Hello, My name is David. I have been an atheist for about 2 years now, ever since my wife Mary was kidnapped. I still have hope she is alive, and some how reading this post. Besides that, I am trying to seek help to become a Christian, and get away from this Atheism. Ever since I was a kid, I always got in trouble for writing "666" on all of my binders, and notebooks in school, when I was only 7 years old. No one knew what to do with me. They called me a demon..... All I want right now is to seek help to become a christian. I recently got out of prison last year for burning one church in Florida. This happened when I was in my "Atheism" State.. All I remember was I saw the devil when I went to go to bed, and then I woke up in the back of a police car, with blood allover me. What can I do? What should I do? Is there a better path I can find to become a Christian? I do not want to continue on this Atheist path. Can someone help me/guide me?
I'm sorry things went this way for you, but God is waiting with open arms to accept you. Even having burned a church, and whatever you past is, God has spent your whole life waiting for you to come to Him. His desire is to forgive you of your wrong doings, wipe away your past, give you new life and to start a new spiritual journey. There is no 'trying to become a Christian'. A Christian is something you are, or are not.
If you want to become a Christian, be forgiven, born again, then acknowledge to God you are a sinner in need of His grace (special favor we don't earn, but is given freely by God), His forgiveness. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and that you acknowledge him as lord.
Your next step, get a bible, if you don't have one. I suggest the New Living Translation (NLT). Its written in easy to understand language, yet still reliable. Start in the book of John for daily reading. But you can also peruse the whole bible afterwards.
Keep in mind, God is not a genie. When we pray, we don't pray 'God i want you to do this, do that, etc..' Well, there may be areas like that, but the idea is we don't just pray for things. We pray for our needs, our family, friends, community, world, if you want. And yes, we can pray for ourselves, but try not to overly focus on you.
Following God does not mean everything gets all better now. Life starts working out, no more troubles. Following God means when these troubles arise, we can trust in Him to help us through, to strengthen us, give us wisdom, if we seek and listen.
Last i'll say, being a Christian is about growing, learning and moving forward. In other words, God doesn't always just come in when we accept Him and just 'bam' change everything. He can, and has at times, but more commonly it is the beginning of growing. Don't expect to be super Christian in a day, a month, or even a year. Some people struggle many years with habits and sins. We're all at different places in our walks with God, some are farther along, some are behind. Some grow quickly, others more slowly. Long as you maintain a relationship with God and a desire to please Him, and live the best you can according to His will, then you're in the right place, whether you're struggling, or having an easy time.
I hope all this helps and i hope to hear we have added you to the family of God soon.
