. I always taught my kids to think for themselves, and the older they got the more there was a question about if I had say in how they were to operate their lives. You know, that Mom I'm going to a movie this Saturday afternoon, and no you can't sit in a dark movie on a nice sunny day.

We established that for older kids, God was the authority. The movies weren't Godly, the kids usually sat necking, and God wanted them to make the best of what He had given them. So it was a mutual decision, Saturday afternoon movies were out.
