once I had a really high fever when I was a kid. My parents took ice water and sponged me off. I screamed as the icy water burned me. I'm not even sure it helped.

I was babysitting once and the child had a relatively high fever and couldn't sleep. So I filled up the bathtub with relatively warm water.. maybe even a little warmer than I would have liked because I was keeping in account the high temp of the kid would cause the water to feel cold. I had the child feel the water and tell me if it was warm enough.. The child said yes. I had the child sit in the bath and slouch down till the water was just under the chin and definitely over the chest. Then I began to read a book. About 20 or so minutes later, I felt the water it was cool. But the child didn't notice because the body temp and the water lowered together. I felt the childs forehead and the fever was gone. The child felt better and went straight to sleep. I highly recommend this for anyone.
God bless.

the childs body temperature didn't stand a chance against the water, because it covered every square inch of the body *minus the head) when it drops the body temp drops.. amazing :)

Is there a metaphor in here? I feel there is. However this is a good way of cooling a fever. Icy water is bad. Cool drinks and lukewarm water sponging is best.

no metaphor, real deal. I stand by the warm bath, reading a book til the water cools is the best :)

have you ever gotten in warm water but then been exposed to air? it makes us cold, especially under a fever. I wouldn't recommend sponging at all.

I agree that it works and I would use it for myself but my nursing books say sponging is the best way.

I have used the warm bath method, but added a little cool water every few minutes. And you are right reading or playing is a good way to help take
their mind off of not feeling well. Thank you for the reminder, I have grandkids now....might be using the info soon for me or to pass it on to their moms.
God Bless
